"Do you want a better life? A better look on society; on the world?" The News played in the background as Jenna cleaned the kitchen, the TV catching her attention every once and awhile. "We've created a legal drug that can make all of your sorrows go away." Jenna stopped in her tracks, brushing her hair out of her face with her hand, and glancing over at the TV.

"This world is plagued with depression. Plagued with sickness, and darkness. But we can take all of it away with one simple task." The man announced into the microphones, talking at a huge city conference. Some people were rioting about it while others were cheering the man on.

Jenna glanced over at the couch to see her boyfriend, Tyler, shaking his head. "The only thing plaguing this world are those pills." Tyler sighed, shifting his gaze to Jenna. "They're beginning to go door to door, practically handing them out as 'free samples'" he rolled his eyes.

Jenna smiled softly, setting the broom she had clasped in her hand down, and making her way over to the couch. "Well, they're not that bad. They make people happy, right?"

Tyler shook his head. "You're wrong." He said, deadpan. "These will end up killing us all, and they know it." He pointed his finger to the screen.

"Well, I don't find them that bad." Jenna mumbled, looking down at her lap. It didn't take long for Tyler to shift closer to her, lifting her chin up with a serious glare.

"Promise me if anyone comes to our door you will not answer it." He said, deliberately. "I want you safe."

Memories flooded her brain, making her shuffled back against the wall. There were so many memories she never thought she'd lost, that her happy little brain decided to toss and throw away due to its sad effect.

The second Jenna's eyes met Tyler's a wave of emotions hit her. She thought he was dead, but now that she remembers him holding her, and comforting her, all she could see was her dead boyfriend who died 3 years ago.

"N- y- no- you- I-" There were to many words to be spoken at once, her mouth not moving quick enough for the memories collapsing on top of her with no warning.

"Hey, shh, it's okay. I know." He comforted, reaching his hand inside the bars as if it'd help her calm down.

Jenna soon gave up trying to speak, letting out a long breath as she stared at him in shock. It was as if she had always known him. As if the stranger that took her here was no where in sight, and it was someone else sitting there. She saw features on his face that she didn't notice until now.

Tyler stood up, dusting off his jeans.

Without hesitation he opened the cell door, and came inside sitting himself down in the room with her. It was quite far from her, but by his posture she could tell he wanted to be closer. He wanted to hold her.

Tyler took a deep breath in. "Why don't you tell me what you remember? So I can help you fill in the holes."

Jenna didn't answer, glancing over at the fine leather couch, that she now noticed to not be so new as she thought. Tyler was right, it had multiple cuts and holes in it. She then looked at the walls. The building looked as though it could fall at any given moment, but seemed to hold its place in the ground. The floor was concrete but very dirty and moldy. The bars that held her enclosed were rusted and old. The only thing that seemed to keep its form and shape as it should be was the cooked meat that Tyler served her.

Tyler noticed her confusion of the drastic change. "I would give you the world if I could. But sadly, this is all we have for right now." He answered to her unspoken questions quietly, scooching his butt a little closer to her. "Whenever you're ready..." he said, referring to her telling him what she remembered.

Jenna took a deep breath, now finding the courage to speak. "Well..." she began.

"Promise you won't let anyone in?" Tyler repeated his question once he saw her in deep thought. He didn't want her to second guess. He wanted to keep her safe and this was the best way.

He wasn't one to control her decisions, letting her do what she wanted and pleased, but this wasn't something to take lightly. He might not have known all the details to the 'happy pills' but he knew it was life or death. And the happy pills weren't life.

"I promise." She managed to say, nodding her head lightly. He lifted his eyebrows, his face showing total determination, he wasn't taking no for an answer. He wanted to be sure she meant it. "I- I do, Ty, I promise. You don't have to worry."

He nodded, softly pecking her on the lips, before returning to his spot on the couch.

Tyler listened a little bit further, hearing the man exit his speech with: "thank you all for coming. I'm dr. Bourbaki." An eruption of questions and shouts were heard, that's when Tyler switched the channel to something more interesting.

Jenna stared out the window, seeing people making their way to the town square to join into the squabble. Dr. Bourbaki, the man who created the pills, lived right there in the city.

