Lines in the Dirt

CONNOR

A week after the rogue attack, I found her in the gym again.

It had become a habit: me hunting her down, pretending I had business nearby, when really I just needed to see what wildfire looked like in human form.

Lisa had given her free rein over the combat drills. I’d thought it was risky, but, gods, Willow had earned it.

She stood in the center of the mats, calm and composed as she barked instructions, which the pack obeyed. She had them doing drills I’d never seen, movements designed for speed and precision, not brute strength.

It seemed that today’s lesson was controlled aggression—and all of it was in their human forms. That was what impressed me most.

Fangs and claws made everything easier. But this? This was honed intelligence, weaponized instinct, and unflinching discipline. And my warriors listened to every sharp command—most didn’t even grumble.

Then, she started sparring with them. One after another, my pack stepped up. And one after another, she dismantled them. Half the time, they had no idea how they’d ended up on their backs. The rest of the time, they walked away dazed but in awe.

And whenever a male laid a hand on her, even in the name of training, my wolf curled its lip and growled.

I’d never felt such jealousy, and I hated how much I wanted to rip their hands off, to have her eyes on only me. But I said nothing, bit down on it, and swallowed it whole.

When I could, I joined in. I tossed out tips, adjusting a stance here and correcting a grip there. Willow didn’t seem to mind. In fact, when I added something to her technique, she nodded in a quiet, considering way that made my chest feel tight.

Like she valued my input—like we were a team.

But not everyone was thrilled.

The tension built noticeably throughout the lesson. Shoulders stiffened. Derisive comments flew. A few of the older wolves shifted their weight and sniffed the air in annoyance.

Then came the voice. “Maybe if the ~half wolf~ could actually shift, she’d be more than a clever human with a few tricks.”

The air went still.

I turned toward the speaker—an arrogant old blood who’d never liked outsiders, especially not ones more powerful than him.

Willow didn’t react or flinch. “Right,” she said, nodding. “So I take it that means you’re volunteering? Please, step forward. Show me ~your~ human tricks.”

He grinned as if he’d won something, and I couldn’t wait for her to show him he hadn’t.

They squared off, and from his first move, I could already see his mistake: He was going for brute strength. And she let him so she could redirect it. One move to unbalance him, another to sweep his legs.

He hit the ground flat on his back, but Willow flipped him onto his stomach before he could gasp. In an instant, she had his arm pinned behind him in a hold that threatened to snap bone. Without breaking a sweat, she held him firm while he thrashed under her.

When he tapped out, she hopped up and stepped away. The whole time, she’d remained calm, controlled, and unbothered. There’d been no cruelty in her movements nor triumph on her face—just professionalism, the kind that commanded respect.

Or fear.

The man scrambled back, red-faced and humiliated.

No one laughed, but the message was clear: She was much more than clever.

Ben appeared beside me, his arms crossed and eyes tracking Willow as she moved to correct a young warrior’s footwork like nothing had happened. “She’s a leader,” he said. “The pack’s starting to look at her like one.”

I nodded slowly.

“But is she still a threat?” he added.

I didn’t answer. Because I still didn’t know.

WILLOW

I found Connor alone in the training ring, shirtless and seething.

Harsh ceiling lights cast silver lines across the matted floor where Connor was punching a dummy, his body coiled with tension. The rhythmic strikes of his fists spoke of his brutal power.

He seemed to be exerting the kind of focused violence one didn’t waste in training unless they were trying not to feel something else. I wondered for a moment what that could be, but his glistening muscled back distracted me.

Before I could fully admire the view, he noticed me. “Couldn’t sleep?” he asked, facing me.

“Didn’t try,” I replied.

He turned, grabbed a pair of knives from a rack, and tossed one to me, handle first. “Up for another round?”

“Thought you were still nursing your ego after last time,” I teased.

“I heal fast.” He grinned, his smile crooked and devastating. “Even my ego.”

We circled each other with blades in hand. It was my first time sparring with a weapon—well, here, at least. I ran through all the proper handle grips and blade angles before preparing myself to feel pain.

But injury was only possible if I let him breach my defenses.

When his molten blue eyes met mine, I understood the wound I was really preparing for: emotional, not physical.

The tension between Connor and me had grown into something heavy. Lisa had told me it was because we’d been denying our wolves and the mate bond. I knew a decision would soon have to be made, and I’d have to be the one to make it.

Either I’d reject Connor or accept him.

So, was I ready to bring down my guards? To let him in and explore this mate bond? Looking at him now, I couldn’t say for certain.

Deciding it best to focus on the familiar, I struck first, feigning low before swinging at his side. He blocked, and his forearm brushed my ribs. We moved like ever-changing magnetic forces, clashing, repelling, and colliding again.

Each strike found its answer, and every touch lingered a beat too long.

Suddenly, he caught me midlunge, twisting us until I was flat on my back. He pressed his body flush against mine, his breath hot on my cheek before his blade found my throat.

He was close. Way too close.

Something rushed through me, spiking my senses. Suddenly, I felt everything: my skin buzzing from his full weight, his thigh slotted between mine, and his unmistakable arousal against my hip.

I froze, and so did he.

“You make it hard to focus.” His voice came out ragged.

“I… It’s not intentional,” was all I could think to say.

He stared into my eyes. “That’s what makes you dangerous, isn’t it?”

My heart fluttered in my chest, a wild thing scrambling to be set free. And then, as if this had triggered her release, my wolf surged, taking over my body.

Before I could think, I had Connor flipped onto his back while I straddled him, my knees pinning his arms and my blade pressing into the space just below his collarbone.

When I saw crimson welling up where the knife tip bit skin, I gasped. “Shit!

Connor, I didn’t mean—”

But the scent of his blood cut off my words. The world around me narrowed, and my body once again moved without me. I leaned down and licked the wound. His blood was fire and iron and something older than memory.

The moment I realized what I was doing, I recoiled, scorched by my own actions. “Sorry… I didn’t… Fuck!” I scrambled upright, still straddling him. My hands shook as the word ~monster~ flashed through my mind.

But he didn’t flinch, wasn’t angry or afraid. He sat up slowly, his fingers brushing the cut. His eyes never left me, carrying only that intense, unreadable affection. It was as if he were peering through every wall I’d ever built, every fear I’d run away from, right to my core.

“Willow.” He uttered my name with reverence. “You don’t have to be afraid of her.”

“But, she just took over!” I swallowed hard. “I didn’t even… Didn’t want to—”

“You did,” he said. “Maybe not with your head, but you did.”

After that, silence stretched between us, thick and trembling. I looked at him—really looked—and for a second, nothing else mattered except for him. And how he was looking at me like he’d already made his choice.

I leaned in, he met me halfway, and his lips were the last thing I saw before I closed my eyes.

Finally, I felt ready for my first real kiss.
