Aisha jerked her head around with a start. Sheâd been staring into space, and now everyone was looking at her. âIâm o-okay.â
âIs itâ¦is it going to hurt?â Chloe suddenly asked. Her cheeks were glowing as they all turned to look at her.
âIt might,â Brenda said. âBut only really the first time.â
âBut heâs soâ¦but itâs soâ¦â
ââ¦big?â Juan interjected. âThey are big, yes.â
âWonât it hurt more?â Chloe asked in a small voice.
âPerhaps. Iâm not sure, to be honest,â Brenda admitted.
âI donâtâI donât think I can do it,â Chloe continued, her shoulders hunching up to her ears.
âItâs normal to be afraid,â Myeong said, leaning across the table. âBut if heâs anything like my Roco, heâll be gentle, despite his size. My husbandââshe twisted her mouthââmy husband was much smaller, and heâand he hurt. Itâs the way they use it. Not its size.â
Chloe looked away, biting her lip. She shook her head. âItâs not just that. Itâsâitâs wrong.â She looked at them all, her eyes darting between the women before falling upon Juan. âItâsâitâs not what God would want.â
Juan narrowed his eyes. Brenda frowned. Aisha stared, her heart pounding, knowing exactly what she meant. It was the same thing Aisha felt deep down in her own mind, though she didnât have the courage to say it.
âWho says?â Juan snapped. âYou crazy-ass republicans?â A hush fell upon the room.
âJuanâ¦,â Brenda warned.
He snorted. âHate to break it to you, ~little girl~, but there ainât no God. If there was one, do you think weâd be here?â He gestured at the room. Then he pointed at his eyes. âDo you think this would happen to me? How do you explain that?â
Chloe straightened in her seat. âGod works in mysterious ways.â
Juan gave a barking laugh. Chloe was looking resolute, though her face blazed even more.
âThatâs enough!â Alexis said. She looked at Chloe. âI believe in God. But I donât believe in ~that~ bullshit. If God didnât want me to do this, then why am I so damn happy? The happiest Iâve ever been?â She pointed at her face. âLook at me. You think thereâs something wrong with me?â
Aisha could tell Chloe was struggling to answer.
âLeave her alone,â Brenda said. âSheâs only a kid.â
Juan scoffed. âSheâs not a kid at all.â He leaned across the table toward her, looking mean. âUse your God as an excuse all you want, but youâre going to fall for Tor and turn just like the rest of us.â He gave a nasty grin. âAnd I bet itâll be before the week is out.â
Chloe lifted her chin. âI will not.â
Juan laughed.
âChloe,â Brenda said. The girlâs eyes turned to the redhead. âBelieve what you like, but I donât agree. None of us agree, and neither do the aliens. Justâ¦just try not to feel bad when it happens. Because it ~will~ happen.â
âIt wonât,â she said, folding her arms.
âThen why are you asking us these questions?â Alexis asked.
Chloe glared at them all. Then her eyes started to shine. Her face crumpled, and she dropped her head into her hands, her fingers clawing into her hair. Aisha stood and went over, gripping her shoulder. She felt a strange sense of camaraderie for the American. They were both so similar in many ways. And the only two left unbondedâother than Karina.
Juan sighed and shook his head. Alexis was frowning.
âWeâre all here to support you,â Brenda told them both. âIf you ever need help for anythingâcall me. Or any of us.â
QUINTON
âJust wait, Tor. She seems fine,â Quinton said.
âSheâs upset. Theyâve said something to her,â Tor said, grabbing the doorâs handle as he glared through the window into the lesson room.
âThey might be talking about the bonding. It is a scary thingâparticularly for one so young,â Clint said.
âSheâs ~crying~,â Tor said.
âYouâre not going to help by marching in there,â Quinton continued. âSit down.â
Tor shook his head.
âSit down, Tor,â Roco growled. âLet them speak.â
Tor turned to glare at the big Zibon. With a scowl, he sat.
âHow much did she bleed, Zibry?â Quinton asked.
âQuite a bit.â
Shaking his head, Quinton watched as Aisha picked up one of the paddings and studied it, her face twisted in dismay.
âI canât believe that. How can that be normal?â Clint said.
