Chapter 35: Clean Cut

The Rookie // Wesley Evers FanficWords: 10984

West and I left the station and we pulled a man over a man, in a car, in a residential neighborhood.

"Hey, hey! My dad's coming down for the ceremony." West tells me happy

"It's not a ceremony. It's a photo op with the Deputy Chief." I tell him

"All right, still, it's a big deal to me. I'm proud of this." West tells me while were walking to the car

"You should be." I tell him then look at the driver "You know you were texting while driving, sir?" I ask him

"Oh, I just looked down at my map for a second while I was stopped at a red light." The man says

""Yo, running late. Smiley face, smiley face, boat."" West says reading off the dude's phone

"Yeah, okay, the boat was a typo." The dude says

"Yeah, it's so hard to focus on texting while you're driving." West tells him

"License and registration, please." I tell the man

While the man was getting his license and registration, West noticed that part of the car's dashboard looked like it had been wrenched off and not replaced properly.

"Hey, what's, uh, what's going on with your dashboard, there?" West asks Reed

"Nothing. Came that way." Reed tells him

"I doubt it." West says then looks at me

"Looks like Trevor's on searchable probation for 11-300." I say to West with a smile on my face

"Narcotics." West says

"Sir, step out of the vehicle. Today. Step to the back of the vehicle. Arms on the trunk lid. Spread your legs." I tell Trevor and he complies while West tries to get whatever is behind the dash

"There's a packaged powder in here. It's wedged up in there, though. At least a kilo." West tells me then I look at Trevor

"Surprise, surprise. Sir, give me your hands." I tell Reed and he complies

"Can't get it out." West says still trying to get it out

"Relax. They'll tear it apart, find out whatever it is." I tell him while holding Trevor who was handcuffed

"Uh-" West says when a smile cloud of white powder puffs out of the dash, into his face causing him to straighten up while blinking

"You okay? You got a little something on your shirt." I tell him seeing the white powder residue on his shirt not thinking anything of it

"Thanks." West says then sneezes

"Bless you." I tell him and put Trevor in the back while we head back to the station

****

After getting to the station with Trevor Reed, we were in the filing room, waiting for West to finish the arrest report.

"Arrest report done." West tells me sounding very eager

"Eager to get back out there, are you West?" I ask him

"Oh, I do have to add the CHP 180. 180. That is so weird. It's like a full turn. He did a 180. Wow. I wonder if that was a coincidence or something that -" He continues after pausing but I interrupt him

"Jackson?" I ask him very confused

"Yeah?" West looks at me

"What are you talking about?" I ask him

"Paperwork. Like, uh, formats. The data, you know? Have you ever really sat and thought about how much data we actually collect? Like, terabytes and terabytes of data our whole lives. Actually, we carry more data on our phone than they ever processed on Apollo 11. Fact." West said babbling

"Why don't you come with me?" I ask feeling like that white powder had affected him

"Where?" West asks while I drag him to a interrogation room

"Come on." I just tell him

"Why are you so rough?" West asks me

"Come on." I just tell him still dragging him

"Occupied. It's like an airplane bathroom." West says

"Let's go in here." I say and pull him into an interrogation room and shut the door while pulling out a flashlight to examine his eyes

"Hey, what are you doing?" West asks me

"Look to the left." I tell him

"Okay, look, you don't understand. That kind of computing power and all our data, we are just a few years away from being able to predict crime." West says and I give him a stern look

"Look to the left." I tell him once again

"Okay." West says and looks to the left

"Now. Now right. It's like a couple flying saucers in there." I say when he looked to the right and West goes over to peer at himself through the one-way mirror

"What? Oh, my gosh. I'm high. On drugs. I did drugs." West says

"Not on purpose." I tell him trying to calm him down

"No, no, I-I don't do drugs. I've never done drugs before." West tells me

"Shocker." I tell him

"7-Adam-07, go to Channel 2." Grey said on the radio

"Oh, God. Grey knows. He knows." West says

"No, he doesn't, but he will if you don't play it cool. What is it, Sarge?" I asks into the radio after talking to West

"You got Officer West with you?" Grey asks

"Yes, sir." I tell him

"I'm here. Sorry." West says after announcing his presence

"You'll be receiving the special commendation alone." Grey tells him

"Uh, from the Deputy Chief. Right." West says brightly

"Why? What happened with Tim?" I asked

"He's been involved in an incident. He won't be attending." Grey says

"Copy that." I say and switch off the radio

"I'm dead. It's over. I Is this what it feels like to be dead? It's not - It's not bad." West says

"Look. Don't panic. We'll get through this." I tell him

"Look, my dad will be there, with the Deputy Chief." West says

"Give me your weapon." I tell him

"What? Why?" West asks handing it over to me and I remove the ammunition and hand him back his gun that is now empty

"'Cause you can't have a gun if you're high. We're going to the hospital, get your blood tested. Keep your eyes forward as we leave the station, and don't talk to anyone. (as he stares) You can talk to me." I tell him as he stares at me

