Chapter 295:
Screams pierced the air as the crowd that was under the chandelier scampered in panic.
Eileen subconsciously ran for safety, but it was too crowded.
She navigated her way through the crowd with one hand cupping her belly and the other reaching out for balance.
The sound of the shattering chandelier seemed to spread across the entire place like a death knell.
Eileen got to what she thought was a safe spot, but then she was suddenly pushed into a dangerous area by a force. She fell forward. The crystal chandelier was just above her, and she could hear the shattering sound.
All of a sudden, she hit someoneâs chest with great force. Just then, she perceived a faint smell of smoke.
Bryan had given her a safe landing when she fell forward and had also taken the impact of the falling chandelier for her.
She heard him grunt in pain, followed by the sound of flesh being pierced.
After the chandelier hit them, someone spotted blood trickling from Bryanâs body. Cries for help filled the dark room.
Eileen was extremely terrified. She lay still in Bryanâs arms, tightly holding onto a button on his suit.
She sobbed as tears trickled from the corners of her eyes.
âHey, stop crying,â Bryan said as he tried to console her. Then Eileen felt something on her face; it was a warm liquid.
ðÃЯE ðPÄÎTÎÅ IÐ GÎÅÐÃVÎÅÅ.áÃá° The strong smell of blood made her even more terrified as she tightened her grip on his button, pressing her lips together in a bid not to say anything.
The security department had been contacted to address the electrical circuitry and restore illumination to the building.
The crowd outside was dismissed, except for close relatives of the Burton and Meyer families to provide them the support they needed.
Soon, the room quieted down. Eileenâs heart beat fast as her tears mixed with the blood trickling down to her ears. âAre you okay? You were too impulsive, donâtâ¦â Eileen suddenly let go of his button and embraced his waist, her hands touching Bryanâs back.
Bryan said, âLet go. Iâm alright.â
As soon as he said this, the lights suddenly came on.
Eileen retrieved her hand from his waist immediately. She looked up to see his pale face.
Bryan was concerned about her well-being as he checked her to make sure she wasnât hurt.
âBryan!â Zola called out. She quickly ordered the security team, âHurry, help him! Heâs terribly injured! Thereâs blood everywhere!â
The ambulance had just arrived, and the complex light fixtures were being removed by some electrical personnel.
Not long after, the light fixtures were taken apart, with the exception of the rod that had pierced through Bryanâs back.
They couldnât remove that without a doctor present. Eileen, unharmed and protected by Bryan, was also taken to the ambulance for safety reasons.
âIs his family here? Please join me here!â a paramedic called out from the ambulance.
Zola answered immediately, âI am. Coming!â
Seeing this, Phoebe tore the train of her dress instantly, turning it into a mini gown to allow free movement. Then, she hurried into the ambulance, too, to follow up. âIâm concerned about Eileen,â she told Jacob.
âAlright.â Jacobâs face was pale with worry. He asked his father to help follow up the matter with the hotel while he drove out, following the ambulance.
In the ambulance, Eileen lay beside Bryan, who was laid flat on his stomach because of the rod behind him. He slowly opened his eyes as he studied her face, streaked with blood and tears.
The mixture of blood and tears painted her face, exposing her prominent beauty.
Bryan lifted his bloodstained hand and gently touched her face.
Eileen avoided his touch, turning away from him as more tears welled up in her eyes.
âBryan, stay put,â Zola said when she noticed this. His expression cooled, and he placed his hand a bit higher on Eileenâs shoulder, staying silent.
In the hospital, Bryan was rushed into the ER while Eileen was taken to the examination room.
The doctor, who had been at the scene, was the only one in the examination room.
Phoebe came in to keep Eileen company, and Zola came in afterward.
âDo you feel pain anywhere?â the doctor inquired, seeing that Eileen had no external injuries.
Eileen shook her head and answered, âNo, Iâm alright.â Her abdomen felt normal. The anxiety she had felt also began to dissipate.
âYou must be lucky. Your husband did a nice job protecting you. Nevertheless, we must run some tests for a comprehensive assessment of your internal organs,â the doctor explained as he got ready to proceed.
âHeâs not my husband,â Eileen said firmly, blushing past Zola. She then added, âAn assessment wonât be necessary since I donât feel any discomfort.â She worried that some of the tests involved might be contraindicated for pregnant women.
The doctor was surprised at her revelation. âReally? Heâs not your husband? He must be your boyfriend, then? Or fiancé?â
âHe is nothing like that,â Eileenâs voice grew colder. âWe are barely acquainted.â
âWellâ¦â Dumbfounded, the doctor glanced at Phoebe and Zola. He said, âWell, after today, I donât think you will be barely acquainted, seeing that heâs your lifesaver.â
Lifesaver?
