The air in the apartment was thick with unspoken words. Lumine sat cross-legged on the living room floor, her hand resting gently on Kuni’s soft fur. The revelation still swirled in her mind—her quiet, affectionate cat was no ordinary pet. He was Scaramouche, a mysterious figure who had somehow become part of her life.

Kuni—no, Scaramouche—lay still in his feline form, his indigo eyes watching her intently. He could see the mixture of confusion, curiosity, and hesitation in her gaze.

“I don’t even know where to start,” Lumine said, breaking the silence. Her voice was soft, unsure. “I mean, you’re—this—” She gestured vaguely at him. “How is this even possible? Are you… some kind of shapeshifter?”

Scaramouche flicked his tail in response but didn’t transform back into his human form. He wasn’t ready to face her as himself just yet.

Lumine sighed, leaning back on her hands. “You’re not going to change back and explain yourself, are you?” she asked, her tone slightly teasing despite the situation.

His ear twitched, and she let out a small laugh, more out of disbelief than amusement. “Figures.”

---

For the next few moments, Lumine sat in silence, staring at the little cat who had been her companion for weeks. “You know,” she said finally, “I should probably be mad at you for keeping this from me. But… I can’t.”

Kuni tilted his head, his eyes narrowing slightly in curiosity.

“You’ve been here for me,” Lumine continued. “When I was stressed, when I felt lonely… you were always there. Even if you were hiding who you really are, you still helped me.”

She reached out, her fingers brushing over his fur. “So, I guess… I’m okay with this. For now, at least.”

Scaramouche felt a wave of relief wash over him. He hadn’t expected her to accept him so quickly—or at all.

---

Lumine leaned her head back against the couch, staring at the ceiling. “But I still have so many questions,” she muttered. “Why are you here? Why did you stay with me? And why a cat, of all things?”

She glanced down at him, her eyes narrowing playfully. “You don’t exactly seem like the type to enjoy being cuddled and pampered.”

Scaramouche resisted the urge to roll his eyes. If only she knew how much effort it took to endure her constant petting.

“Well,” Lumine said, standing up and stretching, “I guess I’ll just have to wait for you to tell me everything. You will, right?”

Kuni let out a soft meow, neither confirming nor denying her words.

---

The night stretched on, and Lumine eventually decided to head back to bed. “Goodnight, Kuni—or should I call you Scaramouche?” she teased as she walked toward her room.

He followed her with his gaze, his heart conflicted. She had accepted his secret, but the more she understood about him, the more dangerous things could become.

As the door to her room clicked shut, Scaramouche padded over to the couch and curled up once more. For now, he would stay by her side, guarding her in silence.

But he knew the time was coming when he would have to face her as himself—not as a cat, but as Scaramouche, the one who had fallen for her without realizing it.
