In me and my sister's apartment, me and Wesley are getting dressed to go to work.
"We didn't really think this through." Wesley said
"I totally forgot what today was." I told him
"I probably should've picked a less loaded day for our first sleepover." He said
"Um - I didn't get you a gift." I said
"Oh. Well, then it's gonna be super awkward when your presents get here. I guess I can still cancel the violinist." He said with a chuckle then continued "I'm kidding. Forgot it was Valentine's Day, too. So, we'll just have to settle for this. Hmm." He said and kissed me and I kissed him back "When can I see you again?"
"Um - Saturday?" I said in a questioning tone
"Oh, I have to drive up to Salinas Prison to meet a client. You could come with. Make a weekend out of it." He says
"Sounds romantic." I told him
"Could be." Wesley said
"Um, maybe next time." I told him
"You're not having second thoughts about dating the enemy, are you?" He asks
"Defense attorneys aren't the enemy. They're just a pain in the ass we have to deal with on the daily." I tell him truthfully
"Cause we hold you accountable." Wesley said
"Because..." I started saying
"Uh-huh?" Wesley asked
"Nope. Not going there. That's my gift to you." I tell him
"Well, wish me luck. I'm going in front of Judge Bollard this morning. He eats defense attorneys for breakfast." Wesley says
"If anyone can charm him, it's you." I tell him with a smile on my face and he laughs
"Mmm." Wesley said and we kiss each other and Angela decided to enter my room
"Soph, if you bring a guy over, tell me so I can give you privacy for you know what." Angela tells me then leaves the room
"Yeah, yeah whatever." I say and Wesley laughs and we both leave to go to our jobs
I soon got to the briefing room and when everyone was here Grey started talking about Valentines day.
"All right, we know what today is. The most dangerous day of our year." Grey says
"Valentine's Day, sir? Really? Not Black Friday, not New Year's?" Nolan says
"That's right, Officer Nolan. Breakups and broken hearts. Jealousy and revenge. All make for a perfect storm of heightened emotion and dangerous situations. Hell, sometimes violence can find you minding your own business at dinner." Grey tells him
"Sir, again, I can't tell you how sorry I am." Nolan said
"I'm not the one that needs the apologies, Officer Nolan." Grey tells him
"Yes, sir. Please apologize to your wife for me. If you'd like me to make you another reservation -" Nolan was saying until Grey cut him off
"I traded shifts for last night off. The night you ruined." Grey said
"Yes, sir." Nolan then said
"Uh, sir? I don't see my T. O." Chen tells him
"Officer Bradford's taken a personal day." Grey tells her
"You're kidding. Tim hasn't taken a personal day in his entire life." I tell him
"Be that as it may, he's off today. So, Chen, you'll be assigned to the front desk. All right. That's it. Everybody be safe out there. But, Officer Lopez I want to talk to you." Grey says and everyone heads to the armory
Me and Angela looked at each other then back at Grey to signal which one he was talking about.
"Sorry. Officer Sophia Lopez, may I speak with you real quick?" Grey asks and I nod my head and Angela left
"Yes sir?" I ask
"I wanted to ask, after Jackson is officially an officer and not a rookie, would you maybe like to go back to being a detective?" Grey asks and I sigh
"I mean that would be nice since I could wear normal clothes again. Uh, can I tell you my answer sometime this week it may take me a little time to decide to become a detective again." I tell him
"Well, if you want to be a detective again, I will make sure to tell the captain as soon as you tell me. But after Jackson is no longer a rookie, you have two weeks when Jackson is a full time officer to decide if you want to be a detective, alright?" Grey asks
"Yes sir." I tell him then leave to the armory and see the rookies talking about something and I just walk up to the counter
"Shouldn't you be at the front desk, Boot?" I ask Chen
"Oh. Right. Sorry. Muscle memory." She says then looks to the person in charge of the armory and says "I don't need the gear today, so - sorry."
"Ladies!" Nolan hastily said then said "Officers, I'm having a little get-together tonight. Love if you could join."
"Pass." I say immediately
"Officer Bishop?" Nolan asks
"Don't even bother with her." I tell him
"You have plans?" Nolan asks her
"Yes" Talia said
"No." I tell him while looking at Talia
"Don't start." Talia tells me then walks away but I follow her
"Talia." I say
"What comes after awkward?" Nolan asks
"That." West tells him
Some time later, me and West are taking our coffees back to our shop.
"So you going out with Wesley tonight?" West asks me
"Nope." I tell him popping the "p"
"Why not?" West asks again
"You're getting a little familiar, Officer West. We're not friends, we're friendly. You do understand the difference." I tell him
"Yes, ma'am. Your personal life is personal." West says
"Exactly. So, uh, he did get me a gift. He didn't think I saw it, but I did. Does that mean I need to get him something?" I ask
"I mean, do you want to get him something?" He asks me
"Lord, no. Men are impossible to shop for. Who needs the pressure?" I tell him in a questioning tone
A man comes running down the sidewalk wearing nothing but a mask, chased by another man wielding a golf club.
"You better run! You better run!" The golf club man yells
"Good God. Men should never run naked." I tell West
"I'll kill you!" The golf club man yells again
"Looks like Valentine's Day is starting early." West sats
"You're tackling the naked one!" I tell him running after them
Me and West are back at the station taking the formerly naked man to the holding cells.
