In a lampless dusk, we traveled a dirt path that stretched on forever. Boney branches punctured the moonlit sky, casting ragged shadows that tattooed the sides of the road, while trees drifted past us.
In the midst of the chaos, I stood watching my world crumbling around me having nowhere to run or hide from the debris. I would cry, but the grumpy werewolf that drove would occasionally growl at the slightest sound I'd make, so I rested my head against the window, watching the world carry on.
The frosty night air bit into my skin, fueling the ache that had captured my heart. At least now I could confirm the very thing I feared to admit, and that was, it always boiled down to me always being alone.
"Hey" I called. "Can we stop for a while, I need to pee"
My statement was followed by a prolonged moment of silence. I knew he heard me, not because of his super hearing abilities but because I sat right behind his seat.
"Hey! I said I want to pee and while I'm not sure if your ears are working, I'm sure as hell know your nose works. And so help me God I'll pee all over this car if you don't stop" I raged and the car came to a screeching halt.
He exited the car, coming around to the door closest to me and flinging it open. I got out eager to go but gripping onto my arm as I was passing him.
"No funny business" He drawled out, yet as soon as he opened his mouth I snapped my head away from him, after involuntarily getting a whiff of his foul breath.
"Whatever" I countered, wringing out of his grasp and annoyed that he had stopped me just to say that. "I didn't plan on doing anything, anyway"
I shivered, slowly feeling myself getting enveloped by the blanketed forest, and at last, finding a big enough tree where I hid and did my womanly duties. Begrudgingly, as I walked back, I couldn't help but pause, looking back at where I was mere moments ago.
'You could be free' the trees whispered.
'We can help you', they urged, and I sighed in defeat, for it was nothing but a fool's errand. I was neither a beast of the night nor an entity of the forest and the faster I'd run, the quicker I'd be hunted down.
I turned with the intention of heading back, only to be faced with the unpleasant werewolf. My legs moved without thought, jumping a foot or two, creating a distance between me and the new presence before saying.
" I- I was just heading back" I stated in a calculated voice, wondering how long he was standing there.
"There is no need to rush, take your time, we're almost there anyway" he spoke yet something about his oddly calm demeanor and pleasant approach threw me off. Did he have some sort of split personality? This couldn't be the same grumpy werewolf that drove me here.
I waited in a sort of bated breath, as his watchful gaze filled me with an anxious feeling.
"Uh- sure, I'll be waiting by the car then" I answered, side-stepping him but also keeping a sharp eye out in case he made any sudden movements, and I must've been lucky because no sooner had I moved, I saw his hand shot out, reaching to grab me as I was about to pass him.
"What are you doing?" I asked panicked, only after dodging his attack. He turned and it was only then I saw his barbarous smile that stretched from one ear all the way to the other. "Don't you dare try touching me without my consent" I added angrily taking small steps back.
"Don't even bother to burden yourself with running sweetheart" He chuckled, a sinister one. "I'll catch you before you can count to five" Dread held an iron fist around my throat, and tiny imaginary spiders crept up my spine.
At that moment panic flooded my veins like wildfire. Something inside of me told me his mind had gone down a route I wouldn't dare encounter yet I hoped that it was only fleeting thought and nothing else.
"Come any closer and I swear to God I'll scream. If I'm not mistaken Cyrus and the others are waiting for us, and I'm pretty certain they'll hear my cry for help and no sooner they'll be on your ass. So think again buddy-boy" I stated atop of my voice
"You're wrong, the rest are at least 20 minutes ahead by now, but I do admire how confident you are...so confident yet so unaware and stupid". He remarked, pausing and looking me up and down like a lazy predator. "A useless burden I would say...I bet it won't be that much of a hassle when she finally comes to take what rightfully belongs to her"
My brows knitted together and I stopped short in my tracks at his admission. I should have found his rant nonsensical but there was a nagging at the back of my brain that told me not to take this lightly.
First Primrose then him, they couldn't be talking about the same person, could they?
"I do- don't understand-
" And she's coming all right" He confessed, and I felt a pressure building up in my ears when his stature appeared to get bigger and taller in front of me. "Beware, my dear Sky- for you shall stir in the pot of mishaps, and wonder the wastelands of gloom and suffering. You will scream then realize you have no voice, because from this point on, her only gift to you will be a frightening tale of terror"
A drop of sweat traveled down my spine despite the frigid air and my throat ran dry when I processed his words. For a moment I couldn't think straight, words and thoughts twisted in my brain until I felt a headache.