The word heightened Zolaâs alertness.
She hadnât expected that Bryan loved Eileen so much that he had risked his life for her safety.
âAre you here to treat the patient or to chat?â Phoebe couldnât condone the doctorâs nosiness anymore. She turned to Eileen and asked, âAre you certain you donât want the tests? There could be internal injuries, you know? I know you want to leave immediately so that you donât have to see Bryan, but you should get a thorough check-up.â
Phoebe helped her sit up. Eileen shook her head and said decisively, âI donât want any examinations, and Iâm not leaving either. Bryanâs in the emergency room because of me. I should stay to see if he lives or dies.â Her words were harsh.
Zola couldnât take it anymore. âAre you even human, Eileen? Bryan is in critical condition because of you. How could you be so heartless?â
âHeartless, you say?â Eileen straightened her dress. She demanded with a cold voice, âWas that not what you wanted? Why the pretense? Or do you expect me to come crying and thanking him for saving me while keeping a proper distance?â
Of course, Zola did not want that. She had only spoken impulsively in Bryanâs defense.
Eileen continued, âIâm curious too. That document made him furious. He called off the wedding because I was said to be unworthy to bear his child, yet he risked his life for me. What do you make of that?â
Eileen approached Zola. She leaned forward and whispered, âYou desire to have him as a husband, right? You did everything you could to separate us. Itâs honestly a pity that you couldnât do the most important thing. Do you think you could take me away from his life?â
With that, she brushed past Zolaâs shoulder and left the examination room to wait outside the operating room. She repeatedly clenched and unclenched her fists as she tried to remain calm.
Stella arrived at the hospital thirty minutes later. She paused on seeing Eileen seated outside the operating room.
Zola quickly approached Stella. âThereâs no need to worry too much. The doctor said though he lost a lot of blood, there are no injuries to his vital organs.â
âHow did this happen?â Stella asked Zola as her eyes moved from looking at Eileen.
âI have nothing to do with this. He was injured trying to save Eileen.â Pointing at Eileen, Zola continued, âHe risked his life for her safety, but this heartless woman only stayed to see whether he lives or dies. Sheâs soâ¦â Zola tried to defend Bryan but was cut short by Stellaâs impatient rebuke. âDo you expect her to be soft-hearted? Donât you know why sheâs this way?â
How could Zola expect Eileen to be soft-hearted after everything that had happened?
Eileen seemed oblivious to their conversation. Her gaze was fixed on the light above the operating door. The red light soon turned green, and the door opened. The doctor removed his facemask. âWhich one of you is the patient?â
âI am!â Stella hurried to the doctor. âHowâs my grandson?â The doctor said with a frown, âHe lost a lot of blood, and the rod was one millimeter away from puncturing his lung. Heâs quite lucky. If he had been brought in a minute later, he wouldnât have made it. His life is saved, and he is being sutured. He will be taken to the ICU to be observed for three days. His life was saved.â
Those words made Eileen feel relieved. Overwhelmed with emotions, she burst out.
âIâll go after Eileen now. Stay here and offer any assistance,â Phoebe said to Jacob.
âAlright.â Jacob had been gripped with fear. He hadnât expected the wedding to turn out like this.
He went over and joined the doctor and Stellaâs discussion.
Zola, on the other hand, watched Eileen leave so quickly, her lips tightly pressed together.
The relationship between Eileen and Bryan was something she found so difficult to understand. They didnât seem to care about each other, yet Bryan had risked his life for Eileen. She couldnât help but feel threatened. But that was all they had between themâa lingering sentiment.
Zola had known Bryan since childhood. He wasnât one to forget someone he loved so easily.
That must be why he had saved Eileen impulsively, even if he hated her.
Zola convinced herself that if Bryan regained consciousness and found out that Eileen had left even before his surgery was finished and had stayed not because she was concerned, but because she wanted to find out if he lived or died, he would be disappointed. That way, his love for Eileen would die in the face of her heartlessness.
A call from Lydia suddenly jolted Zola back to reality. She hurriedly moved to the end of the corridor to pick up the call. âHello.â
âHow is he? Is he dead?â Lydia was excited, expecting bad news.
Zola was uncomfortable with her choice of words but still replied, âNo, heâs fine. He will be monitored closely for three days in the ICU. Aside from that, thereâs no problem.â Lydiaâs voice was filled with disappointment. âDarn it! You mean he has no complications? He should have at least been paralyzed!â
