The soft glow of the morning sun streamed through the window, bathing the room in a warm, golden light. Lumine stirred from her sleep, her body still heavy with the remnants of her dreams. The scent of rain lingered in the air, mingling with the comforting aroma of fresh coffee from the kitchen.

She blinked, her eyes focusing on the familiar sight before her: Kuni, the midnight-furred cat, curled up beside her on the couch. His soft, rhythmic breathing filled the silence, and for a moment, she forgot about everything else. In that instant, there was only peace.

Lumine gently stretched, her fingers brushing Kuni’s fur as she sat up. Her heart swelled with a strange sense of contentment, and she couldn’t help but smile softly. He had been by her side for weeks now, yet she still couldn’t quite shake the feeling that something was different about him.

Kuni...

The way he looked at her with those deep, almost knowing eyes. The way he sought her out when she was feeling down, always there, never judging. The way he would stay close at night, as though protecting her from the world outside.

She leaned over, gently scratching behind his ears. His eyes fluttered open, the deep, indigo hues staring up at her, still clouded with the sleepiness of the early morning.

Lumine smiled again. "Good morning, Kuni," she murmured, her voice soft and tender.

Scaramouche, still in his cat form, blinked lazily, feeling the warmth of her touch seep into his very being. It was moments like this that made him forget the turmoil inside him. The struggle to keep his true identity hidden. The fear of what would happen if she ever found out the truth.

But in this moment, none of that seemed to matter.

He was content.

The day unfolded with a sense of ease. Lumine spent the morning finishing some assignments, while Scaramouche stayed close by her side, enjoying the quiet comfort of her company. He had never known peace like this before—not even when he was a human. There was something about Lumine’s presence that made him feel… safe.

Around noon, Lumine decided to take a break, stretching her arms above her head and yawning. She glanced at Kuni, who had been lounging in the sunbeam by the window, lazily grooming his fur.

"Come on, Kuni," she called, her voice playful. "Let's go for a walk."

Scaramouche flicked his tail in irritation, not exactly thrilled by the prospect of leaving the warmth of the apartment. But he didn’t protest. After all, he had grown accustomed to these small outings. Lumine had a way of making even the most mundane activities feel comforting.

She put on her coat, grabbed her keys, and opened the door, inviting Kuni to follow her. The chill of the outside air hit her face, and she pulled the coat tighter around her. The streets were quiet, the sound of distant traffic mingling with the soft rustling of leaves.

As they walked, Lumine absentmindedly pet Kuni, her fingers running through his midnight fur, feeling the warmth of his body against her palm. He followed her every step, his usual aloofness replaced with a gentle attentiveness.

"Why do you always stay so close to me?" she asked softly, almost as if she were speaking to herself. "I don’t mind, but I just... wonder sometimes."

Scaramouche's ears perked up, and for a brief moment, his human form flickered at the edges of his mind, but he quickly shoved the thought away. He was Kuni now—nothing more than a cat.

Still, the question lingered in the air, unanswered.

---

The day passed quietly, with nothing out of the ordinary happening. Lumine returned home, settled into her routine, and Scaramouche remained by her side, as always. Yet as the evening drew closer, he could feel the familiar unease creeping back into his chest. The questions that he had been pushing aside for so long were rising to the surface once again.

What would happen if Lumine ever found out the truth?

Would she still care for him if she knew what he truly was?

And more importantly—could he ever truly be happy living a lie?

---

That night, Lumine lay in bed, her mind restless. The soft sounds of rain tapping against the window seemed to mirror her inner turmoil. She could feel Kuni’s presence beside her, his warmth comforting against the coldness that seemed to creep into her soul.

She reached out, her fingers brushing through his fur once more. The act felt oddly intimate, like a promise that she hadn’t yet understood.

"I know you're hiding something, Kuni," she whispered, her voice barely audible in the stillness of the room.

Scaramouche didn’t respond. He stayed silent, his body stiffening slightly under her touch. His heart raced, but he did nothing to pull away.

Lumine didn’t press further. Instead, she let out a long sigh, her hand resting on his back as she closed her eyes.

"Maybe, one day," she murmured. "You’ll tell me."

The words hung in the air between them, unspoken, but felt.

And as Scaramouche lay there, his midnight fur brushing against her palm, he couldn’t help but wonder the same thing. Would he tell her the truth? Or would he keep his secret forever, knowing that the comfort he found in her presence might be the only thing that truly mattered?

For the first time in a long while, he didn’t have an answer.
