Chapter 27: 23. Darshil's other side

Darshil chuckles lightly on Daksh's conversations, but the warmth in his expression fades as the villa comes into view. It’s an imposing structure, isolated from the rest of the world, and it’s here that Darshil is about to face the real reason for his visit—a mission that could cost him everything.

As they pull up to the villa, Darshil’s demeanor shifts. He straightens his shoulders, his expression hardening into the cold, calculating look that he’s known for in the underworld. This is a different side of him—a side that even Aarvi hasn’t fully seen.

Inside the villa, they are greeted by heavy security. Men in sharp suits with cold, unblinking eyes stand at attention, their hands resting on the butts of concealed firearms. The air is thick with tension, the kind that only comes when men with too much power and too little conscience gather in one place.

Darshil's mind is still racing on Aarvi but now, as his feet touch Italian soil, he knows it’s time to shift gears. Here, in Italy, he isn’t just a businessman—he’s the mafia boss, the leader of a shadowy empire that controls a network far more dangerous than anyone could imagine.A man dressed in tailored suit step out and greet Darshil and Daksh with a respectful nod.

Boss, welcome back. Luca said

Luca. It's good to be here. Darshil said

They both exchange a firm handshake with Luca.

They’re expecting us. Let’s get this over with. Daksh said in a low voice.

We will meet them now, but remember, what our plan is. We have to just pretend to be on their side. Darshil said

Daksh nods, and they are escorted into a dimly lit room where a group of men are already seated around a large table. At the head of the table is Vittorio De Luca, a famous gangster of Italy one of the most dangerous men in Europe. His presence commands the room, his sharp eyes scrutinizing every move.

Darshil, Daksh. Welcome to Italy. Vittorio said, leaning back on his chair.

Vittorio, it's been a while. Darshil said

and both of them takes their seat.

Too long my freind..... I heard you've been busy in India, expanding your empire. But, don't forget..... A Mafia king should never be so busy in a particular thing. Vittorio said

Don't worry about it. And now, we have an unfinished business to finish here. Darshil said with a dangerous smirk.

Vittorio nods.

Indeed, the gold. Vittorio said

At the mention of gold, the mood in the room shifts. The other men at the table lean in, their interest piqued. This is what they've been waiting for-the real reason behind Darshil's sudden trip to Italy.

Yes. Daksh said

As you know, we've been tracking the shipment for months. The gold is hidden somewhere in the city, but the authorities are closing in. We need to move fast. Vittorio said

What's the plan? Darshil asked

We'll use our contacts in the police to create a diversion. While they're distracted, your men will secure the gold and get it out of the city. It's risky, but the reward is worth it. Vittorio said

And what about the Italians? They won't just let us walk out with their treasure. Daksh said thoughtfully

That's where it gets dangerous. The Italian syndicates are on high alert, and they're not afraid to spill blood to protect what's theirs. If you're caught, there will be no negotiations, no second chances. Vittorio said

The gravity of the situation sinks in. This isn't just a business deal-it's a high-stakes game where one wrong move could lead to a war.

We'll need a clean escape route. Something the authorities won't expect. Darshil said in a calm tone.

Already arranged. A private tunnel leads from the safe house to the coast. From there, you'll be taken by boat to a secure location. But timing is crucial. Delay even by a minute, and the whole operation could collapse. Vittorio said

Darshil nods, his mind already working through the logistics. This mission is dangerous, even more so than the usual deals he's used to. But he knows that backing down isn't an option. The stakes are too high.

One more thing, Darshil. If anything goes wrong, there will be no help. You're on your own. Do you understand? Vittorio said leaning forward.

I understand...... Darshil said

The room is silent, the weight of the conversation hanging heavy in the air. Darshil can feel the tension in his muscles, the adrenaline starting to kick in. But beneath it all, there's a small part of him that wishes he could just walk away, go back to his family, and leave this dangerous world behind.

But that's not who he is. He's made his choices, and now he has to live with them.

When do we move? Daksh asked

In 4 days, be ready. Vittorio said

Darshil and Daksh exchange a glance, their unspoken understanding clear. They're in this together, for bear or worse.

After the meeting, Darshil and Daksh moves back to the villa.

MUMBAI:

The late afternoon sun filtered through the windows of the house, casting long shadows over the living room. Aarvi sat by the window, a book in her lap, but her mind was far from the words on the page. The ticking of the clock seemed louder in the empty house, echoing in the silence that had settled over everything since Darshil left for Italy.

She absentmindedly turned the page, though she hadn’t read a single word. Her thoughts kept drifting to Darshil, and no matter how hard she tried to push them away, they always found their way back to him.

