Chapter 144:
There was no need for Karla to say anything more. The words of the two other women were enough to send Ryannâs heart into turmoil.
But then, Ryann thought about how well Denzel usually treated her, and she found the courage to refute their claims. âMy husband will never do that.â
âLook, I donât mean to stir up any trouble,â Karla said, âbut what is the name of your daughterâs tutor?â
âCurtis,â Ryann said. âI donât remember her first nameâ¦â She had never really paid much attention to Eileenâs name.
Karla said, âEileen Curtis?â
âOh, yes, thatâs her name!â Ryannâs eyes lit up for a few seconds. âHow did you know?â
Karla placed the cards on the table with an angry huff. âWell, I know her. My sonâs former boss. She used to make my son work overtime, well into the night. But it was all a ruse to seduce him. Even after my son tendered his resignation, she continues to keep in contact with him, constantly flirting and baiting him into seeking her outâ¦â
Ryann was visibly taken aback. âIs that so? So thatâs the kind of person she is?â
âIâm telling you, people might look innocent on the surface, but that isnât always the truth. Most of them disguise their true, wicked nature. Trust me, I know this Eileen rather well. Are you familiar with Bryan Dawson?â Karla said.
Ryann nodded; she had heard Denzel mention Bryan over a dozen times in the past.
Karla said, âBryan is one of the most influential men in Onaland, but he once fell under Eileenâs charms. I mean, just think about her slender waist and long legs. Every man would be tempted. But Bryan was just playing around with Eileen. After all, he never runs short of any woman he wants. As for your husband, however⦠well, there is no telling what will happen in the future, right?â
Karlaâs words hit Ryann like a freight train, and the ball of dread in her stomach only tightened.
IâÅ£â¬$â ¢â@þŧâ¬Ñ$ Iη gâÅиovεÅÅ¡.cøm Denzel was everything to her. There was no way she was going to stand by and let another woman seduce him.
âWell, enough of this distasteful topic. Letâs continue playing.â With that, Karla expertly reshuffled the deck of cards.
Ryann was no longer in the mood to play at that point, but she couldnât bring herself to ask her friends to leave. She continued to play, even though her mind was somewhere else.
As a result, she lost quite a bit of money.
Karla asked when Adalina would finish her classes and then ended the game right before that. She packed up her things and left with the others.
No sooner had they left than Eileen came downstairs. She found Ryann sitting by herself in the living room and hesitated for a brief moment before saying, âI am done with the lessons, Miss Vance. I will see you tomorrow. Goodbye.â
âWait!â Ryann stood up and walked over with her arms crossed. âI have a question for you. Did Denzel ask you to do this tutoring job, or were you the one who offered your services to him?â
Eileen paused and thought about it. âI called Mr. Vance for the job,â she replied.
Ryannâs face darkened. âDo you even have his phone number?â
Eileen inhaled slowly, not really surprised by Ryannâs sudden interrogation. The moment she saw Karla in the Vance residence, Eileen knew that the woman was up to something.
She said, âBecause Mr. Vance made an online inquiry about tutoring lessons and left his contact number. We compile all this data on a periodic basis and then take the initiative to call up prospective clients. Mr. Vance happens to be one of them. I believe Mr. Vance was also contacted by other institutions that have access to the online forum.â
After a pause, she added, âActually, I wasnât the one who called Mr. Vance the first time, but our receptionist.â
Silence ensued as Ryann processed everything. She couldnât find any fault in Eileenâs explanation.
Twin beams of light streaked through the window as a car ground to a halt outside. Eileen took that as her cue to leave. âItâs getting late; I wonât impose on you any longer, Mrs. Vance. Have a good night!â
Then, she turned to the door and left the house.
Denzel was drunkenly stumbling out of the car when Eileen came out. As Eileen drew near to him, he tripped on his feet.
Eileen quickly steadied Denzel, then immediately stepped back to put some distance between them.
âIâm sorry, Ms. Curtis.â Denzel had to squint at Eileen for a few seconds before finally recognizing who she was.
Eileen smiled politely and shook her head. âItâs all right, Mr. Vance. Mrs. Vance is waiting for you inside.â
Sure enough, when she glanced back, she found Ryann standing in the doorway, staring at them.
Ryann looked like she had just caught them doing something wrong.
Eileen immediately turned away and got into her car, driving onto the road.
A few minutes later, Denzel was slumped on the sofa, utterly confused by Ryannâs sudden questioning. âWhatâs your relationship with Eileen?â Ryann asked.
âWhat relationship?â
Ryann said, âTell me! Did she seduce you? Is that why you hired her to be Adalinaâs tutor? Were you swayed by her good looks?â
Denzel let out a loud burp and waved his hand. âWhat kind of nonsense are you spouting? As long as youâll let me sleep peacefully, you are the only one in my heart!â
Unfortunately, Denzelâs drunken ramblings did not help his plight. Ryann lunged at him and slapped his back multiple times.
âYou ungrateful bastard! Have you forgotten exactly who it was that stuck with you during your worst times? Mark my words, if you dare to be unfaithful to me, I will kill you and that woman with my own hands!â Ryann exclaimed.
Ryann continued to cry and rant. But after a while, she found that her husband had already fallen asleep on the couch.
She wasnât done with the matter, though. When Denzel woke up the next morning, he was greeted by a still-seething Ryann.
Now that he was sober, it only took a few disgruntled words for Denzel to grasp what his wife was mad about.
He explained, âPlease donât misunderstand, honey. We only met Ms. Curtis a handful of times before, and there is nothing going on between us. We are acquaintances at best, and Ms. Curtis is a good and respectable person, yet listen to these gossip mongers who are trying to poison your judgment!â
Ryann believed Denzel. In fact, she knew that her husband was loyal to her now.
What worried her was the possibility that Denzel might stray in the future. She felt it was necessary to make things clear to him while it was still early.
