The next day brought an unexpected downpour, the sound of rain tapping against the apartment windows like a steady rhythm. Lumine stretched lazily on the couch, her textbooks sprawled across the coffee table. She glanced at the gray sky outside and sighed.

“A perfect day to stay in,” she murmured, reaching out to pat Kuni, who was perched on the armrest beside her.

Kuni purred in response, though his indigo eyes flickered toward the rain outside. He remembered all too well the night she had found him—cold, wet, and shivering. The memory left a bitter taste in his mouth.

“Do you ever get bored, Kuni?” Lumine asked suddenly, breaking his train of thought. She tilted her head at him, her voice carrying a lighthearted tone. “All you do is lounge around all day while I work my butt off.”

Kuni narrowed his eyes at her, letting out a playful meow of protest.

“Okay, okay, you’re cute enough to get away with it,” she said, laughing softly.

Hours passed in peaceful quiet. Lumine alternated between studying and reading for leisure, while Kuni either dozed or watched her intently. The rain continued to fall, wrapping the apartment in a cozy, muted atmosphere.

Lumine eventually put down her pen and stretched, groaning. “I need a break. Want to watch something?”

She reached for the remote, and Kuni leapt onto her lap just as she settled into the cushions. The warmth of his fur against her legs was comforting, and she absentmindedly stroked his head as the TV flickered to life.

“You’re such a good listener, you know that?” she mused. “Sometimes I feel like you’re the only one who really gets me.”

Kuni froze for a moment, her words catching him off guard. He gazed up at her, his eyes softening. If only you knew how much I understand, Lumine.

As the hours wore on, the rain showed no signs of letting up. Lumine dozed off on the couch, her breathing slow and steady. Kuni stayed by her side, his head resting on her knee.

When he was sure she was deeply asleep, he slipped off her lap and padded to the window. With a deep breath, he shifted into his human form.

Standing by the window, he stared at the rain-soaked city. His thoughts swirled with questions and uncertainties. He clenched his fists. How long could he keep up this charade? How long before he slipped and revealed the truth to her?

A soft noise behind him made him turn sharply. Lumine stirred but didn’t wake, her face serene in her slumber. He sighed in relief, running a hand through his indigo hair.

---

“Why did it have to be her?” he whispered, his voice barely audible over the rain.

He didn’t understand how or why Lumine had become the center of his world, but he knew one thing for certain—she made him feel alive in a way he hadn’t felt in years.

The weight of his emotions threatened to overwhelm him, but he pushed them aside. Now wasn’t the time to indulge in selfish desires. Lumine needed him, and for now, that was enough.

Returning to his cat form, Kuni leapt back onto the couch and nestled beside her. When Lumine woke to the sound of the rain, she found Kuni curled up at her side, his presence as steady and reassuring as ever.

“You’re the best, Kuni,” she whispered, scratching behind his ears.

He purred in response, the warmth of her words wrapping around him like a promise.
