The room stood in stunned silence as Robert observed them with his arms crossed, Alasdair just behind him. Baylenâs sapphire eyes never wavered from Robertâs dark ones as he waited for an acknowledgement.
After an eternity, Robert dropped his head to his chest with an exasperated sigh. âBaylen, you canât just ethervesce into the AIDO whenever you damn well feel like it!â
Declan swore in disbelief.
Baylenâs expression didnât change. âI know.â
âWell?â Robert threw out his hands with impatient irritation. âWhat are you doing here then?â
Baylen nodded to Kitara without a word.
âStars,â the High Engineer muttered.
âYou know him?â Storm asked, wide-eyed.
âUnfortunately.â
âCouncilor, I donât understand,â Alasdair said from behind him.
âThat makes all of us!â Declan exclaimed.
âThe library office is not the best place for this discussion,â Robert muttered. âIf anyone walks inââ
âI would have disappeared already,â Baylen reassured him. âBut since it was youâ¦â
âWe are in the middle of a critical level emergency, Baylen.â
âAnd yetâ¦here we are.â
âSomebody fucking explain, right the fuck now, or I will start arresting people,â Declan growled.
âStand down, Captain,â Robert said. âBaylen isâ¦not a threat. But we need to move somewhere else.â
âMy quarters,â Storm volunteered. âThereâs enough room for us all.â
âFind Zayne,â Declan snapped. âIâm not doing this without a fucking diplomat.â
Robert massaged the bridge of his nose. âItâs always the four of you. Starsâ¦â He frowned at Baylen. âGo with them. Iâll get Zayne. I donât have time to figure out how you circumvented my shields. Again.â
Kitara and Storm exchanged a wide-eyed look.
Again? Storm mouthed, and Kitara shrugged.
Thus they found themselves in Stormâs quarters, following a brief but heated debate about Baylen striding across the lobby in plain view.
Baylen, for his part, seemed unfazed by the others discussing him like he wasnât present. Kitara, still reeling from his revelations, struggled to piece together their conversations over the last several months. Declan still looked ready to shoot somebody, and Devika had pulled Alasdair aside to explain. Storm sent his broadsword back into the ether, but his narrowed gaze never left the Netherlingâs face, nor did he leave Kitaraâs side.
When Robert returned with Zayne, the air hung thick with palpable tension. âIâm starting to regret wanting to know what youâve been doing,â the Ambassador sighed.
âJoin the club,â Alasdair muttered.
None of them sat, instead standing around Stormâs vast living room wearing expressions of varying suspicion and confusion.
âExplain.â Declan motioned between Robert and Baylen. âNo offense Councilor, but this is not a good look for you.â
The Fallenâs eyes narrowed. âConsidering I donât fully understand the reason heâs here, Baylen should probably start.â
They all turned expectantly to the white-haired immortal standing with deceptively casual posture in the middle of the room.
âYouâre myâ¦cousin,â Kitara said before he could take a breath. âIâm struggling to wrap my mind around that. Howââ she choked on the word, composed herself, then tried again. âHow could you have betrayed us? Your own family?â
âI didnât know, Kitara,â Baylen replied. âYou must believe me. I said it beforeâI didnât believe I had family beyond Shyamal; I was too young to know any different when he took me. For the longest time, I didnât even know I was his flesh and blood. I thought I was one of the immortals heâd captured to use as lab rats.
âHe experimented with my geneticsâhis genetics. He thought if he could extract his DNAâ¦he could restore himself. When that didnât work, he molded me into somethingâ¦monstrous. His plan for me was all Iâd ever known. For the better part of several centuries, I sought nothing beyond his approval.â
Storm grimaced in reluctant understanding.
Baylen continued. âWhen he told me to track an enemyâsomething heâd ordered many times beforeâI didnât think anything of it. Once I found out, Kitara, I swear to youâit nearly destroyed me. I did everything in my power to stop it, but it wasnât enough.â
âAndâ¦after?â
A dark expression crossed the Netherlingâs face. âI developed a network free of Shyamalâs influence and had him assassinated within ten years. I spent the next several decades trying to find out what happened to you. Whenever I learned of a freshly Felled Valëtyrian, I sought them out.â
âAnd thatâs how you two know each other?â Declan asked, peering suspiciously between him and Robert.
Baylen gestured for the Councilor to continue.
Robert sighed. âI was newly exiled. Disoriented, adrift. I didnât know how to beâ¦inhuman in a human world, or immortal without immortality. As Baylen said, he found me, but unlike many others, he didnât try to convince me to become Valorn. I learned to trust himââ The Fallen scowled in the Netherlingâs direction. ââand I shouldnât have. Butâ¦he probably saved my life.â
âSo which is it; you trust him, or you donât?â Declan asked, still frowning.
âI trust he has no quarrel with the AIDO. Thatâsâ¦about as much as I can.â
Baylenâs expression betrayed no regret for using the Fallen Councilor nor dismay at the distrust Robert displayed. âIâd venture Iâve done enough to prove that much.â
âLandon,â Kitara muttered. âBut he wasnât really your source.â
âCorrect.â
âDid he find you, or did you find him?â
âHe found me, much the same way you tried to, but by offering classified AIDO intel, including the location of the silverblood in Cairo, the identity of your High Sleeper, and the best ways to circumvent AIDO security at any facility except headquarters.â
Kitara inhaled sharply. âHe told you about Saoirse?â she rasped.
Baylen nodded once. âHe also admitted to dealing in the blood trade. Itâs how he worked his way into Itzalâs confidence. I didnât let him explain much beyond that.â His gaze darkened.
Images flashed behind Kitaraâs eyes of the gruesome state of Landonâs corpse. âWas his torture really necessary?â
Baylenâs stoic expression didnât falter. âIt was.â
âStars, Baylen,â Robert murmured.
âWhat did you do?â Devika asked, addressing the Councilor. âTo be Felled, I mean, and to come back?â
The others stared at her with a mixture of shock and horror at the question.
Robert, however, seemed unfazed. âI sent word to the High Council about a flaw in one of their security systems. When they brushed it off, I exploited that flaw so theyâd recognize what kind of breach they might face if someone lessâ¦altruistic used it.â He shrugged. âThey didnât see it the same way.â
âYou hacked their servers?â Alasdair asked.
Robert shook his head. âNo. I hijacked their servers. Completely locked them down to prove a point.â
âStars, have you met my dad?â Storm muttered.
Robert turned to him. âNot at the time, no,â he replied. âThey thought I was attempting some kind of takeover or extortion or something. The Guardians who arrested me didnât give me an opportunity to explain.â
âBut why Fell you?â Devika asked, aghast. âCouldnât you justâ¦explain later?â
âI was formerly a technopath,â the Fallen said. âWhich allowed me to exploit their system. It took them a few years to realize only a technopath could help solve the flaw, but by then, it was too late for me.â
âIs that how you knew about me?â Kitara asked. âEnough toâ¦tell Baylen? You couldnât have known before then, not before becoming a Councilor, otherwise.â
Robert studied her for a moment, then glanced around at the others. His eyes widened in understanding. âBlessed stars, they all know, donât they?â