"Copy that." West says

"Come on." I tell him and we leave for Shaw Memorial

****

"What this place really needs it needs some calming music. You know, like, uh, monks chanting or, uh, those whale songs. That would be nice." West says

"Um, he got some powder on his face," I tell Sawyer

"Mm-hmm." Sawyer says

"white powder, and -" I continue saying but Sawyer interrupts me

"You need to find out what drug he was exposed to." Sawyer tells me

"The guy we stopped had priors for PCP." I tell her

"PCP is fat-soluble. I mean, that stays in your system for a lifetime." Sawyer says

"Exactly. And if you can hallucinate at any time, you can't carry a gun. It's an automatic retirement. He'll be off the force." I tell her knowing neither of us want that

"I'll rush the tests." Sawyer says

"Wait, you don't have to report this, right?" I ask her

"I'm precluded by HIPAA laws from discussing this with anyone." She tells me

"Good, if the test comes back positive, I'll fill out an exposure form, but, if it's nothing serious, I want to keep it quiet." I tell her and she nods and goes to run the test

When I turn around I see that West has wandered off and encountered Tim coming down the hallway.

"Imagine being able to stop crime before it happens. Mind-blowing concept that I've actually sat with for a few days. I pitched it -" West starts saying but i interrupt him

"Hey! What are you doing here?" I ask Tim

"Nothing. I'm not following. What were you saying?" He says to me then to West after turning to him

"Nothing. Just some sci-fi movie he won't stop talking about. Go wait by the elevator. Are you okay? What happened?" I ask after telling West where to go

"I rear-ended a citizen." Tim says

"Bad?" I ask

"She's in the ER. I don't know how it happened. It just -" Tim starts saying

I see West about to get in the elevator so I run to go after him.

"I got to go." I yell to Tim while trying to get to the elevator before it went down

****

"Stay here until I come back." I tell West while we are in a room at the station

"If I could just talk to the IT guys -" West starts saying but I shut him up

"No. No talking to anyone." I tell him

"Well, look, maybe I am high, but these are still solid ideas. Okay. I'm cool. I will stay here, and I will not talk to anyone." He says after seeing my very very serious look

"Great." I tell him

I leave West alone not realizing he started talking to himself.

"Get it together. You're gonna be okay. Just slow down and, uh take a breath. What if the copier could copy your thoughts?" West said

Somehow, someway, West managed to get his head under the copier lid and pushed the start button.

****

West is talking to Nell when I get back, in the hallway.

"Jackson?" I ask him

"And you'd be at the nexus of it all dispatching units to pre-crimes, and you'd use the copier to help you." West says

"Hmm." Nell says trying to follow what Jackson is saying

"Jackson! We're supposed to be handling calls." I tell him

"Okay. Yeah. We were just - Well, we're just -" West was saying when I interrupted him

"Let's go now." I tell him dragging him

West scoots down the hall to wait by the doorway.

"Um, Officer Lopez? Just one quick thing?" Nell says to me

"Sure. What's up?" I ask

"It's about Officer West." Nell says and I get very nervous

"Yeah? What about him?" I ask worried

"I just wanted to say that he is such... an insightful thinker. I mean, did you know he was full of ideas?" Nell asks

"I did not. He's usually much quieter." I tell him laughing a little

"Hmm." Nell says

"Nice to see you, Nell." I tell Nell and head back to Jackson

"Mm-hmm." Nell says and me and Jackson left Nell behind

****

West and I sit at a table and West looks hung over.

"How are you feeling?" I ask him

"My head is pounding, and my throat's on fire." West says

"Sounds like you're coming down off whatever it was." I tell him

Suddenly, Grace Sawyer is walking past the open door and sees us and comes in to talk.

"Hey. I was, uh, looking for Nolan. Since I'm running into you-" Sawyer starts to say

"Not PCP. Please, not PCP." West says interrupting her and praying for it not to be PCP

"It wasn't PCP." Sawyer tells him

"Yes!" West exclaims

"Or much of anything, really. It was horse vitamins and caffeine." Sawyer says

"It was bunk? But he's been high as a kite all day." I say to her

"An allergic reaction can mimic some of those symptoms. And from there, the power of suggestion did the rest." Sawyer tells me

****

Tim and Jackson are posing with their plaques while Chen and I are taking pictures of them in their police uniforms and the plaques they earned then I looked over Chen shoulders to see and tell her when to take the photo.

"Get it." I say and Chen takes the photo

"All right. Okay. Yeah. That's enough." Tim tells us

"I told you, I need to get pics for Rachel." Chen tells him

"Come on, Boot. Buy me a beer." I tell West and we go over to one of the food trucks

"Surprise." We hear Sawyer

"Happy birthday!" We all yell

"You know, um - a year ago, I never would have believed this would be my life. I mean, new beginnings are rare, and rewarding ones, even more so. And here I am, surrounded by the best people I've ever known. And Lopez. Just- That's just jokes. To us." Nolan says

"Cheers! Cheers. Cheers. Cheers." We all say

"You want to cheer somebody? All right." West says and then Nolan shakes the box while I walk away to talk to someone else
