Chapter 593:
Inside a small room, Bryan looked out the window, watching Eileen and Benjamin walk away in the distance. He could make out their figures huddled close together, their laughter faintly reaching his ears.
It was a long night. Bryan sat on the steps outside the house, bathed in the orange glow from the light above. He held a cigarette between his fingers, with several bottles of wine next to him. His gaze was empty.
Jacob and Josue had been standing at the yardâs gate, watching Bryan for a while. Leaning against the doorframe with his hands in his pockets, Jacob nudged Josue with his foot and suggested, âShould we try to talk to him?â
âHow do you suggest we do that?â Josue asked. âTell him heâs going to die someday and that itâs a blessing to see his wife remarry before then?â
Jacob coughed at Josueâs bluntness and cleared his throat. âIf I come across something that troubles me in the future, just keep your distance.â
Josueâs way of persuading someone was clearly not the most comforting.
From a distance, Jacob and Josue kept their eyes on Bryan, concerned about what he might do tonight.
Eileen couldnât sleep either. As she watched her daughter sleep, her mind was crowded with thoughts. She stared out the window at the moon in the sky.
After midnight, dark clouds gathered, strong winds began to blow, and soon, it started to rain heavily. Raindrops hit against the glass, and the wind was strong enough to snap branches, the sound echoing in the night.
Suddenly, there was a knock at Eileenâs door. She stood and opened it to find Benjamin, standing a good distance away.
âI just got a call from the airline. The flight tomorrow afternoon is canceled due to the strong wind and rain,â Benjamin said.
They couldnât leave?

Noticing her alert state, Benjamin asked, âHave you slept at all?â
âNo,â Eileen answered, shaking her head. âWith this storm, I canât sleep.â
âBut itâs only been stormy for thirty minutes, and itâs already half past two in the morning,â Benjamin pointed out. âJacob and Josue arenât here. Just be honest.â
It wasnât that she didnât want to be honest with Benjamin, but she kept picturing Bryan as he turned and walked away earlier that day. She was haunted by that image and still felt somewhat dazed.
âI donât think Bryan can have his wedding tomorrow,â Benjamin said. âSo you shouldnât feel too sad.â
âIâm not sad. In fact, not only am I not sad, but I will go and comfort them tomorrow,â Eileen said firmly.
Benjamin was left without words.
Eileen kept her word. The next day, the storm persisted for more than half the day. Forget about having a weddingâit was even challenging to step outside. Gabriela peered out the window at the pouring rain, chattering and eagerly wanting to go out and play in the water.
But with the rain continuing, Eileen had to entertain Gabriela inside, which was exhausting. Gabriela sometimes wanted to be held, and sometimes she demanded to go to the window to watch the rain. She would point outside occasionally.
