The sun hung low in the sky, casting golden rays over the shimmering river. Students were buzzing with excitement as they gathered on the riverbank, their chatter echoing through the trees. The teacher stood at the edge of the water, holding a megaphone to their mouth.
"Alright, everyone, listen up!" the teacher's voice crackled through the device, silencing the crowd. "Today, you're free to swim in the river. The water here is shallow, the current is gentle, and our staff is stationed nearby to ensure your safety. However, follow the rules-no roughhousing near deeper areas, and always stay within the marked boundaries."
Excited cheers erupted from the students, and many began racing to the river's edge to dip their toes in the cool water. Venti immediately tossed his sandals aside, flinging them behind him, and sprinted toward the river.
"See you in the splash zone!" Venti yelled over his shoulder before dramatically diving into the water with a loud splash.
Amber giggled as she turned to Lumine, who was standing slightly back with her arms crossed. "Lumine, aren't you coming?"
Lumine's smile was faint, her gaze fixed on the flowing water. Her stomach felt tight, and her throat dried as old memories resurfaced-cold water, her arms flailing, and the suffocating weight of sinking deeper.
Aether, noticing her hesitation, stepped beside her and spoke softly, "You don't have to force yourself if you're not comfortable."
Lumine shook her head. "No, it's fine. I'll... I'll try."
"It's shallow here," Aether assured her. "I'll hold your hand the whole time. You'll be okay, Lumi."
Taking a deep breath, Lumine nodded. Amber gave her an encouraging thumbs-up before she jogged off to join Ayaka, who was already standing ankle-deep in the water, letting the cool current flow over her feet.
Scaramouche, sitting on a nearby rock with his arms crossed and legs dangling, smirked at Lumine. "Scared of a little water, princess? Don't worry, I'll fish you out if you start sinking."
Lumine shot him a sharp glare. "You're the worst, you know that?"
He shrugged, a smirk still plastered across his face. "It's part of my charm."
Aether gave Scaramouche a warning look before gently guiding Lumine toward the water's edge. As her feet touched the cool surface, she flinched slightly but kept moving forward, clutching Aether's hand tightly.
The water was surprisingly gentle, and Aether led her step by step until they were both knee-deep. "See? It's not so bad."
Lumine let out a shaky breath but managed a small nod. "Yeah... it's okay."
Nearby, chaos was already unfolding. Venti was swimming around in circles, splashing anyone who got close. Amber and Ayaka had teamed up, creating a miniature wave aimed at Albedo, who was desperately trying to shield himself with his arms.
"Would you two stop this nonsense?" Albedo said through gritted teeth as water dripped from his glasses.
Amber grinned mischievously. "Nope!"
Ayaka giggled, her hands already cupped with water for another attack.
Kazuha, on the other hand, was floating peacefully on his back, his eyes closed as if meditating amidst the chaos.
Scaramouche finally stepped into the water, though he stuck close to the shallower edge. His smirk turned into mild irritation as he watched Venti cause chaos everywhere.
Aether turned to Lumine, grinning. "Everyone's having fun. You can relax a bit, you know?"
Lumine let out a small laugh. "Okay, okay, I'll try."
But peace was short-lived.
Amber splashed Ayaka, who retaliated immediately. Unfortunately, her splash sent water flying directly at Venti's face.
Venti froze, blinking water out of his eyes before dramatically gasping. "This means war!"
Without warning, he lunged toward Amber and Ayaka, sending large waves of water in their direction. Albedo, caught in the crossfire, let out an exhausted sigh.
"Why... am I even here?" he muttered.
Aether grinned mischievously and turned to Lumine. "You know... we shouldn't be left out of the chaos."
"Wait, Aether-"
Before Lumine could finish, Aether splashed her lightly, sending droplets of water onto her face.
"Oh, it's on, Aether!" Lumine retaliated, scooping water into her hands and throwing it at her brother.
The water fight escalated quickly. Amber and Ayaka had joined forces against Venti, who was dramatically flailing and shouting fake surrender lines. Albedo, now fully drenched, had stopped caring and simply stood waist-deep in water with a deadpan expression.
Scaramouche, who had been standing smugly on a rock nearby, was suddenly splashed by a rogue wave caused by Venti's antics. His smirk vanished instantly as he glared daggers at Venti.
"Oh, you are so dead."
Before Venti could react, Scaramouche leaped forward, grabbed him by the collar, and dunked him into the water.
Bubbles surfaced where Venti had disappeared, followed by his head popping back up with a loud gasp. "Scara-Scara, you traitor!"
Scaramouche rolled his eyes. "You deserved that."
On the other side of the river, Kazuha was calmly observing the chaos while floating on his back.
Amber, realizing Kazuha was untouched by the splashes, whispered something to Ayaka. The two nodded in agreement before launching synchronized splashes directly at him.
Kazuha blinked as water dripped down his face. "I was... at peace."
The riverbank echoed with laughter as more students joined in the water fight. At one point, Aether had tackled Albedo into the water, and Venti climbed onto a rock and declared himself the 'Splash King' before immediately slipping and falling back into the river.
The chaos eventually settled as the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting a warm orange glow over the water.
Lumine sat by the riverbank, her wet hair clinging to her face, but a genuine smile lit up her features. Aether plopped down beside her, his hair dripping and clothes soaked.
"You had fun, didn't you?" Aether nudged her shoulder lightly.
Lumine nodded. "Yeah... I really did."
Amber flopped down onto the grass nearby. "I am so tired... but that was the most fun I've had in forever."
Ayaka sat beside her, carefully wringing out her hair. "I'll admit, that was... chaotic, but enjoyable."
Scaramouche stood a few feet away, arms crossed, glaring faintly at Venti, who was sprawled face-down on the grass like a starfish.
"I've been betrayed by water itself," Venti muttered dramatically.
Kazuha, sitting cross-legged and watching the sunset, let out a peaceful sigh. "Sometimes, chaos brings the most memorable moments."
The teacher's voice called out from a distance, signaling everyone to return to camp. The group shared tired smiles and exchanged playful jabs as they walked back, their footsteps leaving wet imprints on the grass.
The day had been chaotic, loud, and exhausting-but it was undeniably one they'd remember forever.