"Indecent exposure?! Her husband was chasing me. What was I supposed to do?" The person says
"Not sleep with his wife?" I tell him when I see Wesley being brought in so I walk over to him and the officer and ask "Hey, what happened?"
"I barely got into my opening statement with Judge Bollard. He kept interrupting me. Words were exchanged. He held me in contempt." Wesley said
"I'll take him off your hands and book him." I tell the officer in charge of Wesley
"Fine by me." The officer said
"Ooh, I recently had a dream like this." I tell Wesley smiling
"Oh, yeah?" Wesley asks
"Uh-huh." I respond
I am sitting across from Wesley, grinning, when West decide's to come in.
"I'm, uh, I'm gonna go get a snack." West says then leaves
"All right, counselor. I'm gonna need you to empty your pockets." I tell Wesley still with my grin
"Uh-huh." Wesley said
"And take off your tie and your shoes and socks. Do it nice and slow for me." I tell him
"You're enjoying this way too much." Wesley said
"Uh-huh. So what exactly did you say to piss off the judge?" I ask
"I was listing cases of extreme use of force by law enforcement trying to set precedent." Wesley says
"Mm, let me guess, he ruled those cases were immaterial." I tell him
"Over and over. It was relevant. By the time my client got to booking, his arm was broken." Wesley said
"Was he resisting arrest?" I ask
"Even if he was, that doesn't give you permission to hurt him like that." Wesley said
"Give me permission?" I ask
"No, I didn't - I didn't mean it like that." He said
"Hey! I changed my mind. You book this guy. I got work to do." I said to the other officer and I make a beeline out of the holding area
"Sophia, I didn't mean that." Wesley said
"Let's go. Okay." The officer said
Me and West are in the hospital and we come up to the intake desk when the Nurse we met before is there.
"Excuse me. You have an assault victim. We're here to take his statement." I said
"Room 524, back and to the left." The gino lady said
"Thank you." I told her
"Have I, um, seen you hiking at Runyon Canyon?" West asks
"Quite possibly. But I don't remember seeing you." Gino answered
"I mean, I look different out of uniform." West tells her
"Yeah. I bet you do." The gino lady said
"Come on." I say to West grinning
"What?" West asks after seeing my grin
West and I enter a room where an older man is resting.
"Good afternoon, sir. I'm Officer Lopez. This is Officer West. We understand you were attacked." I tell him
"That's what they keep telling me." Kevin Scott says
"Doctor said your memory's a little fuzzy." West says
"Is that the kind way of bringing up my dementia?" Scott asks
"No. Uh, that's not what I meant. You were hit on the head when you were attacked. Doctor said you might have a concussion." West tells him
"Lucky me. I get dementia and a concussion." Scott tells us
"Can you tell us what you do remember?" I ask him
"No, not really. No. I know I was downtown. Don't remember why. Uh there was this guy running. He slammed into me and he knocked me down, and I think he hit me, too. I have these bruises." Scott tells us
"Did you get a look at him?" I ask
"Whether I did or not, I don't remember. I'm so sorry. I wish I could be more helpful." Scott tells me
"Thank you." I tell him and leave
I was back at the station in the holding area and stopped to talk to Wesley.
"I spoke to the court clerk. The judge is still not ready to let you go. You must have really pissed him off." I tell him
"Yeah, I seem to have that effect on people. Look, I'm sorry, okay? I get a little carried away sometimes, but I know you're a good cop." Wesley says
"Most of us are." I tell him smiling
"Agreed." Wesley said
"You get out early enough, I'll let you take me out to dinner. I don't need anything fancy." I tell him in a soft voice
"Uh you know, I already made plans. I thought I couldn't see you, but, um, I could cancel." He tells me
"No, it's it's not a big deal. I gotta get back out there." I tell him slightly hurt
"Okay." He says
I go back to the booking desk and look at the clipboard and stop to think, then I go to the lockers in rows behind the desk. I open one and take a bag of personal effects and pull out a phone from, Wesleys bag. When I look at it I see on the calender that it has Dinner With Melanie for the evening and I put it back in the bag and put the bag away.
When I get to the bullpen I see West at a desk , looking at Mr. Scotts's case.
"Ready to go?" I ask him
"Yeah. Just looking for a next of kin for Mr. Scott. Guy led quite a life. Lived all over but was an only child." West says then sighs and then says "Never married." then when I sigh he asks "You okay?"
"Yeah. Good thing I didn't get him a gift." I tell West
"Who? Wesley? Why?" West asks
"I think I misread our relationship." I tell him when Nell from dispatch comes to my desk
"Hey, just the two I was looking for. So, something weird came up in connection to the dispatch call that I sent you on earlier. The old guy who was attacked?" Nell asks
"What about him?" I ask
"Well, I was compiling a list of the day's dispatches - totally not my favorite part of the job, by the way - and something just popped out at me. There was an attempted abduction right by where your attack victim was found. The woman fought off her attacker, and the guy just fled." Nell says
"Could be that's who slammed into Mr. Scott." I say
"Did the woman leave a description of the guy?" West asks Nell
"She just said he was Caucasian male, strong." Nell says
"Thanks, Nell." I tell Nell
"Sure." She says then walks away
"And our only other potential witness has dementia, can't remember what the guy looked like." West says
"Let's go try and jog his memory." I say and we leave to head to the hospital to get to Scott's room quick

