On with da story~
~â¢~â¢~
I glared at his hand and imagined how it'll be if I have laser eyes. God, I wouldn't even be surprised if he's going to blow my cover one of these days. I seemed to be slipping out of my shy and nerdy character whenever I was around him.
"Sorry," Adam said, his arms slightly raised to show that he meant no harm as he stepped back to give me some space.
I nodded stiffly, wanting to get out of this place as quickly as I can. I could sense the hesitance as he set his eyes on anything but me. I was so close to snapping and just yell at him to spit it out so that I can bolt out of this place but before I could do so, he spoke up and gave me the biggest shock of the year.
"I wanted to ask you to a party on Friday, as my date."
My eyebrows shot up. Is this how they ask girls out these days? Momma always said something about daddy going to grampy's house before taking her anywhere. What happened to that chivalry?
"No." I said simply, shrugging and hitching my bag further up on my shoulder, ready to walk away.
He seemed to be expecting the rejection as he finally looked at me with a blank expression. Well, considering we weren't exactly on good terms in the first place, he couldn't have expected any other answer.
His expression morphed into one of determination and took a hold of my elbow before dragging me out of the building and around a corner.
I glared at the back of his head, letting him drag me as I tried to maintain my reputation as the shy nerd.
Why oh why couldn't looks kill. It'll do me a seriously great deal amount of favor.
He finally stopped walking and turned to face me. I tilted my head upwards, groaning lightly before facing him and throwing him the most menacing glare I could muster.
"Why can't you just leave me alone?" I whispered harshly at him.
He smiled cheekily at me and I saw the glint of mischief in his eyes. I narrowed my eyes suspiciously as a thought occurred to me, "Is this some kind of joke? Or maybe it's a test that you have to pass before you get to join the popular clique?"
He frowned, looking puzzled.
"What?" He asked, dumbfounded.
When I gave him a blank look, he shook his head and tried to coax me into going to the party again. "Come on, it'll be fun."
I sighed and looked him in the eye.
"Will this stop you from bothering me ever again?" I asked, not bothering to conceal the slight hopeful tone in my voice.
He grinned as he realized that he might have a chance in getting me to go with him to that stupid party.
"Only if you want me to," he dodged the question slyly. I snorted, earning myself a chuckle from him.
I groaned once I realized that my mind has already made a choice for me. I have a bad feeling at how this is going to end but I didn't have any plans anyways. I usually stayed in on Friday nights, watch Netflix while binge eating on ice cream. I guess a party wouldn't hurt.
"I won't let you walk away until you say yes," he taunted. I clicked my tongue to express my annoyance at him and scowled at him through the few strands of hair that fell over my face.
"Alright, I'll go," I sighed, caving in.
He fist pumped the air in excitement and I had to suppress the smile that was pulling at the ends of my lips. I held my pointer finger out to pause his victory dance.
"On one condition," I stated quickly, before he gets carried away.
His smile didn't falter at my words and he just stared at me expectantly as if nothing I say will drag his spirits down. "I get to use my normal day-to-day attire," I motioned to the baggy clothes I'm wearing. He grinned and his hand shot out for a handshake, "Deal."
I shook his hand and left the library, shaking my head lightly.
What the hell did I get myself into?
-----
I rushed into the house, kicking the door close and climbing up the stairs to my bedroom. I took a quick shower before putting on my pajamas and plopping down onto my bed. I pulled my laptop onto my lap before switching it on and going to youtube to listen to some music. I spent the next few hours working on assignments while listening to We The Kings on repeat.
I hum in content as I take a much needed break and stare out the window only to realize that it's already dark outside.
How long have I been sitting here?
I yawned, feeling exhausted all of a sudden, and stretch out my stiff limbs. I sigh in content as I listen to the satisfying cracks of my stiff back. I shut my laptop and move the books onto the spot beside me after piling them up. I kick the sheets off me and swing my feet over the edge of the bed.
I attempted to stand up from the bed but the next thing I know, my knees buckled underneath me and I lost my balance, my butt falling onto the bed again. My legs must've fallen asleep from sitting down for so long.
Bed, I know you love me but I need to cheat on you with food right now. I thought sullenly as I try to stand up again and hold onto the bed post for support. The stiffness soon goes away as I flexed my legs repeatedly.
I try to stand up on my own this time and when I succeeded, I exit my room and make my way towards the kitchen, ready to scavenge for any edible food.
I was half way down the stairs, treading down the steps slowly, trying not to put as much pressure on my steps since I don't know when my legs will decide to give up on me.
I hate when this happens, I'll sit for too long and won't notice the time but when I do notice it, it'll be too late and I'll end up with half functioning legs. Don't get me wrong, I love my legs, I just hate not being able to have 100% faith that it won't fail me after it falls asleep.
I huffed irritably and continued my painstakingly slow descend when I heard the front door open with a loud bang and a familiar voice echoed through the quiet house.
"Honey, I'm home!" My mother hollered. I didn't respond until I hear her shout, "I bought some pie and cookies!"
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how you get your teen children to rush down the stairs and welcome you home happily. That is if ravaging the bag of food you hold counts as welcoming.
"Well hello to you too," Mom greeted with an amused smile. "Anyway, your dad will be home soon, you know the drill." My parents are rarely home, he goes away for frequent business trips and is always busy but he makes up for it by making every night that he's home a movie night.
"Okay." Though my voice is muffled by all the pies and cookies I stuffed in my mouth, I know she heard me.
"Cassandra Rylie Johnson! What did I tell you about eating your food bit by bit?!" I looked at her sheepishly as she chided on. I tried swallowing the food but found my throat too dry to do so. "Ha! Now you can't swallow it! Serves you right!" My mom snickers. Yeah, mom. Feeling the love.
I roll my eyes at my dear mother, sipping a bit of water to help swallow the food. After I finally managed to swallow my food, I stuck my tongue out at her and ran to my room to change out of my pajamas.
"Real mature, Case. Real mature!" She yelled at me. In response, I cackled. Yes, I cackled. Problem?
Putting on an oversized tee with a Harry Potter quote on it and a pair of skinny jeans, I checked myself on the mirror to at least make myself look decent. My dad, unlike my mom, never had a problem with my non-existent fashion sense. Heck, he went ballistic when I was a kid for using a pair of very short shorts.
Never again. Even the thought of using another pair of those pants makes me shudder. What I was thinking as a kid will never cease to amaze me.
"Girls, you ready to go?" My dad's voice echoed through the house. I applied a small amount of perfume and deodorant before skipping down the stairs and hugged my dad.
"Aw, I miss you, princess." I snuggled into my dad's embrace, "I miss you too, daddy." Yes, I'm a daddy's little girl.
We made our way to the car, buckling up and driving to the movies. On the way, Eye of the Tiger came on and my dad and I belted out the lyrics to the song. My mom shook her head at our off-key singing and we laughed at her for being so uptight.
I looked at my parents from my seat, at the back of the car, for a moment. I'm happy just by being here but even now, with smiles and laughter surrounding me, I know we were missing something.
My thoughts fled to all the times when there was someone to take mom's side in these kind of situations, when a certain boy would bicker with me in the back of the car; earning us a stern glare from Mom for our incessant yelling.
I knew that my family can never be complete without my brother.
With that thought, my grin slowly slipped from my face and I turned to gaze out the window, watching as the trees whiz by in a blur.
I miss you, Bry.
