Anonymous POV:
Evelyn leaned back in the oversized armchair of a luxurious hotel suite, a glass of wine in her hand as she stared out the window at the bustling cityscape below. The lights of Paris glittered like stars, but even the beauty of the city couldnât distract her.
She pressed her phone against her ear, her best friend Amariâs voice breaking the silence. âOkay, but why are you obsessing over her? I thought you donât do attachment.â
âI donât,â Evelyn replied, swirling her wine absently. âItâs not attachment. Itâs... curiosity.â
âCuriosity?â Amariâs laugh was rich and skeptical. âGirl, please. Youâre hooked. Youâre not even trying to hide it.â
Evelyn sighed, tipping her head back against the chair. âI donât know. Maybe I just want to see her again. Thatâs not a crime, is it? I mean, she was... intoxicating.â
âWhich one?â Amari teased. âThe wife, or the one you canât stop thinking about?â
Evelyn hesitated, biting her lip. âTiana,â she admitted softly. âThere was something about her. Sheâs... different. Sweet, but with a quiet strength. And the way she looked at me... I canât explain it.â
âWow. You sound like youâre describing the love of your life.â
âOh, shut up,â Evelyn snapped, though there was no real bite in her tone.
âIâm serious,â Amari said. âYouâre in love.â
âIâm not in love,â Evelyn said firmly, sitting up straight. âI donât even believe in love, you know that. Iâm just... I donât know, maybe I just need to... be with her. Alone. Get it out of my system.â
âUh-huh. Sure. Thatâs what you want to believe.â
âYouâre delusional.â
âNope. I think youâre in denial,â Amari countered, her tone light but laced with truth.
Evelyn groaned, setting her glass down on the side table. The conversation was getting under her skin, and she didnât like it. But even as she rolled her eyes at Amariâs words, she couldnât stop the images of Tiana from flashing in her mindâher smile, her laugh, the way she seemed to radiate warmth.
âWhatever,â Evelyn muttered. âItâs not love. Itâs just... unfinished business.â
âUnfinished business?â Amari repeated with a snort. âOkay, then why havenât you talked to her? Youâre on Instagram, arenât you? Why not just DM her?â
âShe barely replies,â Evelyn admitted, her voice quieter now. âSheâs probably busy, or... I donât know. Maybe she doesnât want to talk to me.â
Amari was silent for a moment before she spoke again, her tone softer. âOr maybe somethingâs going on. You donât know her situation, Evelyn. If you really care about her, maybe you should find out.â
Evelynâs gaze drifted back to the city outside. The thought had crossed her mind more than onceâto stop waiting for Instagram replies and take matters into her own hands.
âMaybe I should,â she murmured. âI could ask around. See where she lives, fly out there. Just to check in, you know?â
âCheck in? Sure, letâs call it that,â Amari said, her tone teasing again.
But then her voice turned serious. âWhat about her wife, though? Donât you think youâre going to be ruining their marriage by just popping up?â
Evelyn stiffened. âAshantii?â she said, almost spitting the name. âMaybe. But I can see right through her and I've seen how she acts. Controlling. Overbearing. She doesnât deserve someone like Tiana.â
âAnd you do?â Amari asked pointedly.
Evelyn exhaled sharply, annoyed at the question. âThis isnât about deserving. Itâs about... I donât know. Making sure Tianaâs okay. I canât shake the feeling that sheâs not.â
Amariâs laugh was dry. âRight. Youâre flying across the world out of the goodness of your heart. Youâre still hung up on her, Evelyn, and youâre looking for any excuse to justify it.â
âThink what you want,â Evelyn said flatly. âBut Iâm going to do it.â
âFine,â Amari said, her tone laced with exasperation. âBut donât say I didnât warn you. If youâre not careful, youâre going to make everything worse.â
Evelyn didnât respond. Her mind was already made up. She couldnât shake the pull she felt toward Tiana, and the more she tried to ignore it, the stronger it became.
She leaned back in her chair, her thoughts filled with Tianaâs face. It wasnât love. It couldnât be.
But deep down, she knew Amari was right about one thing: she wasnât ready to let Tiana go. And she didnât plan to.
