Paul and I had exchanged numbers, not without him teasing me a bit beforehand. After our deep conversation, I felt a gentle exhaustion settling in. The flood of new information made my head spin, and I could feel fatigue slowly draining my energy. To counter this, we had decided to take a walk in the woods.
As soon as we arrived in the dense, green forests of LaPush, Paul began to pull me away from the usual paths into the thicket of trees. The scent of fresh moss and the songs of birds enveloped us like a gentle embrace from nature. When he finally seemed satisfied with the spot, he stopped and turned to me with a broad grin.
"I'm going to show you something really cool," he said, his eyes sparkling with excitement. But what happened next made me pause for a moment. Paul started to undress. A shiver of confusion ran through me. What was happening?
"I know you're not cold. You told me that yesterday," I stammered, watching as he removed his clothes piece by piece. Confusion and a hint of embarrassment rose within me, and I felt myself growing redder with each article of clothing that landed on the ground. "You really didn't have to take off your clothes for this."
When Paul finally took off his pants and began to fiddle with his underwear, I felt that things were taking an unexpected turn. I was about to turn away when a sudden, tearing sound caught my attention.
Where Paul had just been undressing, there now stood a wolf. He was large, majestic, and his silver-gray fur shimmered in the sunlight like the finest steel. My breath caught as I beheld the beauty of this creature. In that moment, I was captivated by the grace and power radiating from the wolf. It was as if nature itself had revealed one of its most mysterious treasures before me.
The world around me seemed to stand still for a moment as I stared, entranced, into the deep, intelligent eyes of the wolf. The connection between us was almost tangible, and I felt my heart racing.
"May I" The words remained unspoken on my tongue as I slowly raised my hand to touch the soft fur before me. Paul moved closer, and in that moment, I realized just how impressively large he really was. As he stood directly in front of me, I had to lift my head to look into his deep, glowing eyes.
It seemed that he too became aware of the difference in our sizes, for he gently lay down before me, his muscular limbs relaxing in an elegant arc. He looked at me almost shyly, as if waiting for me to make the first move. But my hand had slipped back to my side during this silent interaction. Uncertainty washed over me. How was I supposed to communicate with him now that he was a wolf?
Suddenly, he thrust his head toward me, and with a gentle touch, he licked my hand before resting it under his head.
"Yuck, Paul! That's disgusting!" I exclaimed, shaking my hand, which now felt sticky and wet. An involuntary laugh escaped me as I tried to take the situation with humor. But then, noticing his intense gaze, I complied with his unspoken request and began to gently pet him on the head.
The moment my fingers glided over his soft fur, Paul closed his eyes and peacefully rested his head. The silence around us seemed to deepen as I sat down beside him on the ground. The world was captured in this little oasis of peace, and I enjoyed the soothing feeling of his gentle fur under my hands while the sounds of the forest faded into the distance.
There was a mysterious rustling in the dense bushes, and Paul shot an annoyed glance in the direction of the noise. Suddenly, a sandy-colored wolf stepped forward, its eyes sparkling with curiosity as it regarded us. Paul lifted his head, muscles tense, and growled threateningly at the newcomer.
However, the sandy-colored wolf seemed unfazed. With a lively, almost bouncing step, it approached us as if drawn by an invisible thread. Paul rose, positioned himself protectively in front of me, and signaled with his body language that this was his boundary.
A silent duel of gazes erupted between the two wolves. Neither of them moved, yet an invisible communication seemed to flow between them. Paul appeared increasingly annoyed, even as the other wolf eventually turned and stepped back in the direction it had come from. But before it completely vanished, it turned around one last time, snapped at Paulâs tail, and then quickly disappeared into the underbrush.
Paul howled after it, a mournful sound that broke the silence of the forest, before he too retreated behind a tree, his clothes firmly in his mouth.
A short time later, Paul emerged again, his eyes sparkling with excitement and pride. "So? What do you think? It's pretty cool, right?" he asked, his face radiating enthusiasm.
"Yes," I admitted, unable to help but gush. "And your fur is so fluffy and warm." Paul blushed slightly, his ears twitching with embarrassment, and he cleared his throat to cover his sudden shyness.
"That was Seth Clearwater," he explained finally, his voice sounding a bit more serious now. "He came because I haven't been listening to the others in the pack. He wanted to see where I was."
"How didn't you listen to them?" I asked, astonished. Questions formed in my mind, as I had heard no one in the silence of the forestâno humans and no sounds that would indicate a wolf.
"We wolves can communicate with our thoughts," Paul explained, scratching his head awkwardly. "It makes hunting prey and coordinating within the pack easier." A shy expression crept onto his face. "But I was so relaxed around you that I probably really didn't notice them. You have to know, the meeting I interrupted to search for you was supposed to continue in the afternoon. But I must have lost track of time again."
"Come with me," he urged, setting off with smooth, graceful movements. "I want to introduce you to the others. They will be happy to meet you."
We made our way through the underbrush, and I followed him with a pounding heart. The sun was slowly setting, casting a warm, golden light over the forest. I hadn't even realized how late it had gotten. The sounds of nature around us became livelier; birds chirped, and the rustling of leaves seemed to accompany us.