It’s been 5 days since Darshil left for Italy, but his absence felt heavier than she expected. The house felt...lonely. She sighed, closing the book and staring out at the garden. Ruhi and Poorva were out for the day, and Nandini was resting in her room.

Why do I miss him? After everything he’s done… after everything I’ve felt? I should be relieved he’s not here. I should be happy to have space, to breathe... Aarvi thinks

But she wasn’t relieved. Despite her mixed feelings toward Darshil—his obsessive love, their forceful marriage, the moments of fear she had felt in his presence—she couldn’t deny the pull he had on her.

Aarvi shifted in her seat, her fingers lightly tracing the edge of her book. Memories of the last few weeks flooded her mind. The way Darshil had looked at her during the royal party in Jaipur, how he held her during their salsa dance, his intense gaze when they were alone in their room. His touch, though once terrifying, had slowly become familiar, even comforting at times.

She found herself wondering what he was doing right now. Was he thinking about her? Was he safe? She hated that she cared so much. It wasn’t supposed to be like this. She was supposed to despise him for the way he had forced her into this life, yet here she was, missing him.

How did it come to this? How did he become such an integral part of my life? Aarvi said

She sighed again, placing the cup down with more force than intended.

This is ridiculous. I shouldn’t be missing him. I hate him... don’t I? Aarvi said softly.

She then glanced at the clock, wondering what time it was in Italy. He had told her he would call, but she hadn’t heard from him yet. She didn’t want to admit it, but she was anxiously waiting for that call. She wanted to hear his voice, to know he was okay.

ITALY:

So..... What now? Let's go for our plan. Daksh said

Darshil nods.

Luca, prepare everyone for the meeting. I want everyone at the meeting area in next 15 minutes. Darshil said

Luca nods and walks towards the outside gate.

After 5 minutes Darshil & Daksh walks out of the villa and Luca gestures toward the car. The group climbs inside, and the car speeds away toward the city.

The hideout is hidden beneath the façade of an old, abandoned factory. The interior, however, is anything but dilapidated. The underground lair is equipped with high-tech security, state-of-the-art weaponry, and a lavish meeting room where Darshil’s mafia members await him.

As Darshil enters the room, the atmosphere changes. Every man in the room straightens up, their eyes focused on their leader. The weight of his authority is palpable, and the men know better than to waste his time.

Capo, it's an honor to see you again. Enzo, volunteer of one of the gang member, said.

Let’s get to business. Darshil said

He takes his seat at the head of the long table, Daksh sitting beside him. Enzo, Luca, and the other lieutenants gather around, their faces serious. Darshil’s expression remains cold, his mind now fully focused on the task at hand. Enzo pulls out a map.

We’ve received confirmation that the shipment has arrived. The gold is hidden beneath the ruins near Pompeii, just as planned. But the authorities are closing in. We’ve got intel that they’re searching the area. Enzo said

How much time do we have before they find it? Darshil asked

Not long, Boss. The local police are sniffing around, but more worrying is the interest from the Carabinieri. They're not just looking for the gold—they want to take down our entire operation. Luca said

Darshil’s eyes narrow as he studies the map, his mind racing with possibilities.

We need to act fast, Darshil. If the Vittorio get their hands on that gold, we’ll be looking at more than just lost profits. It’ll expose the entire network. Daksh said

Darshil leans back in his chair, fingers tapping lightly against the table. His eyes flick to Enzo.

We’re not going to let that happen. Have the men on standby. We’ll retrieve the gold before dawn tomorrow. Darshil said

Capo, there’s another complication. The Italians—the Rossi family—they’re making moves. Word on the street is they want a piece of the gold for themselves. Enzo said

Darshil’s jaw tightens. The Rossi family has been a thorn in his side for years, always looking for a way to undermine his operations in Italy. But he’s not the type to back down from a challenge.

If the Rossi family thinks they can take what’s mine, they’re mistaken. We’ll deal with them after the mission. Make sure our men are ready to intercept them if necessary. Darshil said

The room falls silent, the tension thick in the air. Darshil’s eyes sweep across his lieutenants, ensuring they understand the gravity of the situation.

This isn’t just about the gold, is it? Daksh said to Darshil

Darshil doesn’t respond immediately, his mind calculating every possible outcome.

No. This is about control. We can’t afford to show any weakness—not here, not in Italy. Darshil said

He stands, the room falling silent as he addresses his men.

We move at dawn. I want the gold secured and out of Italy before anyone can track us. If the Rossi family interferes, take them down. No loose ends. Darshil said

The men nod, understanding the weight of their leader’s command. As they disperse to prepare for the mission, Darshil and Daksh remain behind in the meeting room.