When we get to the hospital, we see Scott retrieving his clothes as if he was about to get dressed when me and West enter his room.
"Hey. What are you doing out of bed?" West asks Scott
"I need to go home. My mother made dinner." Scott said
"Sir, do you know where you are?" I ask him
"Yeah. Yeah. I'm in the hospital. I just had my appendix out." Scott said
"I'm guessing that was a long time ago. Okay, let's get you back in bed." I say
West spots a GINO walking down the hall and asks the GINO "Hey, uh, can you help us?"
"Sure. Mr. Scott, you need to get back in bed. Doctor's orders, okay?" The GINO said
"Oh. Okay." Scott said
"Here you go." The GINO said after tucking Scott back in
"Uh, do we need to come back?" West asks
"Oh, no. No. He's okay. Aren't you, Mr. Scott?" The GINO asks
"Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah." Scott says
"Thank you." West and I say
"No worries." The Gino says then leaves
"I'm Officer Lopez. Do you remember me from earlier?" I ask
"Uh-huh, I think so." Scott said
"You're in the hospital because you were assaulted." I tell him
"Uh, right, right, right, right, right. Yeah, that's why my head hurts?" Scott asks
"Exactly." I say
"We, uh, think the person who assaulted you attacked someone else beforehand. That you were in the wrong place at the wrong time." West says
"Do you remember being assaulted earlier today?" I ask Scott
"Yeah. I remember being knocked down. And And And I think he hit me, too, 'cause I -" Scott was saying when West interrupted him
"Yeah, you said that. Is there, um, anything else you can tell us about him?" West asks him
"He was tall. He was white. Um, his hair was long, I think. I'm sorry. That's all I got." Scott says
"It's okay. That's more than we had before. Try and get some rest." I tell him
"Is she all right? The woman he attacked?" Scott asks
"From what I hear, yes." West says
"That's good. That's good." Scott says
Me and West leave the room and walk down the corridor.
"Son of a bitch." I say
"What?" West asks
"He asked if she was all right, but you never said the other victim was a woman. He's the one who attacked her." I tell him
"He's got dementia. It was diagnosed three years ago." West says
"Doesn't mean he couldn't have tried to abduct that woman. He hits his head as he's escaping. Someone finds him disoriented, takes him to the hospital." I tell him
"And he's too out of it to object. Just has to play along. Makes up a story about getting attacked." West says
"Or maybe he really did forget about it, and he's just trying to fill in the blanks in his memory." I add
"All right, so what do we do?" West asks
"I'm going back to the station to mobilize Major Crimes. They'll get a warrant for his DNA and check it against the woman who was attacked. You stay here and make sure he doesn't go anywhere." I tell him
"Do you really think he could've done it? I mean, he seems so lost." West asks
"Getting sick doesn't make you a saint." I tell him

