Just as I was starting to relax again, I heard the voices of Jasper and Emmett coming into the house. They were animatedly talking about a practice fight they had apparently had recently. Emmett's laughter echoed through the rooms while Jasper responded in his calm voice. It was a familiar and pleasant background noise that gave me a sense of home.

But suddenly their conversation faltered, and I heard Emmett ask, "What smells like a wet dog in here?"

I couldn't help but chuckle. It was typical of Emmett to call things as he saw them. Paul, who was standing nearby, immediately perked up. I could see the tension in his shoulders as the two Cullens approached.

The door to the kitchen opened, and Jasper stepped in first. He paused when he saw Paul, and his expression quickly shifted from neutral to concerned. "Mary, are you okay?" he asked immediately, looking directly at me.

"Yeah, I'm fine," I replied, smiling at him to reassure him. "I just had a little mishap, but everything is good now."

Emmett, who was standing behind Jasper, stepped forward and looked at Paul as if he were an unwelcome guest. "And what's the dog doing here?" he asked bluntly, pointing at Paul with a broad grin on his face.

Paul looked at Emmett, and I could feel the tension in the air. "I'm not a dog," Paul shot back with a sharp look that revealed his determination. "I'm Paul."

"Emmett!" Jasper called out, trying to defuse the situation. "Knock it off. Paul belongs to Mary. We respect him."

"Okay, okay, I get it," Emmett said, raising his hands in a gesture of peace. "I won't bother you anymore, Paul. But I'm keeping an eye on you!"

I couldn't help but laugh. "Emmett, leave him alone. He's not here to cause trouble. We're just here to spend time together," I said, trying to bring things back into balance.

"Alright, let's just have some fun," Jasper suggested. "How about a little game?"

Paul shot me a skeptical look, but I could see the curiosity in his eyes. "Sure, why not? I'm in," he finally replied, shaking his head as if he could already feel the challenge. Emmett's eyes began to gleam with excitement. He was still a kid at heart.

He motioned for us to come along and led us behind the house. Then he went to a large rock, rested his elbow on it, and pointed at Paul. "Let's arm wrestle. Then we'll see who's stronger here."

Paul grinned and stepped forward, stretching his arms. "That sounds like a challenge, Emmett. Ready to embarrass yourself?"

"I never embarrass myself," Emmett replied confidently, rolling his shoulders to prepare. "I'm a vampire, and I have the strength of a bear!"

"And I'm a wolf, equipped with the strength of an entire pack. This will be an interesting duel," Paul shot back, positioning himself across from Emmett. I could feel the tension in the air as they interlocked their hands, challenging each other.

"Alright, you two, I'll act as the referee. No tricks, and let's keep it fair!" Jasper called out, placing himself between them. His calm presence helped ease the mood, and I couldn't suppress a smile. At the same time, I felt incredibly proud of Paul; he would have been much more hot-headed and impulsive in a situation like this before.

"Ready?" Jasper asked, glancing between the two of them. "On three… One, two, three!"

The two pressed their hands against each other, and I could feel the strength emanating from them. Emmett grinned as he applied pressure, but Paul wasn’t going down easily. I could see his muscles tense as he fought against Emmett's strength.

"Come on, Paul!" I called out encouragingly. "You can do it!"

"I won't give up!" Paul snapped, gritting his teeth as he struggled to push Emmett back. The two were locked in a fierce battle, and I could almost grasp the tension in the air.

But after a moment of intense pressure, it seemed Emmett was gaining the upper hand. With one final powerful push, he slowly but surely pressed Paul's hand toward the rock. "You're strong, Paul, but I'm stronger!" Emmett shouted triumphantly as he finally claimed victory, slamming Paul's hand down onto the rock with a loud clap.

Paul stared in disbelief at the connection of their hands for a moment before hanging his head. "Damn luck, Emmett," he mumbled, leaning back with a laugh. "I wasn't paying attention."

I stepped beside Paul and looked at his hand worriedly; it had made quite a noise when it hit the rock. He noticed my concern and reassured me, then pressed a kiss on my cheek. I felt my face flush.

“That was a good fight!” Paul said after a few moments. “But I think we should take it to the next level. How about a practice match? It takes not just strength, but also strategy.”

“Yes!” Emmett replied enthusiastically as he straightened up and prepared himself. “Let’s see what you’ve really got!”

“Okay, but I warn you, I won’t hold back!” Paul shot back with a grin as he stood up as well. Jasper stepped aside to make room for the match as we positioned ourselves at the imaginary sidelines. I was getting more nervous; even though Paul and Emmett had good control over themselves, I was still worried they might get hurt. Jasper placed a hand on my shoulder, sending a wave of calm over me.

The two faced each other, and I could feel the tension in the air as they sized each other up. Paul clenched his fists and prepared himself.

With a nod from Jasper, they were off. Emmett took the first step, reaching for Paul’s arm, but Paul quickly dodged back and delivered a light slap to Emmett’s shoulder. The two began to move around the space, and I could see them testing each other’s strengths and abilities.

Emmett was quick and agile, while Paul used his strength and endurance to keep Emmett in check. It was an impressive sight, and I couldn’t help but cheer and encourage them.

“Come on, Paul! Show him what you’ve got!” I shouted excitedly.

“You’d think you have a favorite,” a grinning Emmett called back to me before refocusing on Paul, who was laughing heartily.

The match between Paul and Emmett went into an exciting round, and I could practically feel the energy between them. Paul was determined, and with one final powerful tug, he managed to push Emmett to the ground. “Yes!” I exclaimed, cheering. Paul had won!

Emmett lay panting on the ground, his face adorned with a broad grin. “You really did it, Paul. I didn’t think you were that good!” he said, giving Paul a pat on the shoulder. “That was a good fight, no doubt.”

Paul laughed and helped Emmett to his feet. “Thanks, Emmett. You’re a tough opponent! That was fun.” The two exchanged friendly shoulder pats, and I noticed how the tensions between vampires and werewolves seemed to vanish for a moment. It was clear they shared a deeper connection despite their differences.

“You’re not so bad for a dog,” Emmett remarked to Paul. Paul gave him a brotherly pat on the shoulder in return and said, “You’re not so bad for a bloodsucker either.”

After the banter was over, Paul stood up and looked at the clock. “It’s time for my patrol,” he said with a sigh as he prepared for his task. “I need to make sure everything is alright before the night really begins.”

“I’ll walk with you for a bit,” I offered, smiling. “I can’t just watch you head into the woods alone.”

“That sounds good,” Paul replied, grinning. “A little company won’t hurt.”

We set off toward the border, and I felt good being by his side. As we walked through the woods, I sensed the calm presence of nature around us. The trees gently rustled in the wind, and the moonlight filtered through the branches, painting silver patterns on the ground.

“You know,” Paul began as we continued, “I think it’s great that we all get along so well. It feels like we’ve really created something special.”

"Yes, that's true," I replied. "There are so many differences between us, but in the end, we're all here to support each other."

"Exactly," Paul nodded. "And that's what matters. Whether we're fighting or just spending time together, we're always there for one another."

When we finally reached the border, Paul stopped and looked out into the night. "I'm going to go on patrol now. Take care of yourself, okay?"

"You too, Paul. Be careful and let me know if there's anything," I said, smiling at him.

"I will. And thanks for keeping me company. It means a lot to me," he replied, giving me a light pat on the back.

With one last look at him as he disappeared into the darkness, I felt warm and content.
