âI really hope you donât remember much of that last part when you wake,â I said, tracing the tendons of her hand.
âOut of everything youâve told her, Britta in your bedchamber will be the one thing sheâll definitely remember,â Kieran said with a laugh. âSheâll probably want to do some damage to that cock you keep speaking of.â
Chuckling, I looked over to where Kieran sat on Poppyâs other side. âNah, I think sheâs far too interested in having my cock pierced for that.â
Kieran arched a brow. âI would pay an insurmountable amount of coin to witness you allowing someone to pierce your dick.â
âIt has to be fucking painful.â I grinned. âBut worth it.â
âDonât know about that last part, and I feel like I need to spend some time talking you out of this.â
Another laugh left me as I dipped my head, kissing Poppyâs shoulder. âI only thought of the bit with Britta because it really threw me that I wasnât down for it.â
âYou were down for it,â Kieran remarked. âJust not with her.â
âYeah.â I shifted, rising slightly on my elbow. The thick fringe of Poppyâs lashes didnât flutter as I scanned her features. âDo you think the shadows under her eyes have lessened?â
âA little.â He leaned over and brushed a stray wave off her cheek. âI really think so.â
âThatâs good.â I swallowed.
âItâs mind-blowing what she did for you that night. What she was capable of before all of this,â Kieran said, his brows furrowing. âShe gave you real peace with just a touch of her hand without even knowing what plagued you.â
âI know.â My damn chest ached with the intensity of emotion swelling there. âShe did it out of kindnessâsomething she didnât have to show me, especially when I was striving to be an utter irritation to her.â
âYeah, but I think she liked that kind of irritation even then.â
A smile surfaced as I nodded. âShe couldnât resist my charm.â
Kieran snorted.
Exhaling heavily, I looked over at him. He was watching Poppy, his features soft in a way I hadnât seen in a long time.
âHave any updates for me?â I asked. Heâd returned in the middle of my storytelling and hadnât interrupted.
âThings are calm in the city for now. Several Descenters have come out and helped with that.â He scratched a hand over the shadowy growth on his jaw. âDozens of Ascended have been locatedâmaybe even hundreds. I donât have the exact number. Still waiting on that.â
âAnd?â
âAnd they are all basically under house arrest, as was ordered.â
âHow did that go?â
âFrom what I understand, many did as requested.â His stare was grim. âSome did not, and they met an unfortunate end.â
That wasnât something I would stress over. âWe are giving them a chance. Thatâs more than many of them would have given us.â
Kieran nodded. âA Descenter, I think her name is Helenea? Not sure. But anyway, she went to Emil and warned him about the tunnels and how the Ascended use them to travel during the day,â he told me. We expected that, but it was still good to know that we had supporters here in the city willing to help. âHisa is leading a group into them now.â
I felt myself nodding as my hand clenched at my side.
âI know itâs hard,â Kieran said. âNot being out there while our people are taking risks. Itâs hard for me, but you need to be here.â
âWe need to be here.â I forced my hand to relax. âAny news on Malik?â
âNot yet.â
Gods, where the fuck was he? Wherever Millicent was, which was anyoneâs guess. I didnât doubt that Naill would eventually track his ass down, but I hoped it was sooner rather than later. That would be one less thing to worry about. At least for now.
âYour father and the others were likely delayed at Padonia, but they will be here,â Kieran said. âYou should rest, Cas.â
âHave you rested?â
âWeâre not talking about me.â
I smirked. âI did rest. While you were gone.â I picked up Poppyâs hand. Her skin was still cold. âI fell asleep for an hour or so. I didnât walk in her dreams.â
âThatâs not why Iâm saying you should sleep.â
âI know.â I brought her hand up and pressed a kiss to her palm. âIâm fine.â I found his gaze. âYou?â
He nodded. The thing was, though, if either of us managed to sleep more than an hour or two, it wouldnât be restful. Not until Poppy woke up. Not until we knew.
âWhen was the Rite?â Kieran asked. âFrom that point in your story?â
âHell. Aboutâ¦two days, I think.â I tipped my head back, delving into my memories of that time. âMiss Willa.â
Kieranâs brows rose.
I looked down at Poppy. âHer diary.â My lips split into a smile. âBut there was also the meeting with you.â I briefly glanced at Kieran. âAnd the night before that.â
