The sun had barely risen, its golden rays stretching across the horizon as students hurried around the campsite, packing their belongings and stuffing sleeping bags into oversized backpacks. The air buzzed with chatter and faint yawns, a clear sign of exhaustion from the past few days.

Lumine sat on a wooden bench near the buses, Kuni (Scaramouche in cat form) curled up on her lap, his tail flicking lazily. Kazuha was leaning against the bench beside her, his calm demeanor contrasting with the bustling chaos around them.

“Feels bittersweet, doesn’t it?” Lumine said softly, scratching behind Kuni’s ears.

Kazuha nodded, his eyes gazing toward the lake in the distance. “It’s always like this after a trip—part of me wants to stay in this moment, and another part looks forward to the comfort of home.”

Amber jogged over, her oversized backpack bouncing with each step. “Lumine! Kazuha! The teachers are checking our tents one last time, and someone left a mountain of snacks in theirs!”

“Let me guess,” Lumine said with a smirk. “Venti?”

As if on cue, Venti appeared with Albedo trailing behind him. Venti had an armful of snacks—chips, candy bars, and half-empty soda bottles. “It wasn’t me! …Okay, maybe it was me, but who leaves good snacks behind? Tragic, truly tragic!”

Albedo adjusted his glasses and sighed. “You were supposed to clean up, Venti, not… hoard supplies like a chipmunk.”

Amber crossed her arms, pretending to be stern. “You’re lucky the teachers didn’t see this yet.”

Venti gave a sheepish grin and held out a chocolate bar. “Peace offering?”

Amber snatched it. “Accepted… this time.”

Boarding the Bus

The students began loading their bags onto the buses, teachers calling out names and double-checking headcounts. Ayaka approached Lumine with her neat backpack slung over her shoulders.

“Lumine, are you sitting with anyone on the bus?” Ayaka asked politely.

Lumine glanced at Kazuha, who gave her a small nod before heading off to help another group load their luggage. “I think I’ll be okay. I’ve got Kuni with me.”

Ayaka smiled. “Then I’ll sit nearby. I’d love to keep chatting with you.”

As they boarded the bus, Lumine settled into a window seat with Kuni curled up beside her. Ayaka took the seat across the aisle, and Amber plopped down behind them with Venti and Albedo in tow.

Venti immediately propped his feet up on Amber’s seat. “Alright, people! Who’s ready for Bus Karaoke?”

“No,” Albedo said flatly, adjusting his earbuds.

“Yes!” Amber countered, already opening her phone to find a karaoke playlist.

Lumine laughed softly as she glanced down at Kuni, who had buried his face in his paws. “You’re lucky you’re a cat right now. No one’s going to make you sing.”

Kuni flicked his tail, a silent agreement.

The Journey Back

The bus rolled down the winding roads, leaving the campsite behind. Some students were already dozing off, while others were deeply engrossed in conversation or scrolling through their phones.

Amber and Venti were harmonizing (badly) to an overly dramatic ballad, much to Albedo’s visible disapproval. Ayaka had fallen asleep against the window, her breathing soft and peaceful.

Lumine rested her head against the glass, watching the trees blur past as soft music played in her earbuds. Kuni, now snoozing beside her, twitched slightly in his sleep, his tiny paws stretching out.

Kazuha returned from wherever he had been helping, quietly sliding into the seat next to Lumine. He offered her a serene smile. “Mind if I sit here?”

Lumine shook her head. “Not at all. How was the luggage loading mission?”

“Successful, though Venti somehow misplaced an entire suitcase of snacks.”

From the back, Venti’s voice rang out. “They’ll turn up eventually!”

Kazuha chuckled, leaning back into his seat. The peaceful silence between him and Lumine was comforting, the hum of the bus engine filling the spaces where words weren’t needed.

Arrival Back at School

Hours later, the bus pulled into the school parking lot. The students piled out, stretching their stiff limbs and yawning as they grabbed their luggage.

Teachers gave final reminders about homework and upcoming events before dismissing everyone.

Lumine knelt down to pick up Kuni, who blinked sleepily up at her. “Back to reality, huh?” she whispered to him.

Amber appeared beside her with Ayaka and Venti close behind. “Well, that was one heck of a trip!”

“It was fun,” Ayaka agreed, smiling softly.

Venti stretched dramatically. “Agreed! I’m going to sleep like a rock tonight.”

Albedo joined the group, adjusting his bag. “You mean you’ll keep everyone awake with your snoring.”

“Hey!” Venti protested.

Kazuha stood a little apart from the group, his calm gaze settling on Lumine. “Well, it seems this chapter of our school life comes to a close.”

Lumine smiled. “Yeah… but I’m glad we all got to share it together.”

As the group began to scatter, heading toward their respective rides or walking home, Lumine lingered for a moment.

Kuni let out a soft purr as she scratched behind his ears.

“Let’s go home, Kuni.”

With the golden light of the sunset painting the sky, the school camping trip officially came to an end—but the memories they had made would stay with them for a long time.
