Chapter 19

So there Alexia was, sitting tied to the wheelchair in the middle of the common room.  She could easily get out of it though.  She concentrated on the rope that she was tied with.  She made sure to get the rope warm, but only the rope and nothing else.  She only wanted to catch the rope on fire, not her clothes or the wheelchair, that might end up bad.

The bonds were starting to get warmer, and as they did they turned slightly pink.  Just as they were starting to feel warm enough to split in half Cheater stepped out of his apartment and broke her concentration.  When he noticed her, he dropped whatever it was he was holding.  The look on his face was so priceless that Alexia couldn’t help but laugh.  His mouth was hanging wide open and his eyes were wide as well.  He took a step towards her, presumably to help, but she quickly shook her head at him.  She knew that she had this in the bag, after she regained her concentration.

The bonds around her chest had finally gotten hot enough that they snapped, without even having a flame.  Alexia quickly cooled hem down before they could catch on fire.  She had only snapped the bonds over her chest, so she bent down to untie the ones on her legs.  She wanted to keep the rope from her legs, so they could use it when they escaped if they needed it.  She looked over and smiled when she noticed that Cheater still had his mouth wide open.

“Wow, that was so cool!” Cheater said excitedly.  Alexia smiled at his childishness, it suited him well.

“Um, thanks.  I can’t believe that he did that though!  Well, actually I can, because it is Dillenwater.  But that’s still a horrible thing to do!  He could have at least cut the rope!”  Alexia said loudly and irritably, feeling her body heat up in her anger.

“Woah, why don’t you calm down before you catch something on fire!  You’re glowing pink, like your rope was earlier, and I don’t think that’s a very safe thing, at least not for me to be standing next to you.” Cheater said calmly, slowly taking a step backwards.  He tried to calm her without getting near enough to get burned.  Alexia felt bad that she worried him, and she slowly tried to cool her body temperature down so she wouldn’t burn anything, or anyone!

She took a deep, calming breath.  “Ok, I’m counting now.”

“Good, save that anger for when we need it!  I’m sure you can work up some rage then!  We might need it!”  Cheater said patting her arm softly with a smile.

“Yeah,” she replied “I’m sure that I can, I have plenty of anger and rage from this place.  Where is everyone by the way?  I haven’t seen any of them but you.”  She asked, looking around.  She had wanted to start working on the plan that day after she finally told Adam about it.

“They’re all in your apartment, waiting on us.  I was busy getting these.”  He said, going to where he dropped his things when he saw her.

“Board games!” Alexia cried out happily, seeing the boxes of games in his hands.  He had Monopoly, Sorry, and Trouble.  Those were some of the best board games ever made in Alexia’s book.  “Wait, I thought that I had board games in my closet.”  She said thoughtfully, remembering that they had played them before.

“Really?  So I went and got these for no reason? Man! I could have stayed on the couch.”  Cheater said sadly.  Alexia had to laugh at his expression; it looked like someone had run over his puppy or something.  ‘He can’t be that sad about it!’  Alexia thought with a wide smile.  Cheater was a strange boy after all, he might be sad about it.

“Aww, poor Cheater didn’t get to be lazy like he wanted.”  She said out loud, and then she sent a quick thought to him.  ‘You had better not be lazy after we escape, we’ll be moving around a lot for a while.’

Cheater smiled slowly and nodded.  “Let’s go inside then, you really need to talk to Adam.”  He said softly, making sure that she knew the underlying meaning.  He was telling her to tell Adam about the escape plan, and she was definitely ready to so they could begin planning for it.  They needed a plan soon if they wanted to leave before they did ‘experiment C’ on Alexia, whatever that was.  Cheater really needed to tell her, and she made sure that he heard her think that, but he just chuckled at her.  He smiled at her and walked into Alexia’s apartment with her following closely behind him.

