âWere you there that day when Mr. Roadâs mother came that day?â Tiffany asked. âShe kept asking questions about Jewel Fenton. Maybe she disagrees with how Mr. Road handled the situation, too.â
âExactly. Just get rid of her quickly. I donât mind losing to you. After all, youâre prettier and more capable than me, but it will be so embarrassing for me if I lose to Jewel, who canât even string a coherent sentence herself!â Mary exclaimed. Tiffany sighed helplessly. âWell, what can we do since Mr. Road likes her?â
While they were happily chatting away, she pushed the bathroom door open and met Jewelâs sharp eyes. Immediately, she froze on the spot, and her mind went blank as she stopped in her tracks awkwardly.
Mary went on with her criticisms, utterly unaware that the topic of their discussion was standing right outside, saying, âYeah.
Sheâs neither gentile nor pretty, and she isnât even ladylike. Furthermore, sheâs a mute...â
She walked out while talking and caught sight of Tiffanyâs expression. She quickly sensed. something amiss, so she followed Tiffanyâs gaze and shut her mouth with her snap when she saw Jewelâs face.
Maryâs heart sank to the bottom of her stomach at the sight. Oh, no! she thought. There was nothing more frightening than being caught red-handed when talking behind othersâ backs.
Jewel stared at them with piercing eyes as she struggled to force out a sentence from her throat. âI can talk. Whatever it is, it has nothing to do with you.â
Both of them didnât dare to reply as they lowered their heads and wanted to leave by slipping past her, but she wouldnât allow them to leave just like that. She took a step to the side, stopped them without a word, and merely glared at them with her sharp eyes.
Her cold gaze was like a dagger drenched in poison that was slowly approaching them and Mary was so scared that she could feel her legs wobbling. Why is her gaze so frightening? Mary thought in fright. She didnât dare to look at Jewel as she stuttered, âI-Iâm sorry.â
Jewel looked away from Mary and focused on Tiffany, who hurriedly apologized, âIâm sorry.â After that, Jewel reminded them composedly. âStop criticizing others. Itâs despicable!â
âOkay,â Tiffany mumbled, grabbed Maryâs hand, and fled. âMy god, sheâs so terrifying,â she whispered, scurrying away.
âShe is, Mary agreed. âSheâs always appearing. out of nowhere like this that I sometimes wonder if sheâs a ghost. Otherwise, why doesnât she make a noise when she walks? Scary!â Tiffany hurriedly threw a look behind them. âShh! Lower your voice, or she will hear you!â
Then, the two women returned to the secretary department in a hurry. Meanwhile, Jewel washed her hands and had just stepped out of the bathroom when her cell phone in her pocket started ringing.
When she checked the caller ID, she saw that it was an unknown number ending with 6666. Due to the fact that she couldnât speak, she would usually send text messages instead of making calls.
Nonetheless, she decided to pick up this call after considering it. It seemed unlikely that this person had called the wrong number using such an interesting number, right? she thought. Moreover, Iâm not a mute! After she accepted the call, she tried her best to speak normally. âHello?â
On the other end of the line, a middle-aged woman said, âYouâre Jewel Fenton, arenât you?â
âYes, and may I know whoâs this?â Jewel asked. Iâm Alexâs mother,â the woman responded. âI know you canât really talk, so just listen. Iâm in Seven Degrees Cafe, which is located near your office, and I have some things to tell you. So free up some time and come over. Iâll be waiting here for you.â
The situation dawned on Jewel, and she answered, âOkay.â âDonât inform Alex about this and just come here alone, Stefanie Mayer said and hung up straight away.
A puzzled Jewel wondered, Why is Alexâs mother looking for me? And she even wants me to keep this from him. Regardless, she didnât have the time to ponder over the question.