You really are playing a dangerous game, Darshil. Daksh said grinning slightly

That’s the only game I know how to play. Darshil said with a smirk

But, I noticed your soft side also. Daksh said

Maybe. But don’t forget—I’m still the boss. Darshil said grinning.

The evening sun casts a golden glow over Rome as Darshil stands by the floor-to-ceiling windows of his Villa. The view is breathtaking—the ancient city blending seamlessly with modern architecture. Yet, Darshil feels none of its allure. His mind is far from Italy, far from the meetings and missions that have consumed his days.

He takes a deep breath, leaning his hand against the cool glass. His thoughts drift to Mumbai—more specifically, to Aarvi. The way she laughed, the way she danced during the celebration in Jaipur, the softness of her gaze when they were alone. The memory of that accidental kiss lingers in his mind, and he can’t shake the feeling of longing that has settled deep in his chest.

••••••••••••

Back in Mumbai,

The bustling mall is alive with people, the sound of chatter and laughter filling the air. Aarvi, Poorva, Ruhi, and Shiv make their way through the corridors, exploring the different shops. Ruhi skips ahead, excitedly pointing at the store displays, her innocent energy infectious.

Aarvi smiles as she watches Ruhi’s excitement. Poorva walks beside her, dressed in a casual yet elegant outfit, while Shiv lingers slightly behind, his gaze often drifting to Poorva with a look of quiet admiration.

They stop outside a high-end boutique, and Ruhi tugs on Aarvi’s hand.

Chachi, look at that dress! Can I try it on? Ruhi asked excitedly

Of course, sweetheart. Let’s go inside and see if they have your size. Aarvi said after laughing.

They enter the store, and the group begins browsing through the clothes. Aarvi and Poorva focus on finding something cute for Ruhi, while Shiv quietly watches, always near Poorva but never too close.

He glances at Poorva.

Poorva, do you think Ruhi would like this? Shiv said (He holds up a dress with a playful design.)

That’s adorable! She’ll love it. Poorva said with a smile.

As she says this, their hands brush briefly while she takes the dress from him to show Aarvi. The touch is electric for Shiv, but he quickly pulls his hand back, not wanting to make her uncomfortable. Poorva doesn’t seem to notice, but Shiv feels his heart skip a beat. He’s always careful around her, never wanting to push too far.

Ruhi tries on the dress, twirling in front of the mirror as everyone admires how cute she looks. Aarvi takes out her phone to snap a few pictures.

Aarvi laughs.

You look like a little princess, Ruhi! Aarvi said

Ruhi grins.

I want to wear this today! Ruhi said

You’ll be the star of the mall with that dress on. Poorva said

While Aarvi helps Ruhi change back, Poorva and Shiv step outside the store to give them some space. They stand by the shop window, the atmosphere between them light but with an underlying tension. Shiv tries to think of something to say, anything to break the silence, but his usual confidence falters around her.

You’ve always been so good with Ruhi. She really looks up to you. Shiv said

I love spending time with her. She’s like my little shadow. But it’s Aarvi who’s really amazing with her. Poorva said with a smile

There’s a brief silence, and Shiv glances at Poorva. Her face is radiant in the soft mall lighting, and he feels that familiar feeling again.

You’re pretty amazing too, Poorva. You always have been. Shiv said

Poorva turns to look at him, slightly caught off guard by his tone. There’s something in his voice she hasn’t noticed before, something more than just friendship. But before she can respond, Aarvi and Ruhi step out of the store, breaking the moment.

Alright, all set! Shall we grab some ice cream? Aarvi said cheerfully.

Yes! Ice cream! Ruhi said, bouncing with excitement

They head toward the food court, and Shiv falls into step beside Poorva again. He wants to say more, to express how he feels, but the words won’t come. He knows this isn’t the time, and maybe it never will be. Still, he can’t stop himself from showing his care in little ways—offering to carry her bags, staying close by, making sure she’s comfortable.

As they sit down with their ice cream, Ruhi happily chatting away, Aarvi watches Shiv and Poorva with a knowing smile. Poorva, blissfully unaware, focuses on Ruhi’s stories, enjoying the day without realizing the emotional undercurrent running just beneath the surface

Maybe one day..... Shiv mumbles

Poorva looks over at him, raising an eyebrow.

Did you say something? Poorva asked

Uh, nothing. Just thinking. Shiv said

He gives her a small, sheepish smile, and she returns it, still unaware of the depth behind his words.

As they finish their ice creams, Ruhi tugs at Poorva’s hand, asking her to take her to the toy store, and Poorva obliges. Shiv watches them walk ahead, his heart heavy with unspoken words but content, for now, to simply be by her side.
