Chapter four
"Bagwan akal baant rahe the tab kidhar the aap?"
⧠P R E E T â§
"Hiiiiiii!" I chirped aloud to hide my nervousness after noticing the door opening.
"Hey, wifey." He replied while moving aside and letting me in. I looked around properly, my gaze falling on every detail of this house because I had to live in it for a while.
If he allows me to.
Right now most of the stuff wasn't adjusted so it felt more empty. The cream-coloured walls made the house look more spacious and huge. A few cartons and suitcases were lying around.
"Here." My trance broke and I raised my eyes which fell on him holding a glass of water in his hand.
God bless him.
I took a sip of the water and upon gulping it I made a face. The water tasted so bad. I am that person who can not drink tap water, I need purified Auqagaurd's water. Even any other type of water purifier ruins the taste of water for me.
And the water here is among the worst.
I decided not to be a complaining kid and drank the water, with every sip I thought of my house's water thinking maybe it'd help but it didn't.
"Thank you," I mumbled with a smile. He went back to keep the empty glass inside the kitchen. In the meanwhile, I looked around for a second. There was no couch, maybe because he shifted here today itself.
Finding nothing to sit on, I looked at the largest carton among them all and sat on it. It was a matter of a few seconds that I dipped inside and fell on the carton with a thud.
I heard quick footsteps and while I was lying inside the empty carton, Deven was laughing his ass off in front of me. His loud laughter echoing the whole room.
Why am I clumsy as fuck? I trip on even surfaces, hit my hands while walking, drop everything and keep falling on my butt every day. Every day I get a new mark on my body which just appears randomly.
"How did you even end up there?" He kept laughing instead of helping me get up. I decided to help myself instead of crying about my fate. Watching me struggle, Deven forwarded his hand which I accepted and after the next two seconds, I was standing on the mattress holding my back.
It was already like a 60-year-old woman's back and now it hurts as well.
"I didn't know it was empty and I sat on it," I replied turning behind and glaring at the carton as if he understood it. Hearing some chuckles I glared at Deven who just covered his laugh.
His eyes show how he's still laughing.
"Stop." I firmly said but he ignored me. I hit his arm this time demanding him to stop laughing at me.
"Okay okay. What was so important?" I called him asking for his address a while ago and told him there was something important I needed to tell him.
I just came here to have a quick scan of his apartment. And it's nice, spacious, well furnished, large. I can survive here.
Except for the fact that the water tastes bad. Very bad.
"I just came to have a look at your house." which I'm going to capture for a few days.
Again, if he allows.
"Come on, there's more to it. Spill it." He said folding his arms below his chest and leaning on the wall. That action made me gasp audibly.
It was hot for no reason. I shook my head snapping out of it.
"Where was I?" I asked him forgetting the topic for a second. I added the very next second. "Yeah, yeah. There is more to it but answer this first, do you have a girlfriend?"
"Nope." He replied and I nodded. The next words coming out of his mouth made me frown. "A fiancée"
"Hein, Sachi?" I asked and he nodded.
[Oh, really?]
The plan flops then. I won't stay with a committed man. His fiancee won't like it-
Why do I not know about this?
I narrowed my eyes at him without speaking much, just looking at him in suspicion.
"What?" He asked.
"Why do I not know about your engagement? It's not like you won't invite my brother or Ananya Bhabhi. Both of them are your best friends." He paused for a second and later sighed.
My real brother, Abhinav and my cousin's brother Sahil's wife, Ananya and Deven used to work together in the same company and that is how they became friends. Deven was already my brother's good friend and after Ananya Bhabhi joined the company, they became best friends as well.
"They don't know. It's a long story." He replied, sadly.
Maybe he's not lying. Not everyone lies about engagement and marriage like you Preet.
You are special.
"Oh. Okay then. I must go back, I'll think of something else. Thank you, Sorry. And anyway, the water here wasn't nice so it gives me another reason to not stay here. I'll tell Aniketh the truth-" I kept babbling until he walked towards me and kept his hand on my mouth covering it.
His hand is so big-
"You want to stay here?" He asked and I shook my head. I wanted to say something but his large hand covering my mouth stopped me from.
I bite him if he doesn't remove his hand.
Or maybe I can just remove his hand with my other hand. No violence involved. Easy peasy.
"Not after knowing that you have a fiancee." I chose the latter option and replied.
Peace over violence.
"I don't. I was joking." He replied and I glared at him.
"Mazak karne ka time hai yeh?" I asked sarcastically and he passed a half shrug.
[Is this the right time to joke?]
"Woh chodo. Koi chakkar chal Raha hai?" I asked him raising my one eyebrow. I learned this in my teenage by some reel which said to hold one eyebrow and try raising the other one for some days and you'll learn. It failed but I automatically could do that after some months.