Were happy pills really that bad? Everyone seemed to like them.

"Doctor Nicolas Bourbaki." Tyler began after Jenna finished all she remembered at the moment. "He's the one who started this all."

Tyler shuffled over against the wall beside Jenna, getting comfortable so he could answer her questions.

"He started them out as simple pills that you could take every once and a while for a cheap price.

But as the people became addicted, the prices went up." He took a deep breath.

"He began manipulating people, telling them things that weren't true, giving them tiny lies that made them feel insecure and depressed, which made people crave the pills more and more." He glanced over at Jenna who had her eyebrows furrowed in thought. "He was smart; Ruining people's lives without them even knowing."

"How could he do that to all of the people in the city? There has to be at least a thousand people here." Jenna asked.

"You're right. He can't do it alone. He had help." Tyler agreed. "I'm not sure passed that point. At least about him."

Jenna felt a sinking feeling in her gut that she was foreign to. Her eyes felt heavy as if she was tired, but she knew she wouldn't be able to sleep.

Jenna knew about Dr. Bourbaki. He was known as a god in her city. The person who brought life to the people who thought they were lifeless. Jenna used to look up to him, see him as a role model, but now her jaw clenched at the thought of Dr. Bourbaki.

Another thought entered her mind that confused her.

"Why did Bourbaki tell me you were dead?"

Tyler sighed, giving her a sad smile. "Well, as the days went on the drugs became stronger; more apart of society. It became a trend in the schools, and the workplace.

It got to the point where it was frowned upon to deny the drugs.

You began questioning me, trying to make me understand that maybe the drugs weren't as bad as they seemed." Tyler chuckled sadly, shaking his head. "You were almost to the point of giving up and trying them, telling me it won't change as much in our lives as I thought. But I kept telling you that we'll move once we get enough money; which was getting harder and harder to earn.

Little did I know that the meds were spreading, not only through the city, but through the world. Making it a wasteland." Tyler gestured to the warehouse, and it's dirtiness. Jenna remembered how she thought it looked like a freshly made warehouse when she had the meds in her system. People must've been to happy to see the broken down city, and the messed establishments.

"One day, someone violently knocked on our door, when we didn't answer they kicked it down taking us and sticking a gun to my head as they held you up." He gulped at the traumatizing memory. "They were yelling at us. They said Dr. Bourbaki ordered them to kill anyone who denied the drug. And asked if we would take the them." Tyler stared at the ground. "I told them no that I didn't want them and that they could go on and kill me right then and there."

He glanced up in Jenna's direction. "But you were crying, and you said you'd take them."

He stared at Jenna for a moment, seeing the faint guilt in her eyes as she partially remembered. "They were about to shoot me for refusing, but Dr. Bourbaki was with them and told them not to kill me. Instead they they knocked you in the back of your head with a gun, making you unconscious, and took you away from me." Tyler's eyes began to water and he looked down again. "They took you away from me." He repeated, taking a few short breaths, trying to keep the tears at bay. "They took everything I ever cared about."

Jenna reached over, placing her hand on his shoulder, which startled Tyler. He didn't think she was ready to touch him just yet. Tyler continued. "Bourbaki came up to me and told me I was very brave for what I did, but that I was stupid for even thinking I could fight it. He told me that you abandoned me for something so much more greater; for a better life. And that if I didn't want to be happy then I'd get my wish."

"I don't why, but he dragged me out into a field, a fair distance away from the city, and left me there." Tyler shrugged. "I guess my punishment for denying the pills was suffering; not death."

Tyler finished his story, taking a deep breath and looking up into Jenna's blue eyes. They were slightly damp, her face filled with something she forgot about; sadness.

"I'm sorry I took the pills." She looked down, but Tyler lifted her chin with his fingers. She was a little stiff at first but relaxed at his touch.

"You did what you had to to stay alive. And I'm grateful that you did. I'd do the same thing if I was the one in your situation." Tyler smiled softly.

A half smile creeped on Jenna's face as she thought. "Will you tell me about us?" She asked, trying to change the conversion to something lighter.

Tyler removed his hands from her chin, a big smile plastering itself on his face. "Of course, sunshine."