In the reception area I saw Lucy and John talking so I went up to them and John saw me.
"It's only as weird as we let it be. Besides, I'm sure other people will meet us there. Ah! Officer Lopez, have you reconsidered about joining us this evening?" John asks
"No chance. We're still working a case." I tell him
"Which means Jackson won't be there." Lucy says
"It's going to be fun. Not weird. Fun." John says
"Who are the flowers for?" I ask after seeing a vase of flowers on the front desk
"Oh, they came in for Talia." Lucy said
"From who?" John asks
"None of your business." Me and Lucy say
"That's none of my business." John says hastily
"Should I go find her?" Lucy asks
"No, I'll do it." I tell her
"Fun." John says then I go to find Talia

Eventually I find Talia in the break room.
I bring the flowers in and set the vase on a table.
"These came for you." I tell her
"Okay, thanks." She says
"They look expensive." I say looking at the flowers then back to her
"What's your point?" Talia asks
"I thought you broke things off with him." I tell her
"It's complicated." She says
"He went back to his wife?" I ask
"Yes." She says
"Then it's simple. He's married, not separated. And you're done." I tell her
Andersen steps into the break room, folder in hand.
"Officer Lopez, detectives looked into your hospital vic." She says
"Am I right about him trying to abduct that woman?" I ask
"It's much bigger than that. When they looked into his background, they got hits on several attacks on similar women spanning over three decades. Over a dozen unsolved cases, some of them homicides. I think you may have found a serial killer." She says
"Was the dementia just a cover?" I ask
"Not necessarily. He went dormant after his first diagnosis." She says
"So what? He, like, forgot he liked to kill women?" I ask
"I don't know. It's possible today was a "good memory" day where he got his taste back. FBI is sending somebody from Quantico. Major Crimes is sending a mobilizing team to question him tonight. You sure you got him squared away?" She asks
"Yes, Officer West is with him." I tell her
"Go make sure." She says and I leave to go back to the hospital

West is standing guard outside Mr. Scott's room. His cell lights up with a text from me: "Detectives think Kevin's a serial killer. Don't let him out of your sight. I'm on my way." West texts back: "Copy." and looks into the room, where Scott smiles and gives him a wave from his bed. Someone in the hallway drops a tray, distracting West, and when he looks back into the room, Scott is not in his bed.

Soon, I make it to th hospital and run to scott's room but when I enter Scott's room I find West on the floor regaining consciousness while the GINO is lying nearby stripped to his underwear.
"Where's Kevin?!" I ask
"I don't know." West says while groaning
"Are you okay?" I ask West
"He has my weapon." West says
"Stay here and make sure he's all right." I said to the GINO then started talking through my walkie "7-Adam-07, officer attacked at Shaw Memorial, suspect is dressed in green scrubs, armed, send backup."
I go out into the hallway and spot Scott walking casually away with a folder in his arm.
"Kevin! Stop! Police!" I say and start to chase after him
Scott starts to run, knocking over people on his way down the hall to the emergency exit.
"Stop! Freeze!" I yell
I chased him down the stairs and knocked him down on the landing. He loses his gun and we fight hand-to-hand until I get an elbow shot to his middle and he goes down. I cuffed his hands behind his back.
"Stop resisting. It's over. You're under arrest." I tell him

Back in the holding area of the station I am in my street clothes, unlocking the cell where Wesley was waiting.
"Judge says you can go." I tell him
"About time." He says
"You should still be able to make your date with Melanie." I tell him looking down
"How exactly did you know about that? Ah. Let me guess. You performed an illegal search of my phone." He says
"I did it as a civilian, not in conjunction with a case, so it's not an illegal search." I tell him
"Does that make it better?" He asks
"No." I say
"Melanie is my stepmom. My dad died last year. She was gonna be alone, so I'm taking her out to dinner." He says
"Oh. I really screwed that up, didn't I?" I ask with a frown
"Yep." He says and leaves

I am back at the apartment me and Angela live in with tears in my eyes.
"Hey I know that it is late, but do you think that we can order food?" Angela asks and looks up at me seeing me crying
"Oh sis, what happened?" She asks coming over to me and hugging me
" I messed things up with Wesley." I tell her
"How?" She asks
"I looked through his phone to see what he was doing today and I saw that he was having dinner with someone named Melanie and I thought he was cheating on me but its his step mom." I tell her
"Do you want me to call him and tell him to come here after that dinner?" She asks me
"No. I have to make it right to him on my own, probably tell him about James." I say and Angela looks at me surprised
"Why tell him about James?" She asks still surprised
"So that he knows that I am hesitant when it comes to my love life." I tell her
"Well, when you and Wesley have figured this out definitely tell him when you are apologizing to him." She says
"I will now I am going to bed I am tired." I tell her and go to my room falling asleep
