When Jack showed up at the Wright place, Jack found himself being politely told to get lost.
âMr. Luke isnât available for visitors,â the housekeeper said for the second time.
âI need to see him. Itâs an emergency.â
The housekeeper didnât seem all that dismayed. She just raised one supercilious eyebrow and asked, âAre you bleeding, sir?â
âNo.â
âIs someone else bleeding?â
Jack clenched his jaw. âNo.â
âThen this is not an emergency. Please schedule an appointment at a later timeââ
Jack pushed the front door open, causing the woman to gasp in outrage. He then yelled, âLuke! Luke, you bastard, I know youâre in here!â
A few other people came around various corners to stare at the crazy man yelling up the stairs. The housekeeper fluttered around Jack before hurrying to pick up one of the phones.
Jack wondered if sheâd call the police. Itâd take a half an hour just to get out here, and by then, he wouldâve found Luke.
Despite having been in the house before, Jack got lost more than once, losing valuable time. But then he recognized the hallway that Luke had led him down when heâd met with him that first time to talk about Gwen.
Jack walked into Lukeâs office to find his friend with a woman. Her back was turned, so Jack couldnât see her face. Luke had his arm around her waist. His expression was so intent on her that he didnât even notice his office door opening.
But the woman noticed. She looked over her shoulder, her eyes wide. It was then that Jack recognized her: it was Jocelyn Gray.
The trio stared at each other for a long moment. There was no noise except the sound of Jack shifting his weight and making the floorboards creak.
âOh!â Jocelyn practically sprang from Lukeâs grasp. âJack! Youâre here. On Hazel Island. In Lukeâs house.â She was speaking so quickly Jack could barely understand her. âYouâre here. Why are you here?â
Luke shot her a look. She shut up after that.
âYeah, Jack, why are you here?â said Luke. âThis is sudden.â
âI needed to talk with you.â
âYou have my number. You have a phone.â
âIn person.â
Right then, the housekeeper rushed into the office, panting like sheâd been running. âMr. Luke! Iâm so sorry! He wouldnât leave. I called the police, theyâre on their wayââ
Luke raised an eyebrow. âDid you accost the staff?â he said to Jack.
Jack crossed his arms. âThey wouldnât let me inside.â
âI wonder why.â To the housekeeper, he said, âMaggie, itâs fine. Jack here is just rough around the edges. Iâm sorry he was rude. Please let the police know they arenât needed.â
Maggie narrowed her eyes at Jack, unconvinced. Based on her expression, he was half-convinced sheâd happily place a curse on him for his behavior.
âI guess I should go, too,â said Jocelyn uneasily. She swallowed hard. âNice to see you, Jack.â
âLikewise.â
Jocelyn glanced over her shoulder at Luke, but he was looking at papers on his desk. Jack saw her shoulders slump as she followed Maggie down the hallway.
âClose the door, will you? And maybe lock it for good measure. Youâre not the first surprise guest Iâve had today.â
Although Jack was curious about Jocelyn and Luke, he had more pressing matters. âI need your help,â he said after shutting the door.
âI thought you were leaving the island for good? Iâm pretty sure you told me you were never coming back.â Luke sat down, putting his feet up on his desk.
Jack didnât sit. âI fucked up.â
âKeep going.â
Jack scowled. âI left because I thought it was better for everyone. I sold my boat; Iâm renting my house to Lyle now, too.â
âSo you came here to tell me that youâre homeless and unemployed?â
âI came here to ask you for a job.â Jack felt like his teeth would crumble in his mouth, he was gritting them so hard.
Luke stared at him. Putting his feet down, he peered up at his friend. âYou, Jack Benson? Are you asking for my ~help?â~
âIf youâre going to be a dick about it, Iâll go somewhere else. I have my pride too. Asshole.â
âCalling me an asshole is giving me less of a reason to help you.â
Jack wanted to deck his friend. Did Luke want him to go on his knees and beg? He refused. Heâd find work elsewhere. Heâd ask Lyle if he needed a hand. Surely there were enough odd jobs on the island he could support himself.
âI donât need this. I came here asking for help, and all you can do is mock me,â said Jack.
Luke sighed. âIâm not trying to mock you. Iâm just pissed off at you. Pissed that it took you this long to ask. Christ, man, I thought I was your friend.â
Jack stared. His anger melted away in a flash, and all he could feel in that moment was confusion.
âYou decided to leave the island without talking to anyone, not even me. You sold your boat when I refused to buy it. I kept waiting for you to ask, or to even tell me what was going on.
âBut you didnât. Jack Benson is an island, a man unto himself. He doesnât need anyone else in his life,â said Luke sadly.
Jack sat down. His knees felt wobbly. He suddenly felt very, very tired. âI didnât realize.â
âAnd worst of all, have you seen Gwen? Sheâs a ghost. She was heartbroken when you left. I thought of anyone in the world, you wouldâve told her. But I guess not.â
Jack put his face in his hands. Groaning, he just said, âFuck me.â
âI can give you a job, Jack. Or help you find one. I can even put you up in one of my apartments. Thatâs not a problem.â
Luke came around the other side of the desk and put his hand on Jackâs shoulder. âThatâs what friends do. I just wish you wouldâve asked me sooner.â
Jack hated feeling weak. Vulnerable. Yet at the same time, he felt almost peaceful, like a weight had been lifted from his shoulders.
âI need to find Gwen,â he said, his voice hoarse. âI can at least apologize to her. Even if she hates me forever.â
Luke was smiling sadly. âI doubt she hates you. If sheâll trust you again, well, thatâs another matter.â
As Jack thought over Lukeâs words, one question nagged at him. Since when did Luke Wright know so much about Gwen Parker?
