Jaxon pushed off the lockers and strolled over, his expression unreadable, but the tightness in his jaw told Lena he wasn't happy.
"What's going on?" he asked casually, though there was an edge to his voice.
Lena turned to him, shifting uncomfortably. "We were just talking."
Jaxon's gaze flicked between her and Ethan, his lips pressing into a firm line. "Yeah, I got that. Didn't look like just talking from where I was standing."
Ethan scoffed. "Oh, please. What, you're paranoid now? Afraid she's gonna change her mind?"
Jaxon took a step closer. "I don't know, should I be?"
Lena's stomach twisted. "Guys, stop. This is not happening right now."
Ethan let out a humorless laugh, shaking his head. "You know what? Forget it. I don't have the energy for this."
He turned to leave, but Jaxon grabbed his arm. "We're not done."
Ethan yanked his arm free. "Oh, I think we are."
Lena quickly stepped between them, pressing her hands against Jaxon's chest before this could turn into something way worse. "Jaxon, please don't do this."
His gaze locked onto hers, frustration flashing in his eyes. "I don't like the way he talks to you."
Ethan scoffed. "I don't like the way you exist right now, so I guess we're even."
Jaxon's jaw tensed, but Lena could feel the tension in his body start to ease beneath her touch. She softened her voice. "Come on. Not here."
Jaxon took a deep breath, exhaling slowly before taking a step back. "Fine."
Ethan, still fuming, shook his head. "Whatever. Do what you want. I don't care."
Lena felt her stomach sink as he walked away.
Jaxon turned back to her, still tense. "Why do I feel like I just made things worse?"
Lena let out a breath. "Because you definitely did."
Jaxon groaned, rubbing a hand down his face. "Great. Just what I needed today."
Lena sighed, glancing toward where Ethan had disappeared down the hall. "This is going to be a mess, isn't it?"
Jaxon huffed out a laugh. "Oh, Carter. It already is."
