Chapter 480:
Sheâd tried calling Huey twice during the ride home, but his phone was off, so she had no choice but to wait.
She waited until dawn.
It wasnât until the receptionist from the educational center rang about a visitor that Bailee realized it was already 9 a.m.
Her eyes were sore and swollen from lack of sleep, but she managed to freshen up and head to work, her mind still tangled with worries about Hueyâs absence.
Upon her arrival, the receptionist quickly approached her and directed her to the waiting area. âMs. Brooks, a lady has been waiting for you for a while. She specifically asked to see you.â
âThank you. Iâll handle it from here,â Bailee replied, aware that as the manager of the educational center, she was often the first point of contact.
As she approached the waiting woman, Bailee greeted her warmly. âHello, I manage the educational center. You can call me Ms. Brooks. How can I assist you today regarding your childâs education?â
Jillian nodded in acknowledgment. âActually, itâs not about tutoring. Iâm here to talk about something personal with you.â
Taken aback, Bailee sat down across from Jillian. âReally? Do I know you?â
âNot directly, but I know your husband, Huey,â Jillian explained, offering her hand. âIâm Jillian Rayne, Hueyâs childhood betrothed.â
As Bailee processed this revelation, her mind spun with confusion, the unexpected encounter triggering a storm of emotions inside her. The noise from the bustling street outside couldnât mask the turmoil she felt within.
She observed how different she and Jillian were, both in demeanor and appearance. Huey had often expressed a desire to take her to lively events, yet she had hesitated, her cautious nature always holding her back. Huey had even complained about her timidity before. Was it possible Huey was drawn to Jillianâs bold and adventurous spirit?
âLast night, Huey and I met, and it seems we both still understand each other quite well. We believe weâre a match. But heâs reluctant to discuss this with you, given that you two are married.â Jillian paused, allowing Bailee a moment to gather her thoughts before taking a sip of her coffee.
âYes, weâre married. You donât mind that?â Bailee responded, regaining her composure.
âNot in the slightest.â Jillian set her cup down with a soft clink against the saucer. âAs long as Miss Brooks doesnât make a fuss about it. Weâre all mature here; itâs time to be decisive about this.â
Then, Jillian pulled a divorce agreement from her bag. âPlease sign this. Your marriage is relatively new; I doubt there are any significant assets to argue over.â
Bailee clenched her thigh under the table, a silent reminder to remain composed. âI married Huey. If weâre to divorce, he should be the one to tell me.â
âHe did make those vows, but he married you quickly as a rebellious act against his mother. Itâs difficult for him to initiate this divorce talk. I hope you can understand where heâs coming from.â Jillian then produced a card. âThereâs two hundred thousand dollars here as a settlement from him. I was going to keep it hidden, but youâre more stubborn than I anticipated. You can take this and think it over, Miss Brooks.â
