The housekeeper let out a weary sigh, feeling sorry for the couple. "And this Jade? She's Reginald's illegitimate granddaughterânot really a true heir.
If the real Ms. White, who's been lost for years, ever turns up, then the entire White family fortune would rightfully belong to Nicole, the genuine daughter."
Alicia nodded, only half understanding.
The White family really was a tangled mess.
A loud bang came from upstairsâsomething heavy thrown against the wall in Melanie's room. The message was clear: this was for Alicia to hear.
Melanie had never been shy about her displeasure.
Alicia could only grit her teeth and endure it.
Her marriage to Tyrone, when you got down to it, was nothing more than a job.
And what job doesn't drive you a little crazy?
...
After a sleepless night, Alicia had hoped to squeeze in a nap before heading to Lawson & Co. to sign her resignation papers. But Melanie was blasting club music downstairs, the bass shaking the floor. There was no way Alicia could sleep at all.
With dark circles under her eyes and a bitter heart, she left the villa.
If the lady of the house decided to throw another tantrum that night, would Alicia even survive it?
"Alicia, is it true you're leaving?" The moment she stepped into the office, her old coworkers swarmed around.
Alicia nodded politely.
"So, what's the deal with you and Mr. Lawson? Did you two really hook up?" one of them teased shamelessly, grinning.
Alicia ignored them.
"Wow, Alicia, you must have some serious skillsâlanding Mr. Lawson and all. Come on, spill your secrets!"
She stayed silent.
"Alicia." Vincent's cold voice cut through the chatter, and the room fell silent.
Alicia glanced over. Vincent stood beside Mina, and with them was a tall, unremarkable-looking man whose unfriendly stare lingered on Alicia, sizing her up from head to toe.
Mina smiled, introducing him. "Alicia, this is Gregory Harrisonâjust made permanent in the projects department. He's very capable. His family's not rich, but he's a good match for you. If you married him, you'd have a stable, comfortable life."
Alicia looked at Vincent, searching his face.
He avoided her gaze, saying nothing. Clearly, he was leaving this up to Mina.
"Vin, let's leave these two alone to get acquainted," Mina said brightly, latching onto Vincent's arm as if to shepherd him away.
Alicia kept her expression neutral. "I'm just here to finalize my resignation. If Gregory's such a catch, you should marry him yourself, Mina." With that, she strode toward HR.
"Alicia!" Vincent caught her wrist, frowning. "I went to HR myself to approve your promotion, and now you want to quit? What are you playing at?"
"Mr. Lawson, I'm heading abroad for grad school this fall. I can't keep working here." Alicia pulled her hand free.
"Who said you could go? I haven't agreed to help you secure a spot yet." Vincent's face darkened. "Are you trying to take Chloe's place? I told you, if you just cooperate, I can pull some stringsâ"
"No need, Mr. Lawson. Chloe's spot was mine to begin with, but I don't care anymore. I've already got a new offer," Alicia replied coolly, then walked away.
Vincent felt a tightness in his chest.
Who got her the new spot? Was it Tyrone?
Were she and Tyrone still that close?
The more he thought about how Tyrone always rushed to help Alicia, the more suffocated Vincent felt.
Was she going to be Tyrone's new mistress?
He grew angrier by the second, so much so that he forgot Mina was right there. In front of everyone, he grabbed Alicia's arm and dragged her into his office, slamming the door and locking it behind them.

She'd wanted everyone to see Alicia make a fool of herselfâbut now, she was the one left looking ridiculous.
