Chapter 161
In other words, Yvetteâs little attempts to rebel were tolerable for now. But if she continued, there would come a time when Xavier would get tired, and then they wouldnât be able to stay together.
Yvette wasnât stupid; she understood what Mark was implying.
âMr. Xyrax, do you have a girlfriend? Or perhaps a wife?â Yvette asked.
Markâs narrow eyes under his goldârimmed glasses flickered slightly. âI have a fiancée.â
Mark felt somewhat helpless when he talked about his fiancée. They had met through a blind date and started dating, but the childish woman often threw tantrums.
Just because he had canceled plans due to work, she wanted to call off the marriage. It was as though she treated marriage like a joke.
âShe must like you a lot, right?â Yvette inquired.
Mark, much like Xavier, had never considered others feelings and treated people with cold indifference and sharp words. Yvette figured his fiancée must really like him; otherwise, she wouldnât want to marry him.
âWeâre compatible, thatâs all. I wouldnât say we like each other,â Mark replied.
âI hope you keep that mindset,â Yvette commented, then lowered her head to focus on her work.
Mark didnât understand what she meant, and he didnât pursue the conversation further.
After leaving the CEOâs office, he picked up his phone and saw a message from his fiancée.
âYouâre doing overtime again. Itâs always work! Why donât you marry the company? I donât want to be with you anymore.â
The veins at Markâs temples throbbed in frustration. âHere we go again. Keep throwing your tantrums,â he replied.
If she didnât want to marry him, so be it. It wasnât like he couldnât find someone else to marry. If he had known that she was so immature, he wouldnât have wasted time dating her in the first place.
Xavier and Claude only left the office around noon. Both men kept their expressions neutral, giving no indication of what they had discussed or how the conversation had gone.
Yvette was worried about Claude. With Xavier wielding significant influence in the country, many of Claudeâs projects had been stalled.
Claude immediately came to Yvette when he left Xavierâs office.
âLetâs have lunch together,â he suggested. He regretted not being able to celebrate her birthday with her yesterday.
Yvette glanced behind him.
âDonât worry, Xavier still has work to do. Also, didnât he say you should keep me company?â Claude reassured her, knowing her concerns.

âOkay.â Yvette quickly gathered her things and followed Claude out of the office.
As soon as they left, the secretaries outside the CEOâs office began to whisper among themselves. âWho exactly is this Ms. Snyder? Sheâs working in Mr. Laneâs office, but another big shot is taking her out.â
Most of them had been hired in the last few years. Xavier had high standards for those around him, and apart from Mark, no one had managed to stay by his side for an extended amount of time.
However, some senior employees recognized Yvette.
One woman with her arms crossed scoffed. âDoes no one here know her? Sheâs Mr. Laneâs exâwife.â
The moment she said that, a hush fell over the area.
âIsnât Mr. Laneâs exâwife supposed to be dead?â someone asked.
âWho knows how she came back to life?â the senior employee replied, waving her hand dismissively. â Alright, enough gossip. Get back to work.â
Even though she maintained a professional demeanor, she secretly harbored a strong dislike for Yvette.
In her opinion, Yvette, with her hearing impairment and lack of background or status, was unworthy of someone like Xavier. After all, even Xavierâs secretaries were expected to have impeccable backgrounds and extensive experience.
After emerging from the meeting room and learning that Yvette had left with Claude, Xavier didnât get angry. Instead, he had his bodyguard send him their location.
