Edward laughed heartily. âNo, I was just startled for a moment. Oh, I remember now! Youâre Hannah Lower, and I remember you were a crybaby who would turn on the waterworks easily when we were young.â Glaring at him, Hannah retorted, âThatâs all because you broke my heart.â
âI was ignorant back then. Donât hold it against me,â he said with a chuckle. As though he just remembered Lara, he spun his head around at her. âLara, come over quickly. Can you still recognize our old classmates?â
However, she was still held back by a bodyguard and could only smile awkwardly. Only then did Edward snap back to the situation. As he was overjoyed to see his old classmates, he had forgotten about the current situation. Why did Eugene bring all of them here? âAll of you are here because...â he trailed off, his voice filled with bafflement.
âFirstly, I must apologize to you,â Nigel started. âIâve been feeling bad all these years, actually, but later when I heard that youâre together with Lara, I thought it was a good thing and didnât say anything. This time when your son found us, I learned that Ellen had already passed away in a car accident.â A confused Edward said, âTell me the main point. What do you mean?â
âDo you remember our first gathering after graduation?â Nigel asked. âIt was in a restaurant that caught fire after that.â
Nodding his head blankly, Edward answered, âI remember, and it was Lara who saved me.â Nigel helplessly shook his head. âIt wasnât like that-â Before he could finish, Laraâs panicked voice echoed loudly. âNigel Lowe!â
When all eyes darted toward her, she forced herself to be composed and tried to turn the situation around. âI recognize you now.
Oh my, itâs been years since we last met. You still remember me, right?â
A frosty smile appeared on Nigelâs face. âFor sure I do. Youâre my first love.â After Hannah cast an indifferent stare at him, he immediately explained with a grin, âIâm only saying that to start the story of what happened back then. Of course, my favorite person is you, my wife!â
It was only then did Hannah turn away. Edward blurted in surprise, âBoth of you are married?â âYeah. Fortunately, sheâs the one I married,â Nigel answered. âIâm also glad that youâre the one I married!â she said as well.
Everyone burst out into laughter hearing that, for those who didnât know, they just listened to it as a joke, but Edward knew that Lara was the one whom Nigel liked at first and Hannah had a crush on himself. Now, both of them were married to each other and what was more frustrating was that they sounded so glad.
Inexplicably, he had a feeling that those statements were like two slaps across his and Laraâs faces. Why are they glad? Was it because Lara and I are not good? Or, are they purposely respecting each other in front of a crowd? In spite of that, he still didnât know what Nigel wanted to say. âSo, tell me. What happened?â
he asked. âThe fire back then was deliberately set by someone and it wasnât an accident at all,â Nigel confessed. An astonished Edward asked, âWho did it?â
Pointing a finger at Laraâs direction, Nigel answered, âItâs her!â Following Nigelâs gaze, Edward gazed at Lara with a livid face in the end and he was shocked. âThatâs impossible! Why would she commit arson?â
Nigel snorted and turned to look at Lara. âDo you want me to say it for you or you want to say it yourself?â Gritting her teeth with hatred, she wondered just how capable and influential Eugene was. Not only was he able to find them, he was even able to convince them to testify for him. It seemed like he had been hiding his true powers in their previous exchanges!
