Chapter 104 of 125

To Use a Teacup

[ p o e t r y 2]178 words~1 min read

One day,

Days, months, years from now

I will drop your teacup by mistake

And it will shatter

And I will cry.

And I will think to myself,

"What use was there

In using the cup for my morning coffee

If I knew that I stood the risk

Of breaking it one day."

And then I will remind myself

Of what I thought

When we first started calling,

"Of what value is there

In learning to love my grandfather

When I know that he is dying

And I know that I will loose?"

And yet,

There was value

And there is value.

Because things of value

Should be known and should be used.

True,

It wouldn't have hurt so badly

When you passed

If I had not loved you,

And true,

My teacup may never break

If I don't use it.

But what a pathetic way to live!

Pain is not worth avoiding

If it means avoiding

Things of value.

There is risk and loss

In loving,

But there is value and worth

In the loving between.
