Ruby sighed. “She mentioned… Huey’s caught up in a competition. She’s having trouble reaching him.”

This wasn’t entirely an excuse; Bailee knew Huey was involved in a competition. But she hadn’t brought up the events of that night to Ruby, especially since she hadn’t seen Huey return and was unclear about what had happened.

Just then, Bryan’s phone rang. Eileen took Gabriela from him, allowing him to go upstairs to take the call.

The study was dimly lit, with only the moonlight providing some illumination. Positioned by the window, Bryan swiped to answer the call, and Josue’s teasing voice echoed.

“If I congratulate you now, you won’t think I’m mocking you for marrying into the Curtis family, will you?”

Bryan frowned, listening intently. “Is that all?”

Josue quickly responded, “No. I’m skilled at digging deep. It was challenging, but I uncovered a few things. Travis’ father is someone who operates from the shadows. I suspect he’s trying to use the Dawson family to clean up his son’s background, since he can’t stay hidden forever.”

Josue wasn’t an expert in these matters, but he had solid connections. He had no hesitation in reaching out to his ex-wife’s brother, who was involved in the underground scene, to gather intelligence.

“With Brandon ousted from the Dawson family, their schemes have hit a snag, and their connections to you are severed,” Josue added. “The man will likely seek out another family to exploit, though it’s uncertain how vindictive he might be…”
