Tyrone kept things vague, only saying that his mother and Nicoleâs mother had always been close friends.
Alicia nodded, half-understanding.
Since Tyrone clearly didnât want to reveal the real reason, Alicia didnât press him for more.
After all... using his motherâs last wish as an excuse to uphold an engagementâthat just seemed a little far-fetched.
...
Tyrone put work aside to stay with Alicia constantly.
Nicole, on the other hand, was getting anxious. She was terrified that if Alicia went for a checkup, the pregnancy would be discovered. She tried every possible way to get rid of the baby Alicia was carrying, but she never even got the chance.
Tyrone didnât let Alicia out of his sight.
âItâs strange. I havenât heard back from Melanie in days,â Alicia mused, sitting on the couch and staring at her phone.
Except for that one time Melanie ditched her to go shopping with her grandfather, Alicia couldnât think of anything sheâd done to upset her.
âSheâs just got a childish streak. Gets her feelings hurt over nothing. Ignore her,â Tyrone said, bringing Alicia a plate of freshly sliced fruit and settling in beside her.
âNo, Iâm worried. Iâm going to call her,â Alicia said, unable to shake her unease. She dialed Melanieâs number.
But Melanie hung up the call immediately.
âWill you try?â Alicia looked at Tyrone, pleading.
Tyrone nodded and called Melanie himself. She hung up on him, too.
Aliciaâs anxiety grew. âDo you think somethingâs happened? Should we go to her school to check on her?â
She remembered hearing a rumor that Melanie was dating someone at school.
Sure, dating in college wasnât exactly scandalousâbut Melanie was so naïve, so easy to take advantage of.
Tyrone nodded and got up to take Alicia to the campus.
Rich Radiant and Over Him (Alicia and Vincent)
Once there, they spoke to Melanieâs advisor, who told them Melanie had been absent for two days.
She hadnât been at school at all.
Now Alicia was really panicking. âTyrone, what do we do? What if somethingâs happened to her?â
Tyrone tried to soothe her. âDonât worry. Iâll have someone look for her right away.â
He had Alicia wait in the car while he made some calls outside, talking quietly but with a growing frown.
After half an hour, Tyrone climbed back in, his face grim. âMelanie found out her mother isnât dead. She ran away from home in a fit of angerâsheâs staying at a hotel.â
Aliciaâs eyes widened in shock. Melanie knew that Serena was still alive? âYou all kept this from her... I can see why sheâd have a hard time accepting it.â
Tyrone nodded silently and started the car, heading toward the hotel where Melanie was staying.
During the drive, Alicia grew more and more anxious.
If Melanie had learned the truth, then Serena must have met with her in person. That meant Serena was doing well enough to get around on her own...
But if that was the case, what would Tyrone do about Serena? Where would she fit in now?
âTyrone, the rehab center called. Iâve been cleared for discharge,â Serenaâs voice came suddenly over the phone, as if summoned by Aliciaâs worries.
âPick up Melanie and come get me, will you?â Serena instructed, as if it was the most natural thing in the world.
She had no problem telling Tyrone what to do, Alicia thought. Maybe thatâs what happens when you betray someone you know loves youâyou stop caring about consequences.
Alicia stared down at her hands, unsure what Tyroneâs next move would be.
Surely... he wasnât planning for all of them to live together under one roof?