The minute the door was opened; Cheater stepped inside the doorway and to the left, leaving Alexia to be tackled by four small bodies.  Alexia fell over and landed with Adam, Jada, Trixie, and Jared lying on top of her.  She couldn’t see them, but she could hear both Cheater and Damon laughing at the lot of them.  She was ok with it though, because she loved the four kids that were lying on top of her, even if their weight was currently crushing her.  “Ok you guys, you’re starting to hurt me here!  Gosh you guys are fat!”  She yelled out jokingly.  “Get off of me and I’ll give you guys a hug or something!”  She said loudly, wanting to be able to breathe again.  Almost instantly, they jumped off of her and she was hauled to her feet.  Within seconds, she was surrounded again, this time not falling down.

“After a moment of hugging, the kids let go of Alexia and settled down in the living room.  Cheater brought out the games that be brought over from his apartment, while shooting him a look that meant he wished he thought to use hers.  He, Damon, and the younger kids went to lie on the carpet in front of the TV to play games.

Alexia smiled at everyone, but grabbed Adam’s hand, pulling him into the kitchen with her.  She had to talk to him about escaping, and preferably alone.  She thought that he would do much better with the news if she told him alone; at least, she hoped that it would help.  They only had two days until they did ‘experiment C.’ Actually, they only had one day if the day of the experiment wasn’t counted as well.  They really had to get moving on making their plan.

“What’s going on Alexia?  Why are we in here?” Adam asked confusedly.  ‘He must have been such an innocent boy before these jerks brought him her to do tests on him.  Now he’s been through so much.’  The thought of it made Alexia even more determined to get them out of the school, all of them.

“Adam, I need to tell you something very important.  The scientists can’t know about this ok?”  She said softly and he nodded back.  She leaned closer to and whispered to tell him about the idea of escaping.  When she was finished she leaned back and looked at him.  His eyes were wide and he hadn’t said anything yet.

“So we’re going to leave here, escape?”  He asked her quietly.

“Yes Adam, but we’re not leaving without you.  We aren’t prepared to leave anyone behind, especially not you.  So will you go with us?”  She asked, a prick of fear growing within her at the thought of him saying no.

He thought for a moment for a moment, and Alexia’s fear grew larger by the second.  Finally, after what seemed like an eternity for Alexia, he broke into a wide grin and Alexia let out a breath that she hadn’t realized she had been holding in.  “Of course I’ll go with you!  But how are we going to leave?”  He said with a soft smile, his small face tight with worry despite the smile.

“That’s what we’re going to work on today.  Everyone else already knows, I just wanted to tell you myself.””  She said, gesturing for him to follow her.  The two went back into the living room of the apartment, where all of the kids were relaxing on the carpet in front of the TV playing different board games.

“Ok everyone, follow me.  I have something to show all of you.  Come on.”  She said, heading for her closet.  All of the kids knew about the secret room, so all of them except for Cheater and Damon was excited to see it, and they would be too if they hadn’t seen it already.  Alexia went into the closet and quickly opened the secret door and went through it before the closet got too full.  After everyone was gathered around the pile of supplies and papers, Alexia motioned for them all to sit on the floor and make themselves comfortable.

She spent the next twenty minutes showing them all of the maps, supplies, and the letter from Roger Reedom.  Everyone was excited and ready to get to work on the plan.  While they sprouted off ideas, the girls packed seven backpacks with things that they thought they might need.

About two hours later, they had a plan.  It was a crazy plan, and it still needed some work, but at least they had something to go off of.  It involved everyone using their powers, some in ways that they had never thought of before.  They had agreed to each practice their power every chance that they had until time to escape, which they hadn’t decided on a time yet, so Alexia had to go to her next experiment the next day.

The new ‘power’ that Dillenwater had told her she was going to get hadn’t shown up by the time everyone went back to their own rooms.  She wondered if it would show up at all, or if it was going to, if she would have it by the next experiment.  She had asked Cheater when the next experiment was, and he told her that she was scheduled for four o’clock the next day.  That meant that they had all the time from when they woke up until then to practice their powers and work on their plan.

After finding herself some food, Alexia got herself ready to settle down for the night.  She showered and dried her hair quickly, wanting to get as much sleep as possible.  She knew that she really needed it since they were doing another experiment on her the next day.  After drying her hair, she washed her face and put on her pajamas.  She slid into bed feeling content, the day may not have been perfect but at least the group had a plan in the working.
