Chapter 20: Calm Before the Storm

My Beginning After the EndWords: 10389

(Six Months Later)

Today was Ellie and I's eighth birthday, and our parents told us we were just going to have a family party. However, I know that they are planning something bigger, but I won't ruin the surprise for Ellie.

My core was now at the light yellow stage, which means I am extremely close to silver. Over the last year, Arthur has been training with me, and helping improve my sword skills.

I have decided to go to Xyrus Academy, well I shouldn't say that. I felt more like I was forced into going, by Tessia, Arthur, Uncle Vincent, and my mother. It wasn't the worst thing in the world, but I wanted to become an adventurer.

I believe at this moment the guests for our party were arriving, because my father had Ellie and I stay in our rooms while he set up something he wanted to show us. Ellie didn't realize, but it possibly was the worst lie he could have come up with.

"What do you think it is?" Ellie asked from her bed. I was standing against the wall waiting. She was in a white dress, and I was forced to wear this white button down with a black tie. I also had on these killer nice dress pants that I actually enjoyed wearing.

"Who knows?" I shrugged; I knew what was happening, so I didn't really feel anxious about what my father was doing.

The door to Ellie's room opened and our father spoke. "Come to the main hall." The door closed and he left.

"Let's go." Ellie said getting up off her bed, I followed behind her as we made our way to the main hall. "Dad?"

Our father and mother were standing before the main hall's entrance way. "Come you two." We walked up to them, and my mother placed her hands over my eyes. I think dad did the same too, Ellie. "Walk forward."

Ellie and I walked on ahead and they turned us to most likely face the crowd of people here, and then my parents removed their hands. "Surprise!" People shouted from below and I felt a smile form on my face as Ellie and I departed down to them.

"Ellie, you look amazing." A girl that looked our age said to her. "Your brother is so handsome."

Ellie and I were standing next to each other as the party continued, and there were three girls in front of me, all our age.

Our father began to speak again, he had a couple drinks I believe. "I would like to make an announcement before we keep this thing going." He paused and waited for everyone to quiet down. That's when I felt it, I laughed as I started to slip through the crowd. "Today, my two children, Ellie and Virion, turned eight, and I thank you all for coming and celebrating with us." I got to the door to the mansion and slipped out. The last thing I heard was. "Big brother and sister dance." At least I didn't have to dance.

"Tess." I called out to the Princess with her maid. Tessia turned and smiled at me.

"Veer." She said something to her maid and walked over to me. "Happy birthday." She said as she hugged me. The maid got into the carriage as Tessia started to speak with me. "How did you know I was here?"

I smiled. "Really" I paused. "I can track people's blood even without being in my phase one, when I have been around them for a while."

"I see." I could hear clapping inside. "You should go back in; I'll see you at the academy."

"I guess you will." Since people were forcing me to go. "Why are you so afraid to see Arthur?"

"I'm not, I want him to spend today with Ellie and you." Tessia was trying to be nice, but it wasn't necessary. "I'll see him at the academy, so it's fine."

"You don't need to do that, Tess." I walked up the stairs. "But I understand, bye princess."

"Bye, Veer."

I made my way back into the party and made my way through everyone again. They all said happy birthday to me as I walked by. I gave them a smile and a nod. I then found Ellie with a bunch of girls our age. There were zero boys my age, most likely because I don't know anyone. I was also at Elenoir for the last two years.

"Hey, Ellie." The girls turned to me approaching. "Mind introducing me to some of your friends?" I smiled as I stopped next to Ellie. The five girls there were all smiling at me, and then looking to Ellie for her to introduce them.

"Everyone this is my twin brother Veer." They already knew that though. "Veer this is Caroline, Jasmine, Lyra, Robin, and Charlotte." She pointed at each girl one by one.

"It's nice to meet all of you." I lowered my head slightly to the group of girls.

"I-it's nice to meet you as well, Veer." Charlotte spoke from my right, her face was red.

"Ellie has already told us about her twin brother who was a strong mage already." Lyra commented with a huge twinkle in her brown eyes.

"Oh, has she." I turned toward Ellie with a grin.

She punched me. "Don't think too much about it." Everyone laughed.

"What are you seven doing?" My father came in from behind us, he placed a hand around my shoulder. "A-are you trying to flirt, Veer?" He was basically using my body to stay upright, this man needed to stop.

The girls started to get flustered. "No, I wasn't, father, and maybe you should take a little break, drink some water."

"Haha." He laughed. "How about you ask one of the girls to dance?" He pushed me up. "Go on, put out your arm."

Using my hand, which was reinforced with mana now, I removed his hand from my shoulder. "Father, please go over to mom." I gave our mother a look of help me, and she came over to us.

