The soft chirping of crickets filled the cold night air as the faint glow of the moon slipped through the tent's thin fabric. Lumine stirred in her sleeping bag, her eyelids fluttering open as a strange feeling crept over her. It wasn’t the cold air or the sound of distant owls—it was something else.

A presence.

Her eyes slowly adjusted to the darkness, and that’s when she saw him.

Scaramouche. In his human form. Leaning over her with his face inches from hers, his violet eyes gleaming with mischief and a familiar smug grin plastered across his sharp features.

“Good morning, princess,” he purred, voice low and dripping with sarcasm.

Lumine froze. Her sleep-addled brain took a solid three seconds to process what was happening. Scaramouche—her supposed cat—was now a fully grown, very human guy leaning over her while she lay wrapped in her sleeping bag like some helpless burrito.

“W-What the hell are you doing?!” she hissed in a whisper, glancing at Amber and Ayaka, who were both still fast asleep.

Scaramouche smirked wider. “Couldn’t sleep. Thought I’d pay you a visit.”

“At 3 AM?!” Lumine’s voice was still a whisper, though panic laced every syllable. “And in your human form?! Are you insane?!”

Scaramouche tilted his head, his indigo hair falling slightly into his eyes as he chuckled softly. “Relax, no one saw me. Besides…” He leaned a little closer, causing Lumine to shrink back into her sleeping bag. “…you’re the one who tied me to a tree stump.”

“Oh, so this is revenge?” Lumine deadpanned, her cheeks heating up as she realized how close he was.

Scaramouche hummed in response, his smugness growing by the second. “Call it… payback.”

Lumine squirmed, trying to free herself from her sleeping bag cocoon. “You’re unbelievable.”

“Thank you,” he replied casually, still hovering over her like some smug specter in the night.

“Can you move now?” Lumine glared at him.

Scaramouche shrugged. “I could… but where’s the fun in that?”

“Scaramouche—”

“Shh,” he interrupted, placing a finger over her lips. “Do you want to wake your little friends?”

Lumine froze again, her wide eyes staring at him while heat crawled up her neck.

Satisfied with her silence, Scaramouche finally leaned back and sat cross-legged beside her sleeping bag, his sharp eyes never leaving her face.

“You’re such a menace,” Lumine muttered, finally managing to unzip herself from the sleeping bag and sit up.

“And yet, you adore me,” he replied smoothly.

“I tolerate you,” she corrected with a sharp glare.

Scaramouche smirked. “Close enough.”

They sat in silence for a moment. The soft breathing of Amber and Ayaka filled the tent, and the glow from a distant campfire outside flickered faintly through the thin fabric.

“How did you even get in here without waking anyone up?” Lumine asked, arms crossed over her chest.

Scaramouche raised an eyebrow. “Do you think sneaking around is difficult for me?”

“Fair point…” she muttered under her breath.

There was another pause before Lumine sighed and rubbed her temples. “You can’t just transform like this whenever you feel like it, you know. Someone’s going to see you.”

“And whose fault would that be?” Scaramouche asked, his tone laced with mock innocence. “If you hadn’t ignored me all day, I wouldn’t have had to resort to… alternative measures.”

Lumine groaned softly. “You’re impossible.”

“Again, thank you,” he said, grinning smugly.

A Sudden Noise Outside

Their banter was cut short by the sound of footsteps outside the tent. Lumine froze, her eyes widening. Scaramouche, ever quick, shifted back into his cat form in the blink of an eye, his clothes vanishing into wisps of violet smoke as he landed softly on her lap.

“Lumine?” came Amber’s sleepy voice, her head poking out from her sleeping bag. “Did you hear something?”

“N-No, nothing!” Lumine said quickly, forcing a smile as she held Kuni tightly in her lap. “Probably just the wind.”

Amber yawned and flopped back into her sleeping bag without question.

Lumine let out a breath of relief and glared down at the indigo-eyed cat in her lap. Scaramouche was smirking—or as much as a cat could smirk—with his tail flicking lazily.

“You’re lucky you can switch forms so quickly,” she whispered sharply.

The cat just blinked at her slowly, his tail still flicking with amusement.

Morning Comes

The first rays of sunlight began creeping into the tent as birds chirped happily in the trees. Amber stretched and yawned while Ayaka delicately rubbed her eyes.

Lumine sat cross-legged with Kuni still in her lap, his tail wrapped neatly around his paws.

“Morning, girls!” Amber greeted cheerfully. “Sleep well?”

“Sure…” Lumine muttered, shooting a quick glare at the cat in her lap.

Ayaka tilted her head. “You look… tired, Lumine. Did something happen?”

Before Lumine could answer, Scaramouche let out a dramatic mrow, tilting his head up at Lumine as if butter wouldn’t melt in his mouth.

Amber gasped. “Kuni! Did you keep Lumine awake last night?!”

“Something like that,” Lumine muttered under her breath.

Amber picked Kuni up and cradled him in her arms. “Bad kitty!”

Scaramouche, in true Scaramouche fashion, simply purred smugly and nestled into Amber’s embrace.

Lumine stared at him in disbelief. This smug little—

Amber giggled. “Come on, let’s get breakfast before Venti starts causing chaos.”

As the three girls stepped out of the tent with Kuni still in Amber’s arms, Lumine caught the faintest glimmer in the cat’s violet eyes.

The silent message was clear: This isn’t over.

Lumine sighed deeply. It was going to be a long day.
