Days turned into weeks, and weeks into months. Ava and Michelle's friendship only grew stronger. They were inseparable-whether it was sitting together in class, eating lunch under their favorite tree in the schoolyard, or sharing secrets no one else knew.
To the world, Ava was a happy, cheerful girl, always laughing and joking around with Michelle. But behind that bright smile, she carried a weight that no one could see. At home, things weren't as perfect. Her parents were constantly arguing, and her mother, strict and controlling, never allowed her to go out and enjoy herself with friends.
One afternoon, as they sat together in the school cafeteria, Michelle nudged Ava playfully. "Hey, what are you doing this weekend? Sleepover at my place?"
Ava's eyes lit up for a brief moment, excitement flashing across her face. "Are you kidding? That sounds amazing! Movie marathon, midnight snacks, gossiping about everything-"She stopped mid-sentence, her smile faltering as reality hit her. "Wait... I don't think my mom will allow it."
Michelle frowned. "Again? Ava, you always say that. Have you even tried asking her?"
Ava sighed, stirring her juice with her straw. "You don't understand, Michelle. She won't even listen. She thinks going out with friends is a waste of time. And with my parents always fighting, she's been stricter than ever."
Michelle reached out and squeezed Ava's hand. "I know it's tough, Ava. But you deserve to have fun, to take a break from everything. Let's try to convince her together. Maybe if she knows you'll be with me, she'll agree?"
Ava hesitated. "I guess... I could try."
* THE STRUGGLE AT HOME*
That evening, Ava returned home, bracing herself for yet another difficult conversation.
The moment she stepped inside, she could hear her parents arguing in the other room.
She closed her eyes for a moment, trying to block out the shouting, before quietly heading to the kitchen, where her mother was angrily washing dishes.
"Mom?" Ava called hesitantly.
Her mother turned around, clearly frustrated. "What is it, Ava?"
Ava took a deep breath.
"Michelle invited me for a sleepover this weekend. Can I go?"
Her mother scoffed, wiping her hands on a towel.
"Ava, how many times do I have to tell you?
You have no time for these useless things. You need to focus on your studies and stop wasting your time with friends."
Ava clenched her fists.
"Mom, it's just one night. I always do what you ask, I study hard, I stay at home-I never get to do anything fun! Just this once, please."
Her mother's expression hardened. "I said no, and that's final. Go to your room."
Ava felt a lump form in her throat, but she knew arguing further wouldn't change anything.
With heavy steps, she walked away, closing the door to her room and collapsing onto her bed.
Minutes later, her phone buzzed.
Michelle : What did she say?
Ava: She said no. She doesn't even care how I feel.
Michelle : That's not fair. You do everything she asks, and she still won't let you live a little.
Ava : I don't know what to do, Michelle. I feel trapped.
Michelle : You're not alone, Ava. We'll figure something out. I promise.
*A RISK WORTH TAKING*
The next day at school, Michelle had an idea. "Ava, listen. If she won't let you come to my place, then I'll come to yours.
I'll tell her how responsible I am and that we'll only study if she wants. Maybe then she'll agree."
Ava was hesitant. "She might not even let you in."
"It's worth a try, isn't it?" Michelle said, determined.
That evening, Michelle showed up at Ava's house. When Ava's mother opened the door, Michelle smiled politely.
"Hello, Mrs. Shella. I'm Michelle, Ava's best friend. I wanted to talk to you about something."
Her mother raised an eyebrow.
"Ava didn't tell me you were coming."
Michelle didn't let that stop her.
"I just wanted to say that Ava is an amazing friend, and she works really hard. She deserves a break.
I promise we won't do anything irresponsible-we can even study if you prefer. But please, let her have this one night of fun."
Ava watched nervously as her mother crossed her arms, deep in thought.
FINALLY,
after what felt like an eternity, she sighed. "Fine. But only if she finishes all her homework first. And no staying up too late."
Ava's mouth fell open in shock. "Wait... really? You mean it?"
Her mother nodded. "Just this once."
Ava turned to Michelle, eyes wide with excitement. "Michelle, we did it!"
Michelle grinned. "I told you we'd figure something out!"
