Chapter 2: Chapter 1- The Battle

The emperor and the gladiatorWords: 3278

Hi! This is just a little note before you start the story but I will try to make it as historically accurate and as close to the films as I can! But I will be adapting it in different ways to fit Y/N's character :)

Y/N's Pov-

The sound of war shatters your soul in every way possible. I wasn't created for the sole purpose of putting a stop to this man-made hell but it certainly feels like i was as it is all I know. I was raised in a small North African town called Numidia and it has always felt like home to me. I knew from an early age however that I didn't fit in. I never have. The day I arrived i was terrified having been abandoned at such a young age but another small boy was in the same position as me. He was starved and his clothes were ragged but as soon as our eyes met, I felt this wave of peace which is something I hadn't felt in a long time. His name was Hanno and we have been best friends ever since.

Soldiers start to scramble all around, knocking me left to right until I got my bearings straight and I stand watching the roman boats as they gain speed at an increasingly alarming rate. Usually I am used to war as this is what I have trained my whole life for but this just feels so- different..  Hanno is our so called "general" so we always follow his orders and we always trust him with our lives. He stood in front of us with the usual glint in his eyes before shouting "Where we are death is not! Where death is we are not!"

Before I can even react, flaming stones are being catapulted above my head by ballistas. I need to move but I feel frozen to the spot. My eyes are glued to the boats and the romans aboard act like sirens trying to becon me out. Hanno has told me stories about the romans before and the death and destruction that followed them like the plague but this is just madness. I am finally woken out of my trance by a heavy arm that pulls me to the ground with force and arrows that quickly follow behind me. Hanno looks concerned and shakes me slightly. "Get your head in the game Y/N. We can't  do this without you". And before I knew it he was gone.

It wasn't long until the roman army found there way in especially with their general leading them. I draw my sword and wait eagerly until finally it is time. I charge forward into a small crowd of soldiers and fling my sword at them, turning sharply and plunging it into the side of their chest. One of them made a pass at my head which I narrowly manage to block with my shield and took a smaller dagger out of my shoe which I throw at a soldiers neck.

I am so distracted that I nearly dont hear the deafening scream of Hanno which made me immediately spin to face him not caring about my current surroundings. His wife, Arishat, was standing on the edge of the structure with the fletching of the arrow stuck out of her chest. My legs give in under me and I fall to my knees with a thundering sob. She was like a sister to me- my sister was now gone.. Before I knew it, a soldier hit me over the head with the back of his blade and the world suddenly fades black....

(This is my first time writing so please give me any feedback you may have! I hope you enjoyed the first chapter and I hope you want to read on as I have so many ideas for this story. Thank you for reading!)