"But before that, I'll have my way with you first"
He lunged after me, but in an instant, a burst of adrenaline surged through me in time to evade his attack. From behind, I heard when he cursed but then gathered his footing to chase after me as I ran towards the roads.
Yet my advances to escape quickly plummeted when he tackled me from behind, and the both of us tumbled to the ground with him on top of me.
"NO!" I screamed wringing myself out of his attempts to pin me down. "HELP ME!" I shouted, even with knowing no one was going to come to my rescue but I just couldn't allow some sick, twisted man to have his way with me.
I wasn't his property, or anyone's property as a matter of fact and I wasn't going to give up without a fight- even if it got me killed. One of my hands got loose, and I took the opportunity to reach out and grab a rock I had glimpsed as we fell, bashing it as hard as I could against his skull- drawing blood.
"You bitch!" he roared from above me, turning his attention from me to nurse his wound, and I used the chance to roll from underneath him. However, as I was getting up to turn and run once more, I felt his meaty fingers tangling themselves in my hair, yanking me to face him.
Tears threatened my eyes in that instant and a feeling of dread nudged my spine when I saw his eyes. They were dark bottomless pits, in fact, as they glared back at me, I had silently prayed to see a soul, but to my dismay- there was none.
In the next few moments that followed, the back of his hand made contact with the right side of my face, tilting my world as I dropped to the ground. My vision felt hazy and I felt blood spewing from my nose while he fidgeted with his buckle behind me.
A half-strangled sob escaped from my chest as I crawled away with aching limbs. My heart burned with the need for an escape yet I was just a strand away from falling apart and succumbing to an undeserving fate.
But, as I peered through the darkened forest, I noticed something very odd and out of the ordinary. Among the trees it stood, and the longer I looked, the more I was able to see the outline of a shadowed person.
It moved its head to the side at an abnormal angle looking from me to the werewolf behind me, and even though I wasn't able to make out a face, I could tell it was a little pissed when I heard a chilling snarl come from its direction.
I got up, standing on my two feet with my eyes popping and nerves creeping up my spine. Had he not heard that?
From, behind me I heard his boots taking quick steps toward me, and the closer he came, the more I could make out the person was a woman, as she emerged from the trees. The temperature was growing colder and colder and for some reason, I could tell something terrible was going to happen
Her matted hair formed a filthy veil that concealed part of her face the closer she got, and my mind raced when I detected he had not seen her. I took a step back feeling a sudden sickening sensation in the pit of my belly.
"Got you" He taunted, grabbing my arm, and before I could try and escape, out of nowhere a huge log flew through the air hitting him in the stomach and slamming him against a tree.
I heard a nauseating crunch when the log came in contact with his body and my mouth ran dry when I saw no signs of movement from where he was pinned down with blood running from his mouth.
Was he dead?
I stood almost frozen in a completely catatonic state staring at the unworldly sight of the woman who stood center of the chaos almost like an avenging angel. White plumes of vapor escaped from her mouth as she exhaled in a low rumbling growl and my breathing grew ragged when she slowly was about to face me.
'Was I next?'
"SKYLER!" Cyrus called desperately in the distance but I couldn't seem to answer. As the figure turned to me, I shuddered at the sight of her chest. There was a gaping hole in the area where her heart should have been.
I felt myself sway- losing my equilibrium. The muscles in my legs turned to jelly and I dropped to the ground feeling my lids get heavy and only catching a glimpse of her shadowed face before she vanished when I saw Cyrus and the others running toward me.
"Oh my God Sky- what happened?" He asked panicked dropping to his knees, taking my face into his hands, scanning frantically for injuries. I didn't answer. I felt as if I had lost my breath along with my voice.
Despite all that had happened, my eyes wandered to see Frederic standing silently taking in the aftermath of the event, while the other werewolf that was with him ran to remove the ginormous log that their partner was trapped under.
I saw all the wheels turning in his head and I stilled when he looked from the unconscious wolf then back to me in an almost studying manner, knowing almost all the thoughts that were running through his head.
My attention snapped back to Cyrus when he lifted me in his arms and began to take me away from the scene yet as we distanced ourselves I looked back to see Frederic's gaze burning through me. And that could only mean one thing- he knew something was up with me.