âHow do you know about Gwen?â Jack tried to sound casual, but suspicion laced his voice anyway.
Luke just laughed at him. âJealous? Itâs a small town. Besides, Iâve seen her more than once to talk about her restaurant. Which is happening, you know. Iâm funding her. Since you gave her the ten grand even though youâre jobless, homeless, and honestly, you could use a shower, too.â
Jack snorted. âFuck off.â But after he gave himself a whiff, he grimaced. âCan I use your shower?â
âWhich one? We have ten to choose from.â
Even as Jack muttered, âEat shit,â he still gave his friend a hug.
* * *
Gwen was in one of the rooms upstairs, wiping down the bathroom counters. Three of the housekeeping staff had called in sick with the flu. Gwen had been vacuuming rooms and cleaning bathrooms all morning. Even Jocelyn had pitched in, stripping the beds and doing the laundry.
When theyâd been cleaning the room that had just been vacated by a newly married couple, Jocelyn had screeched, âRat! Oh my God, itâs a rat!â at the top of her lungs. Gwen had come running, only to discover that the rat was, in fact, a pair of gray boxer briefs. Gwen had laughed so hard that sheâd nearly peed her pants. Jocelyn had not found it so amusing.
When Gwen heard footsteps in the room, she assumed it was Jocelyn. âJocelyn, can you get me more bathroom cleaner?â she called. âIâm almost out.â
But a voice that was decidedly not Jocelynâs answered, âWhere do you keep it?â
Gwen whirled around. Jack stood there, his hands in his pockets, his expression unsure. His hair had grown out, and he was even sporting a bit of a beard.
âDo you want me to get you another bottle?â he said.
Gwen just shook her head. Her heart was pounding so hard that she felt dizzy. âWhat are you doing here?â
âI came back. I missed you, Gwen.â
Setting down her microfiber cloth and cleaner, Gwen washed her hands, trying to calm her swirling thoughts. Jack had returned. Heâd come back and heâd missed her.
~Donât get your hopes up. Heâs probably just saying hello.~
âYou missed me,â she repeated as she dried her hands.
âYeah.â
She gazed at him, standing there, looking so handsome in the morning sunlight that her chest hurt. She wanted to throw her arms around him. But she held back because heâd already told her that they couldnât be anything but friends.
âGwen.â
She looked up, and now he was only a few inches away from her.
âI should never have left like I did. Without telling you.â He reached out to touch her, but then his arm fell. âI thought itâd be better for everyone. I was trying to do the right thing.â
Her lower lip trembled. âThe right thing wouldâve been telling me instead of letting me find out about it.â
âI know. Shit, I know. I donât know what I was thinking. I guess I thought youâd get over it.â
She gaped at him. Now she wanted to wallop him upside his head. âIâd just get over it? Jesus, Jack! I tell you I love you, and you assume itâs just some fleeting emotion? That Iâll move on with some other guy soon enough? I donât know whether to be insulted that you think so badly of me or sad that you think so badly of yourself.â
âI wanted to protect you from me. My familyâmy mom has been calling me, needing money. She does this periodically. I didnât want to put all of that on you.â
âOh, Jack.â Gwen sighed. âEveryone has baggage. You know I have some of my own!â
âI was ashamed.â His voice was a whisper. âOr maybe I was afraid Iâd turn into her.â
Gwenâs heart broke. âNo matter what your mom did or has done, you are your own person. You make your choices. You arenât your parents. Nobody is.â
Jack took her hand, brushing his thumb across her palm. Then he was pulling her into his arms, hugging her so tightly she was breathless. But she didnât care. Burying her face in his shoulder, she inhaled his scent and reveled in his strength and warmth.
âI donât deserve you,â he was saying, âbut Iâll do whatever it takes to earn you.â
âEarn me? Iâm not a candy bar you save up for.â
That made him smile a little. âNo, youâre better. You showed me that I donât have to be alone for my entire life, that there are people worth loving. You make me want to be a better man.â
âLoving? Are you saying you love me?â
He touched her cheek. âLove you? I adore you. Youâre everything I never knew I needed, Gwen Parker.â
Then he finally, ~finally~, kissed her. It was a kiss that Gwen could feel from the top of her head all the way to her toes. It was a kiss that calmed all her fears, explained away all her doubts.
When Jack broke the kiss, he pressed his forehead to hers. âLuke is helping me find a job.â
âYou canât return to fishing?â
âI want to, but it wonât pay the bills. Not like it did.â
âI hate that you sold your boat. I know you did it for me. You shouldnât have. I couldâve found the money somewhere else.â
âI promised you that money. I want you to open your restaurant. Iâd do anything to make you happy.â His eyes were dark now. âAnything.â
Gwen had to kiss him again for that remark. They were so wrapped up in each other that they didnât hear Jocelyn enter the room. She finally had to clear her throat loudly at them.
âI take it you two made up?â she said, a smile on her face.
Gwenâs cheeks were red. âYes. Jackâs back for good.â
âExcellent. He can help us clean.â Jocelyn shoved a bucket of supplies into Jackâs hands. âMake yourself useful, Benson.â
After Jocelyn left, he laughed a little. âSheâs terrifying,â he said.
âOh, I know it.â
âDid I mention that she was at Lukeâs earlier today?â
Gwenâs eyes widened. âWhat? Tell me everything. Right now.â
And because he loved her and would do anything for her, Jack did as he was asked.