"What's going on here?" She smiled as she looked at everyone.

"Dad is being annoying." I told her.

"I was just trying to get Veer to dance with a girl." My father exclaimed, as he was now holding on to my mother. "Don't you think that's a good idea?"

"It's not a bad idea." My mother added to my annoyance. "Veer, these girls are all lovely. I think you should dance with one since your sister danced with Arthur."

"Mom, I thought you would have my back." I pleaded as my parents walked away while giving me scary looking smiles.

I started to shake my head. "I'm sorry about our parents."

"Yeah, they can be weird at times." Ellie chimed in. "Don't listen to them."

This could be my only chance to dance with a girl, I took a deep breath. "Lyra, would you care to join me on the dance floor?" I could sense the look of surprise on everyone's faces in the group. Lyra had this silky black hair that went well with her brown eyes.

I held out my hand for her, and she took it. "I would love to."

Lyra and I made it to the dance floor, and I held my arms around her waist, as she had hers on my shoulders, as we started to sway.

"So, Lyra, how do you know my sister?" I asked, trying to make conversation. I wasn't feeling awkward or anything, but it didn't feel right to not speak.

"Uhh, we met last month actually." Last month, where was I when she met her? I was probably training. "At the Helstea Auction house one night." Oh, that makes sense, I never go to those things anymore.

"That's cool, do you go there a lot?" I looked up and could see my father grinning at me from a table with my mother. I smiled as I looked back down at Lyra.

"I didn't use to, but over the last month I have been." Lyra spoke, and as the band that was playing music continued, I realized that this music sucked compared to my old life.

"Maybe I'll come one day, if I don't have class." I saw Arthur and Lilia talking, I hadn't seen her in a while.

"Class?" Lyra said, confused.

"Oh, I'm attending Xyrus Academy this year." Her eyes went wide.

"Are you serious?"

I laughed. "Yep." As the music stopped, I stopped swaying. "I actually just saw someone I haven't seen in a few years. Do you mind?"

"Go ahead." She smiled at me.

"Thanks, for the dance." I said as I let go of her hips and made my way over to Lilia who was now walking away from Arthur. "Lilia."

She turned to me. "Veer, oh my, you have grown!" Lilia said as she walked up and hugged me. "Happy birthday."

"Thanks." I looked at Arthur who was talking to an old man. "Congratulations on becoming a mage."

"Thanks, Veer." She looked over her shoulder at Arthur. "I couldn't have done it without Arthur."

"I'm sure you could of." She faced me again. "Are you having fun at the academy?"

"Yeah, I can't wait to see Arthur and you there. I'm surprised you are going."

"Me too." I said, as I ran a hand through my hair. "It's going to be a little weird, but I'll figure it out." Elijah walked by, and I couldn't help but think about the attack on Xyrus. I'll most likely be there for that.

"You'll be fine." Lilia insisted. "Arthur, Elijah, and I will be there."

"I know."

It was a lovely night, I met a couple of new people, like Lyra. Arthur introduced me to Gideon, but he didn't seem to care. When the party finally ended, Ellie and I ended up in the living room with everyone around our presents.

I got a lot of new clothes, but there was one box in particular that I wanted to open.

"Ellie open that one." I pointed to a box.

"Okay." Ellie opened it, and inside was what I thought it was. "A bow!" I smiled, knowing exactly who got it for her. There was another box, with the same shape that I wanted to open.

I opened it as Ellie started to play with her bow. "Lovely." It was an elven sword, it had a green handle, and a silver blade. On the blade was a note that said, because you love nature. I had a sword already, but there isn't a problem with having two.

I pulled the sword out. "It's an elven sword." Arthur said to me.

"Yeah, I wonder who got the bow and sword for us." I winked at Arthur, then proceeded to place the sword in the mana ring on my finger. "Ellie, here."

I could see the look of surprise on everyone's face as I picked up a box that was from me to Ellie. "Is this from you?"

"Yeah, I got it while I was in Elenoir."

She opened the box and took out the green gem necklace. "Beautiful."

"It's lovely, Veer, I can't believe you got your sister a gift." My mom placed a hand around me.

"My turn." Arthur said as he handed a box to Ellie and my mother, then handed me a different one.

"Oh my!" My mother exclaimed as she pulled out a phoenix necklace.

Ellie did the same. "I have two necklaces now."

"These will protect you when we can't." Arthur told them, referring to Dad and him, not me. "Veer, go ahead and open yours."

I opened the box and inside was a red bracelet. "Nice." I pulled it out.

"It does the same thing the necklaces do, but I thought you would rather have a bracelet." He sent me a smile, as I placed it around my wrist.

"Thanks, Arthur." Ellie and I both said as we hugged him.
