Grieving as the Oldest

"do i just wear normal clothes

for grandpas burial"?

That's the text

My 16 year old brother

Sent my last night

I think that's the beautiful thing

About being an older sister

Is you have someone to take care of

Someone to protect.

I don't know the answer.

I've been sitting here for days

Refusing to pack

Because I don't want to

Figure out

What outfit

Is appropriate to burry

His ashes in.

If it were just me,

I might never pack.

Yet,

My little brother needs to know

What to pack

And what to wear

For grandpas funeral,

So it's my job

To pick up my broken pieces,

To gather my grief,

And to pray for the strength

To at least ask what to pack

And to give him an answer

"Jeans and a t-shirt

Don't dress bright tho probably"

"But not shorts"?

"Yea probably"

And just like that,

We know what to pack.
