The following afternoon, Priya took the elevator down to Tonyaâs floor. The wall pulsed with Top 40 beats coming from her friendâs room. Priya knocked, then hammered the door until a salon-fresh blonde opened up.
âIâm here for Tonya.â
âWhat?â
Priya shouted over some kind of autotuned Michael Jackson clone.
âTonya!â
âCheck the library.â
Tonyaâs roommate did not turn the music down. She was too busy staring at Priyaâs clothes.
âPleased to meet you, Iâm Priya.â She stuck out her hand.
âLynette.â Blondie defended the entrance like a goalie.
Priya thumbed Tonya a quick text.

âWeâre going out tonight. Can I wait here?â Priya moved forward.
Lynette took a step back, allowing her to see the twin chairs and beds on either side of the room.
âThanks.â Priya breezed in past Lynette. âTonight, sheâs joining the best club on campus. Do you like film?â
âItâs a cheap date.â
âWant to make a movie?â
âOh, absolutely!â Lynette laughed. âToo bad Iâm busy, going out with my boyfriend.â
âRain check?â
âYouâre funny.â
Priya put on a smile. âHow lovely to meet Tonyaâs friends.â
âWhat friends?â Lynette shook her head. âShe hates music, always wants quiet. Itâs like living with a grumpy librarian!â
âDonât worry, Iâll do my best to corrupt her.â Priya checked her phone, again.
Lynette crossed her arms. âSo, is she coming or not?â
âSheâs not responding.â
âGame over. Thanks for playing.â Lynette hurried Priya to the door. âBetter luck next time.â Lynette forced Priya into the hall and slammed the door.
I think this makes us besties. Priya glanced up the hall for witnesses but she was alone.
Her phone pinged. It was Tonya, calling to say she was finished at the library.
âLetâs meet at the pub,â said Priya. âI just met your wonderful roommate, and while Iâd love to stick around and lap up her charm, I wouldnât want to impose on her generosity.â