âAre you sure you just didnât hurt her?â Roco asked.
âIâm sure!â Zibry snapped, his eyes flashing. âShe ~told~ me.â
âOkay, okay,â Roco said, waving his hands.
âAnd thatâs not all,â Zibry said, folding his arms as he gazed through the window. âThereâs something you need to know, Tor, Quinton.â
Quinton turned to him. âWhat?â
âApparently it can hurt the first time. It can actually be ~quite~ painful.â
âWhat do you mean?â Tor frowned.
Zibry explained about what he called the âhymen.â Quinton and Tor glanced at each other.
âWhat the fuck is the point of that?â Tor asked.
Zibry shrugged. âNo idea. Itâs just there.â
Quinton gazed through the window at Aisha. How was he supposed to do this? How could he hurt her? Tor looked troubled.
âYou just need to be aware of it,â Zibry said. âApparently all Rictorian women go through it.â
âSuch a complicated, difficult species,â Clint said.
âNo kidding,â Tor agreed.
âMaybeâ¦maybe thereâs a way we can remove it surgically?â Quinton suggested.
Zibry shrugged. âPerhaps, but like I said, Brenda says itâs normal.â
âWeâre bigger than an average Rictorian male,â Quinton said quietly.
They were silent.
âIs there anything else we need to know about?â Tor asked gruffly.
âPlenty, Iâm sure,â Zibry said.
More silence followed as they all stared through the window.
âAny further news on the infirmary?â Roco asked.
âTheyâre waking up, thatâs all I know,â Quinton said. âExcept forâ¦except for Halo. Heâs still struggling. They had to put him on life support. He stopped breathing.â
âShit,â Clint said.
âFuck,â Tor echoed.
âWhat are they thinking? Is he salvageable?â Roco asked.
âThey donât know.â
They fell quiet.
AISHA
âSo, all of them are bonded?â Myeong asked, her eyes bright with surprise.
âApparently,â Alexis said, looking down at the bench. âAll thirteen of them.â
Aisha frowned. âWh-whatâs wrong?â
Alexis looked up. âI feel guilty, of course. These women had no choice.â
âWe didnât have a choice,â Juan said.
âWe kind of did,â Alexis said. âAt least we knew what we were getting into. At least we knew what bonding was.â
âThose men had to be saved,â Brenda said.
âI know, but it doesnât mean I have to feel good about it.â
âWh-whatâs going to happen to them now?â Aisha asked.
Alexis shrugged. âI suppose we just wait for the Zibons to get better.â
âAnd theyâll stay on board with us?â Myeong asked. âThe women?â
Alexis nodded.
Myeong smiled. âThatâs good. I could do with some more company.â
âWhat is bonding?â
They all turned to look at Chloe, who ducked her face.
âYou donât know?â Juan asked.
Myeong was staring at her. âTor asked me to speak with you about it.â
âAnd me at one point, I think,â Brenda said. âIâm surprised he still hasnât told you.â
âWe donâtâ¦â She bit her lip. ââ¦we donât talk that much yet.â
They all looked at each other.
âWhat about you?â Brenda asked Aisha. âDo you know what bonding is?â
Aisha nodded. She went to pull her hair across her face, then stopped herself. âHe told me.â
âAnd how do you feel about it?â Juan asked.
âIâIâm oâokay.â
âAre you going toââ
âJuan, thatâs kind of private, donât you think?â Brenda interrupted.
Juan shrugged. âI donât know why you just donât do it already. Itâs great!â
Brenda was shaking her head. âSex is different for a woman than it is for a man.â
Myeong moved over to Chloe and took a seat beside her. She began to whisper to her.
Aisha glanced toward Brenda, attempting to catch her eye. But Brenda was engaged in conversation with Juan. Alexis, meanwhile, looked thoughtful as she stared into the mirror behind them.
Aisha wanted to voice her thoughts, but the words wouldnât come. Chloe might have been fearful about bonding, but Aisha wasnât. Not anymore.
~It doesnât matter. Youâre my match. Once weâre bonded, nothing like that will matter.~
Aisha turned her gaze to the mirror, her mind returning to the image of Quinton convulsing on the floor. She lowered her head. But it did matter. It mattered to ~her~.
