Chapter 328:
Eileen felt Bryanâs growing dislike for Zola had turned into outright hatred.
âAfter the accident involving Vivian, Kian suggested I marry Vivian to provide her with a comfortable life,â Benjamin said with a forced smile. âIt seems they always treat us like weâre just pawns.â
When Vivian had been in good health, she would often command Benjamin with a cold attitude.
Kian had not said anything about it. Indeed, when Benjamin had begun working at the company and started helping Vivian with certain duties quietly, Kian had even warned him.
âLet go of any silly ideas you have. Vivian is the Warren familyâs daughter. Donât get any ideas. If I find you with any inappropriate thoughts, I wonât hesitate to take action,â Kian had said.
At that time, Benjamin had thought the situation was ridiculously funny. He had only helped because he feared Vivianâs complaints, not because of any real fondness for her.
The elevator doors opened. Looking at Benjaminâs somber face, Eileen couldnât help but laugh.
âMy previous words still stand,â Benjamin said, removing his hand from his pocket. âWe are suitable for each other.â
âI have something I canât tell you right now,â Eileen hesitated, then met his gaze with a serious expression. âBut soon, youâll see why weâre not meant to be. Iâm not the right one for you.â
She had been with Bryan for many years, and now, with a child involved, she felt even less deserving of Benjaminâs love.
Your adventure awaits at gαâηÏνððsâ¤cãm Benjamin understood she was rejecting him and didnât insist further. âThen hereâs to working well together in the future,â he said.
âSure,â Eileen replied with a smile and then exited the building.
Once Eileen arrived home, she planned to talk with Bailee about the new secretary and review the resume.
âHas Bailee not returned yet?â She removed her shoes in the entryway and noticed only Milford doing his homework next to Gabrielaâs baby carriage.
Milford looked up and pointed upstairs, âSheâs upstairs. She actually came back early and has been in her room since.â
âReally?â Eileen looked up the staircase as she took down her bag. Just as she was about to go upstairs, Ruby pulled her aside.
With her hands still wet from washing, Ruby quickly let go of Eileen and wiped her hands on her clothes. She looked worried. âEileen, somethingâs not right with Bailee. Could you please talk to her? She wonât talk to me about it!â
âDonât worry. Sheâs probably just exhausted from the job fair,â Eileen reassured Ruby. âYou meet all kinds of people there.â
âI think itâs more than that. You should go and ask her,â Ruby urged, nudging Eileen toward the stairs. âTry to get her to come down for dinner.â
Eileen nodded, understanding Rubyâs concern. âAlright. Mom, you start making dinner. Iâll take care of this.â
Eileen, with a plate of fruit in hand, walked up the stairs and gently knocked on Baileeâs door.
âI donât want to have dinner tonight,â Bailee said, sounding disheartened.
âItâs not about dinner. We need to discuss the hiring,â Eileen said.
After a few moments, Bailee opened the door.
The room was dark, making it hard for Eileen to see Baileeâs face clearly. âDo you mind if I turn on the light?â Eileen asked.
âIâll do it,â Bailee said, reaching for the switch. She didnât look back as she moved to sit by the French window, her head down.
Eileen set the fruit plate on the table before Bailee and immediately noticed her red, swollen eyes.
âIs this about Huey?â Eileen asked.
As soon as Hueyâs name came up, Baileeâs tears started to flow. âToday, I met Hueyâs mother. She was arranging a blind date for him.â
Eileen paused for a while before saying, âShe doesnât support your relationship with Huey? Huey told you she was fine with it just to keep you from being upset, didnât he?â
âYes.â Bailee nodded slightly, her voice a faint whisper. âWas it out of kindness that he lied? How could he not tell me the truth about this? Iâve already told Mom about it. She still believes she is supposed to meet Hueyâs parents soon.â
Previously, when Huey had angrily denied his relationship with Bailee to Winona, Ruby had become very upset.
If Bailee told Ruby about Hueyâs lie this time, Ruby would likely see Huey as immature and unreliable.
âIâll speak to Mom. But you need to deal with the situation with Huey yourself. You know how he can be after all this time.â Eileen handed Bailee a slice of watermelon. âBut I want to know why his mother disapproves of your relationship.â
Bailee accepted the watermelon, her head lowered as she ate. âPerhaps Iâm just not the type of woman she envisions as a daughter-in-law.â
âThatâs absurd,â Eileen quickly dismissed the thought.
âYouâre beautiful and intelligent. Who wouldnât want you as their daughter-in-law?â
Bailee hesitated, not wanting to mention that the real issue involved Eileen. âShe just doesnât approve of us being together, and honestly, I donât want to delve into why. Eileen, could you talk to Mom for me? Iâll deal with Huey and his mother.â
âAlright, letâs drop this topic for now,â Eileen replied. âYou told me you were going to sign the contract tomorrow. Show me that personâs resume.â
âOh, right,â Bailee replied, standing up suddenly. âI left the resume behind. My mindâs been elsewhere today.â
She had forgotten the resume at the education agency.
