The moon hung high in the sky, casting a pale glow over the camping grounds. Most of the students were already asleep, the occasional rustle of tents and distant crackling of campfires the only sounds breaking the silence.
Inside Lumine's tent, however, sleep was far from her mind.
She lay on her side, her golden hair sprawled over her pillow, staring at the small indigo-furred cat curled up at her feet. Scaramoucheâs tail flicked lazily, but she could tell from the twitch of his ears that he was still awake.
âKuni,â she whispered softly.
The catâs tail flicked in response, but he didnât turn his head.
Lumine sighed, propping herself up on one elbow. âAre you still sulking because of what happened earlier?â
Scaramouche let out a quiet mrow, his violet eyes glancing at her briefly before looking away again.
âYou know, I canât exactly control who rescues me when Iâm drowning,â she continued with a soft laugh. âItâs not like I chose Kazuha to be my knight in shining armor.â
At this, Scaramouche let out an annoyed huff and turned his head away, tail lashing slightly.
Lumine grinned. âOh my god youâre so jealous.â
The cat froze. For a moment, the tent was completely silent. Then, without warning, a faint violet glow illuminated the small space.
Before Lumine could blink, Scaramouche was no longer a cat but instead in his human form, sitting cross-legged at the foot of her sleeping bag. His arms were crossed, and an irritated scowl marred his sharp features.
âWould you stop saying that?â he muttered, his voice low but sharp.
Lumine smirked, her golden eyes twinkling with amusement. âBut you are jealous.â
Scaramoucheâs eye twitched, but he said nothing.
She pushed herself into a sitting position, their faces now level with each other. âYouâre always acting so smug and untouchable, but when it comes to me, youâre such aââ
âA what?â Scaramouche cut her off, leaning closer.
âA clingy little cat,â Lumine finished, her grin widening.
Scaramoucheâs face turned slightly pink, and he immediately looked away, clicking his tongue. âTch. Donât flatter yourself.â
Lumine giggled, her laughter light in the stillness of the tent.
For a moment, they both sat there in silence, the air between them growing softer, almost fragile.
Scaramouche was the one to break it. âYou scared me today, you know.â
Lumine blinked, her smile fading slightly as she caught the seriousness in his tone.
âI couldnât do anything. I just sat there, useless, watching Kazuha pull you out of the water,â he admitted, his voice quieter now.
Lumineâs heart ached at the vulnerability in his voice. She reached out hesitantly, her hand brushing against his. âBut Iâm okay now, Kuni. You donât have to worry anymore.â
Scaramouche let out a soft sigh, his gaze dropping to their hands. âYouâre reckless, Lumine.â
She smiled faintly. âAnd yet, you still stick around.â
Their eyes met, and for a fleeting moment, it felt like time had stopped.
Scaramouche leaned closer, his face just inches from hers. âYeah⦠I do.â
Lumine felt her breath hitch, her heart thundering in her chest.
But before anything could happen, a loud HONK HONK echoed from the far end of the campsite, followed by Ventiâs unmistakable voice shouting, âWHO STOLE MY SWAN FLOATIE?!â
Both Lumine and Scaramouche froze.
ââ¦Itâs always him,â Scaramouche muttered, pinching the bridge of his nose.
Lumine burst into laughter, clutching her stomach as tears welled in her eyes.

The Next Morning
The golden light of dawn crept over the horizon, painting the sky with hues of orange and pink. Students were already bustling around, preparing breakfast and chatting loudly about the day's planned activities.
Lumine emerged from her tent, stretching her arms above her head with a yawn.
âKuniâ trotted beside her, his tail held high and proud as he glanced around the campsite.
Amber spotted them first, waving energetically. âLUMINE! KUNI! OVER HERE!â
They walked over to join Amber, Ayaka, and Kazuha, who were sitting on a picnic blanket enjoying breakfast.
âSleep well?â Kazuha asked with his usual calm smile.
âMostly,â Lumine replied, throwing a glance at Scaramouche, who was now delicately cleaning his paw with an air of superiority.
Amber pointed at the cat. âWhy does Kuni always look like heâs judging me?â
âBecause he is,â Lumine replied with a smirk.
Venti came stumbling over, dark circles under his eyes and his swan floatie tucked under one arm. âGood morning, peasants. I hope you all slept fantastically while I was out on a heroic quest to retrieve my stolen property.â
Albedo adjusted his glasses, his expression blank. âVenti, you were chasing a squirrel.â
âA feral squirrel, thank you very much!â Venti corrected with a dramatic wave of his arm.
The group erupted into laughter, with Lumine clutching Kuni to her chest as she tried to catch her breath.

A Quiet Moment
As the sun climbed higher in the sky, the students scattered to their various activities. Lumine found herself sitting on a log near the lake, staring out over the water.
Scaramouche, still in cat form, sat beside her, his tail flicking lazily.
âYou know,â Lumine began softly, âyou donât always have to act tough around me.â
Scaramouche blinked up at her, his violet eyes catching the sunlight.
âYou can just⦠be yourself, Kuni.â
For a moment, he simply stared at her. Then, with a soft sigh, he leaned against her side, his head resting against her arm.
Lumine smiled, reaching down to gently scratch behind his ears.
âSee? That wasnât so hard, was it?â she teased.
Scaramouche let out a soft purr, and for once, he didnât bother arguing back.
