The early morning sun filtered through the trees, casting soft rays on the campsite as the group began packing up their things. The air was crisp, and the sound of leaves rustling in the breeze was the only noise that could be heard, aside from the occasional grunt of someone struggling with their tent. The river, once bustling with water splashes and chaos, now lay calm, reflecting the clear sky above.
Lumine was rolling up her sleeping bag, wiping the remnants of sleep from her eyes when she felt a presence behind her. She turned, only to find Scaramouche standing a mere inch away, a sly grin playing at the corners of his lips.
âGood morning, darling,â he purred, his eyes glinting mischievously as he leaned in just a bit closer.
Lumine blinked in surprise and backed up slightly, still trying to process her exhaustion from the day before. âGood morningâ¦â she muttered, unsure if she was ready for the usual teasing that came with his presence.
âSuch a lovely day to wake up next to me, donât you think?â Scaramouche continued, his tone dripping with charm as he tilted his head, his violet eyes almost gleaming in the early light.
Lumine rolled her eyes, already feeling the warmth creep up her neck. âNot you again, Scaramoucheâ¦â
Aether, who had been struggling with his own tent, turned his head sharply at the sound of Scaramoucheâs voice. His eyes narrowed when he saw the way Scaramouche was leaning toward Lumine, and his protective instincts kicked in almost immediately. âLumine, you okay?â he asked, his voice laced with concern as he walked over.
Before Lumine could respond, Scaramouche shot Aether a glance, his grin never faltering. âOh, Iâm just giving your sister some much-needed attention,â he teased, stretching his arms dramatically. âShe seems to be all packed up and ready to leave. How nice.â
Aether shot him a glare that could melt steel, but Scaramouche was undeterred. He turned his attention back to Lumine, leaning closer until he could feel the heat of her breath. âI bet you donât even need help with your bag, do you, sweetheart?â
Lumine sighed, trying to remain composed. âIâm fine, Scaramouche. I can do it myself.â
âIâm sure you can,â Scaramouche replied smoothly, though his tone suggested otherwise. He lowered his voice, making it just quiet enough for only her to hear. âBut what if you did need some help? Iâd be more than happy to carry your bags, you know.â
Aether, who was still standing nearby, growled lowly under his breath. âDonât you dare, Scaramouche.â
Scaramouche turned to look at him, the teasing glint in his eyes turning into a mischievous challenge. âWhatâs wrong, Aether? Afraid Iâll steal your precious sister away?â He crossed his arms and leaned back, eyeing Lumine from head to toe in a way that sent a shiver down her spine. âI mean, who wouldnât want someone like her around?â
Lumineâs face flushed with a mix of embarrassment and frustration. âScaramoucheâ¦â she started, but before she could continue, Scaramouche was already making his move again.
He leaned in closer, his voice dropping to a whisper. âYou know, darling, I always appreciate a challenge, but with someone as beautiful as you, how could I resist?â
Lumine blinked, her face flushing a deeper shade of red. âS-Stop it, Scaramouche!â
Aether was now glaring at the two of them with an intensity that could rival the sun. He took a step forward, closing the distance between him and Scaramouche, his voice dripping with sarcasm. âYou know, Scaramouche, if you keep up with this flirting, I might just have to drag you away myself.â
Scaramouche smirked, clearly enjoying the tension. âOh? So, youâll be the one to steal me away, then? How romantic.â He mocked a sigh, making his voice overdramatic. âBut no worries, I can handle myself.â
Aether clenched his fists, but before he could say anything more, Kazuha and Ayaka walked up, both of them carrying their bags and looking somewhat amused by the scene unfolding before them.
âIs everything okay over here?â Ayaka asked with a raised eyebrow, noticing the obvious tension between Aether and Scaramouche.
Kazuha chuckled softly, giving Aether a knowing look. âSeems like Scaramouche has been working overtime this morning, huh?â
Lumine sighed, rubbing her temples. âCan we just finish packing and leave already?â
âAww, but I was just getting started.â Scaramouche leaned toward Lumine again, his grin never faltering as he tilted his head. âMaybe next time, we could go for a walk together. Just the two of us. What do you say?â
Lumine was about to respond when Aether, who had been glaring at Scaramouche with a fierce protectiveness, stepped forward again, now fully ready to defend his sister. âBack off, Scaramouche,â he growled under his breath.
âOh, Aether,â Scaramouche purred. âYouâre really starting to get under my skin. Maybe Iâll take you up on that challenge of yours⦠Just donât get too close to Lumine. She deserves someone who can appreciate her, not just a jealous, overprotective brother.â
Aetherâs jaw clenched, but before the situation could escalate further, Albedo and Amber arrived with their bags, breaking the awkward tension.
âIs this a bad time?â Amber asked innocently, glancing between the two boys and Lumine, who was clearly flustered.
âJust a bit of morning chaos,â Kazuha answered, the corners of his mouth curling up in amusement.
Lumine sighed, feeling the tension finally start to ease. âLetâs just go home,â she muttered, knowing the day ahead would bring its own challenges with these two constantly at each other's throats.
As everyone finished packing up, Scaramouche flashed one last, flirtatious grin at Lumine. âMaybe next time, darling,â he said, winking playfully. âIâll be waiting.â
Aether, of course, was already glaring daggers at him again, and Lumine couldnât help but chuckle lightly, despite herself. She was sure this camping trip would be one for the books.
As they walked back toward the cars, the chaos of the previous days still lingered in the air, but for now, it seemed like they could finally get some peaceâmaybe.