[Leave that. Do you have any affair going on?]
"Nope." He replied bluntly.
"Okay. Situationship or some bullshit like that?" I asked and he looked confused.
"Ye bachkani harkate nahi karta main." I rolled my eyes.
[I don't do this childish stuff.]
"What's your age?"
"Thirty-one." My eyes widened at his statement and my mouth hung open. He is that old?
"Etne zyada buddhe ho aap?" He narrowed his eyes and glared at my statement.
[You are that old?]
"Aap hongi buddhi, mai nahi." He replied.
[You are old, I'm not.]
"Jao jao. Sirf pachis ki hu main toh." I flipped my hair behind in arrogance. He showed me a thumbs up wanting to end the conversation.
[I'm only twenty-five.]
Ye Ananya bhabhi ne sabko adat laga di hai ye karne ki.
She is the one who started showing thumbs up whenever she was fed up and now everyone does that because of her.
"Back to the topic. You don't have any situations, any girlfriend or any fiancee-" he cut me off.
"I have a wife." He winked and I rolled my eyes.
"And she wants to be your roommate. So will you be her roommate?"
"So romantic!" A smile appeared on his face and he waved his hand in the air after letting out a fake hahaha.
Such a drama queen this man is.
"Answer me," I demanded.
"Pura plan batao fir sochta hu." I nodded and looked around, finding something on which I could sit. Without falling.
[Tell me everything about your plan first then I'll decide.]
"Bhai aap baithte kidhar ho yaha." He hit his hand on his forehead.
[Bro, where do you even sit here?]
"Ek aur baar bhai bolo aur tumhare Bhai ko bata dunga ye sab main." He threatened me by showing his index finger and taking a step towards me.
That was not a brotherly wala bhai.
"Bagwan akal baant rahe the tab kidhar the aap?" I took a step forward as well.
[Where were you when god was giving everyone a brain?]
"Aapke sath jhooti shaadi ka natak kar raha tha." I had no reply to this so I did my usual, rolled my eyes.
[I was with you acting like your husband.]
"Let's sit in the room." I diverted the topic and he mimicked my sentence in a weird voice. I kept looking at him with my lips in a thin line.
He is overall nice but at times he becomes irritating.
"Let's go."
Deven- 0, Preet-1
We walked to a room and I sat on the bed. Finally, my legs were hurting so much. He came and sat beside me.
"So the plan is to continue acting, this time a little more convincingly, so that Aniketh believes us and goes back to India. And for that, I need to stay here and act like we are married in front of them but we'll just be like roommates. Easy, Right. So when should I move in?" I asked passing him a sheepish smile.
He mirrored my expression and asked me in a very sweet voice. "What will I get in return?"
My smile fell and I controlled my urge to roll my eyes.
"You'll get..." I thought about some offer to tempt him. "What do you want?"
"I'll think about it and tell you my answer. But why should I do this?" I pouted lightly.
"Umm, Would you not help a girl in crisis?" He shook his head. Mean.
"You're a gentleman, Deven. A man rare to find, like a diamond. You should become someone's knight in shining Armor, that will-" I have no idea what was I speaking to butter him.
"Okay, enough buttering. That's not working. Give me one reason why I should do this." Okay, my jar of patience is over.
"Mat karo yaar. Kuch aur soch lungi main. Waise bhi paani acha nahi tha yaha ka-" he interrupted my sentence.
[Don't do it. I'll think of something else. Anyways the water here wasn't nice-]
"Haath dhoke paani ke piche padd gayi ho aap."
[You are so hell-bent on complaining that the water is bad.]
"It is what it is." I shrugged. "And you have to do this for me because I have already introduced you as my husband. Now I can't go around changing husbands. And on top of that, you told me that I should drag you in this because it's not like you get a fake wife every day so, keep your word."
He did not look like he was convinced.
"I'll be a good girl, I won't disturb you at all. I'll not invade your privacy, I'll help you with all the chores, and I'll feed the bird you were talking about in the morning. Please." I showed him puppy eyes and he kept a finger on his chin pretending to be thinking about it.
He is going to say yes but he just needs to do some drama first.
"Okay, how can I say no to my wifey?" He passed a teasing smile.
"Fake wife." I corrected and he nodded. "So can I stay here at your apartment?"
"As long as you like wifey."
"You won't tell-" he cut me off.
"Abhinav, Ananya, Kirti, Sahil, Vivian or anyone. I got it." I nodded.
"Good job. But on a serious note, you won't have any problem, right? If you are uncomfortable then we'd rather not do this." I said.
"I'm always up for fun and chaos. Let's do this, wifey."