âDonât stress about it, I trust your judgment,â Eileen reassured Bailee as she stood up. âJoin us for dinner.â
âOkay.â Bailee picked up the fruit plate and exited the room with Eileen. âThe personâs name is Dalores Sampson. Sheâs quite beautiful and has recently graduated from college.â
âDalores Sampson?â
The name rang a bell in Eileenâs mind, invoking a vague sense of recognition, though she couldnât quite place it.
âOnce she signs the contract with me tomorrow, she can start on Monday, right?â Bailee asked.
âYes, arrange for her to start at Freguson Group the day after tomorrow,â Eileen replied.
Eileen took a moment to talk to Ruby, citing Baileeâs packed schedule as a reason to delay any meeting with the Baker family.
She avoided mentioning Huey explicitly, but Rubyâs expression showed she understood what was going on.
The next day, news that Bryan was stepping down from Apex Group spread quickly.
Eileen couldnât look away from the headlines, overwhelmed by the situation.
She knew that Bryan owned several high-value properties worth tens of millions, and that the Dawson Mansion was worth a fortune.
Yet, compared to Apex Groupâs multi-billion-dollar empire, those assets were mere trifles.
Phoebe was just as puzzled and called Eileen, clearly confused. âWhat is Bryan thinking? Is he just going to sit on his remaining properties and do nothing?â
Before, Eileen would have confidently said that Bryan wouldnât make such a choice, but she found herself at a loss for words, questioning if she had ever truly understood Bryan.
âEileen, come to my place for lunch today. Iâm pregnant, and itâs hard for me to go out,â Phoebe suddenly suggested.
It was the weekend, and Eileen had no plans. Yet, she looked over at her daughter, who was still asleep, and said, âThanks for the invitation, but I think Iâll spend the day with Gabriela.â
âYou donât need to stay glued to her side!â Bailee and Milford had lingered outside the door for quite a while. It was a rare occurrence for both of them to be free from their usual duties.
They had gotten up early, waiting for Eileen and Gabriela to wake up.
Eileen rubbed her forehead and looked at the door. âYou two, come in.â
Bailee opened the door and walked in, with Milford following closely.
But they both stopped when they noticed Gabriela was still sleeping.
âEileen, if you need to go out, just go. Iâm here to take care of Gabriela,â Bailee said, on the verge of hurrying over to urge Eileen to rise.
Eileen, resting her chin on her hand, replied, âYouâre her aunt, and Milfordâs her uncle, but Iâm her mother. Itâs rare for me to have a weekend off, and I want to be with her.â
Milford said earnestly, âBut youâve been back for a while now. How often have you seen Phoebe? This might be a good chance for you two to catch up before she has her baby. There will be less time to do so once she becomes a mother. Besides, itâs just lunch. You can come right back after.â
On the other end of the line, Phoebe chuckled. âThat makes sense. Iâve always known Milford is smart. Okay, itâs settled.â
Before Eileen had a chance to respond, Phoebe hung up.
Eileen sat up straight. Before she could utter a word, Milford quickly said, âDonât be angry! Iâve actually got some good news for you today.â
âIf itâs not really good news, I wonât have lunch with Phoebe,â Eileen replied immediately.
Milford looked proud. âThe school said I can advance a grade. Iâve finished the high school curriculum in just one year. Ready to take the SAT now?â
âReally?â Eileenâs eyes opened wide in astonishment.
She had been too caught up in her matters to pay close attention to Milfordâs academic progress over the last year.
She was aware he was intelligent.
Yet, she had not expected him to achieve such remarkable academic success.
He truly was a prodigy!
âRemember what we agreed?â Eileen teased. âYou owe me a cut when you start making money.â
Milford felt resigned. âWhy donât you take advantage of this? Maybe let me work for you for a few years?â
With his capabilities, he was sure to land a high-paying job after graduation. He would be an asset to any business.
âIf I let you work too hard and you end up not marrying anyone, Iâll be the one to blame.â Eileen laughed heartily. What Milford had said was indeed fantastic news. Just then, Gabriela woke up, yawning and stretching.
After persuading Eileen to head out early, Bailee and Milford didnât take over the babyâs care. They allowed Eileen to finish the morning activities of washing and dressing the baby, and then, they all went downstairs for breakfast together.
By ten oâclock in the morning, overwhelmed by the relentless messages from Phoebe and with Bailee and Milford eagerly wanting to spend time with Gabriela, Eileen headed to Phoebeâs house.
On her way to Phoebeâs place, she stopped to buy some baby items for Phoebe. When she reached Phoebeâs home and parked at the front door, she spotted Bryanâs car.
Bryan was also there. This clarified why Phoebe had been so persistent about her coming.
Eileen frowned upon realizing this.
Phoebe, noticing Eileen from the window, stood up and came out to greet her. âItâs all because of Jacob. I just wanted to talk about Bryanâs issue with you. But as soon as Jacob knew you were coming, he called Bryan over, thinking it was better for you to discuss everything directly with Bryan.â
