Chapter 519:
âI have money,â Eileen said, pulling a card from her purse and handing it to Milford. âUse mine. You can pay me back after you graduate and start earning.â
The sight of the card made Milfordâs eyes water, but he gently pushed it back toward her. âMy lifeâs difficult, but I can manage. I donât want to trouble you anymore. The principal spoke to me yesterday, and several professors will mentor me one-on-one. I might even graduate next year. Itâs only six months away, right? I can do itâ¦â
Milfordâs voice trailed off, and before he could finish, he suddenly collapsed backward.
Eileen gasped, instinctively reaching out to catch him, but they both ended up on the floor.
Eileenâs shoulder hit the floor hard, the impact sending a jolt of pain through her body. Her hand inadvertently brushed Milfordâs cheek. The heat radiating from his skin felt like a furnace blast, and Eileen yanked her hand back as if burned.
âWhat happened here?â a waiter barked, rushing over with another at the sound of the thud. They spotted Eileen and Milford sprawled on the floor together.
âDid he knock you down, miss?â the other waiter asked, his concern tinged with suspicion.
âAre you okay, miss?â the first waiter said, helping Eileen to her feet. âWeâre so sorry! This waiter here is still in college, a little clumsy, you knowâ¦â
âForget about me,â Eileen said through the pain, gesturing toward the unconscious Milford. âHe fainted. It must be a fever. We need to get him to a hospital now. My carâs out front. Help me get him in; Iâm taking him to the ER.â
Eileen pointed toward the parked car, urgency lacing her voice.
But a nervous waiter blocked her path. âHold on, lady! This is our employee, and we donât know you. We canât just let you leave with himâ¦â
Eileen spun around, her voice firm but edged with desperation. âHis nameâs Milford Murray, a freshman at Willowbrook University. He just turned eighteen. Heâs burning up. Every minute wasted could be serious. You donât want to be responsible for that, do you? If youâre still worried, you can send someone to come with me.â

âThanks for stepping up, maâam,â the manager mumbled, his eyes darting around. He then leaned in and whispered urgently to one of the waiters, âDidnât Milford leave his sisterâs number? Call her and tell her to go to the hospital.â
The waiter quickly scurried to make the call, phone clutched in his hand.
Bailee, frustrated after getting nothing but voicemails from Huey and Winona, walked back into the coffee shop. Her eyes widened at the sight of two waiters carrying Milford out, his face pale.
