âWhere the heck is Nick?â
I knew that would be her first question. Ainsley and Nick have a stronger bond, but that bond is impacting what she really needs. So, despite her wants, Iâm going to give her what she needs, even if it breaks my heart in two having to.
âI asked him to sit out this time,â I say simply.
âWhy?â she quickfires.
Nick and I always tackle every problem together. Weâre stronger as a unit. Where Nick has an innate way of getting people to open up to him, itâs harder for me. Heâs the pilot while Iâm just the co-pilot. Iâm only ever soft with people, never push, never probe for more than theyâre willing to immediately offer, but Ainsley deserves more from me. She needs more from me. And Nick isnât getting anywhere with his usual methods so that leaves me to try this approach. Iâm hopeful sheâll finally open up about whatâs bothering her if he isnât here to let her redirect our attention away from whatever that is.
âNick has something of a blind spot when it comes to you,â I answer honestly.
She cocks a brow.
âHe lets you redirect your focus when things become uncomfortable,â I ping.
âAnd you plan to push my butt in whatever direction you think that stubborn squib needs to go?â she returns fire.
âNot push you,â I clarify. âGuide you if youâll let me.â
âNo offence, Elaina, but youâre about the least likely to push any punk into doing any-freaking-thing,â she slamfires.
âThatâs why Iâm not pushing you, more giving you the chance to really open up and say what youâre thinking without the temptation to deflect.â
She shoots out a breath. I know sheâs getting annoyed, but I also know sheâs less turbulent with me, and itâs unlikely sheâll throw a standard tantrum if I nudge a little more than is usual for me.
âI spark blocked those thirsty as heck wielders,â she reports.
âAinsley, thatâs wonderful news!â I chime. âWeâve been worried you werenât progressing.â
âWell, I was a little constipated,â she admits, âbut Iâve sorted that crap out now.â
âHow did it make you feel to exhibit that sort of self-control?â I encourage her.
âIâd probably have celebrated it more if Esha hadnât been strangling me to death at the time,â she backstops, waving her fingers over her purple throat.
I gasp. âWas this just Esha being Esha, or was there more to it?â There are some issues where Eshaâs concerned. Ainsley and Luke are sleep sharing, and that hasnât sat well with Esha regardless of her having so openly ended things with Luke.
She volleys a feral groan.
âSo, itâs obviously a more situation,â I deduce. âLetâs talk about that.â
âLuke keeps rejecting me.â She leans back and folds her arms across her chest.
I clapper my head, her words not making sense. Anyone can see Lukeâs interested in Ainsley, but she hasnât seemed to show the same interest back in any way thatâs clear to me. In fact, it seems the opposite. âRejecting you how?â
âHe told me the only way heâll sleep with me is if I get this stupid shackle off,â she complains, shaking her wrist in front of her.
âBut heâs already sleeping with you.â
âBanging.â
âBut you already spar at the Stadium.â
âSex,â she dryfires.
I inhale sharply. âThat does pose something of a risk.â If she wants some real-time examples of all the dangers being intimate poses when feral sparks are involved, Gradyâs nothing if not a persistent cautionary tale.
âIâm sick and tired of everyone trying to control me!â she roars, âand my powder keg.â
âCould the way youâre feeling have more to do with the control youâre struggling with in general than Lukeâs rejection?â
âNo, Iâm pretty sure the shootout I had this morning was specific to his banging refusal,â she accurizes, âon account of this stupid shackle.â
âYouâre the most tactile person I know,â I tink. âYouâre constantly seeking physical connection. While youâre awake. While youâre asleep. Whether itâs fists for fighting or bumping, hands for holding, fingers for poking, or the kisses you place on every cheek in proximity.
âWhat youâre trying to experience with Luke is just another extension of those feelings. Youâre centering it on banging, but itâs about more than that. Itâs about intimacy. Thatâs something you need when youâre awake too. Youâre wired for the deep end, so you always revert back to the most basic emotions you can understand. If youâre not punching Luke, and youâre not asleep with Luke, youâre resorting to what you feel is the most reasonable facsimile of those things in a basic state. Lust.â
âI always thought you were soft like Asher, but that epic speech was all Atlas.â
âYou need to talk to him,â I plink.
âIâm saying salty balls all to him,â she refuses. âHeâll just say something else to piss me off. Or Iâll say something to piss him off, whichâll be worse, because when he finally does get pissed at me, and I definitely deserve that, heâll just be done with me like he got done with Esha when she finally drove him overboard.â
âLuke does have a fuse, Ainsley, but itâs much longer than yours.â
âI donât pack heat for long,â she concedes. âThatâs one of the benefits of having such a short fuse. Quick to ignite. Quick to burn out. But I have an abundant supply, so talking isnât an option.â
âThen maybe you need to try something else,â I suggest. âYouâve wrapped everything around Luke lately. What about other people?â
âIâve looked.â She clicks her tongue. âIâm having a hard time finding a viable replacement.â
âThen maybe you need to start looking in places you wouldnât normally look,â I persist. âThe Registry, perhaps?â
She recoils her nose. âYou want me to bang Fiona?â
I chinkle my chimes. âNo, that might make Frank a little sad, and no one wants a sad Frank. I meant surrounding your spark well with more than just candidates for sexual gratification. You need companionship. You have Grady, but you should have more support than that, and fresh scenery might be exactly what you need to settle down your raging hormones so you can actually think straight about your situation.â
âIs this why Nick isnât here?â She narrows her scopes. âBecause heâd make a hit list instead of telling me to grow my dang friend pool?â
âOf course not,â I backwind. âIâll get him working on a list if thatâs what you really want.â
She volleys another feral groan. âI donât really know what I want.â
âWell, youâre never going to figure it out if you keep letting your water slosh you around,â I tinkle.
âItâs constant,â she snicks. âMaybe thatâs the spark Iâm meant to choose.â
âYou think youâll be able to choose between them?â I really didnât expect her to openly talk about a preference, especially this early in our one-on-one approach. Thereâs such glorious balance between her sparks, picking between them will be a very difficult decision for her.
âItâs either that or wind up as one of your dang vault volatiles,â she clips, âif the Dark Royal Guard doesnât hold me down and kill them all first.â
âNo one can make you choose,â I assure her. âItâs against the law for them to force you to choose, and those shattered sparks are making honest to goodness progress lately. Nathaniel goes days without episodes now. Dustin might even be released soon, since heâs doing so well, and heâll be the first wielder to hold both dark and light simultaneously. Things are changing for the better, Ainsley. If you donât want to give up any of your sparks, donât. But if you do, just please give the others a chance. Even if your water spark is your final pick, there are still many, many more fish in that particular sea.â
âNow I see why Nickâs not here,â she quickfires.
âWhy?â
âHeâd never have told me not to pick,â she realizes.
âNo,â I agree. âYouâre special to him, and he worries terribly about you.â
âYouâre not worried?â The prospect seems to hurt her which wasnât my intention.
âOh, Iâm worried,â I confirm. âJust not for you. Iâm worried for the person daft enough to try and make you choose against your will.â
She brrrts a laugh.
âYou have time,â I remind her. âTake some space for you to get your head on straight. Regardless of what happens, you have us. Always.â
âA little space,â she echoes. âI can work with that.â
