On her last day in Valëtyriaâs long-term care facility, Kitara woke with a plan beginning to form in her mind. Storm still slept, so she slipped into the adjoining room to use the facilities and make a few phone calls.
âHello, Kitara.â
âBaylen.â
She hesitated, unsure how to begin.
âEverything alright?â he asked when she didnât immediately speak.
âYeah. I justâ¦â She chewed her lip as she stared at her fatherâs green eyes in the bathroom mirror. âHow long did it take you to startâ¦building bodies?â
The question must have surprised him because Baylen didnât answer right away. âYears,â he finally said. âAnd even now, Iâm only able to tend to about three angels a day. Why?â
âI wantâ¦to try to unFell Robert.â
She could feel his disapproval through the phone. âKitaraâ¦â
âHow am I supposed to know if I can do it again if I donât try?â
âYou just recovered from a traumatic experience, including unFelling Storm. Itâs your last day in the healing facilityâhave you become so attached you donât wish to be released?â
âDrama queen,â Kitara muttered.
âItâs a valid question.â
âWell, how did you get started then?â she countered defensively.
A pause. âYou probably donât want to know the answer to that.â
She sighed, annoyed. âYouâre going to have to learn how to be a lot more forthcoming if you want me to give your offer any real thought.â
âImplying youâve given it some thought.â
She bit her lip. âI donât want anyone thinking my loyalty is divided.â
âDo you think your loyalty is divided?â
âIâm not trying to help Ostragarn against Valëtyria.â
âThatâs not what I asked.â
Kitara almost laughed. âDo you know how many times youâve not answered a question I asked?â
âCadavers.â
That caught her off guard. âWhat?â
âYou asked how I got started building bodies. I used cadavers. Seemedâ¦safer and a bit more humane.â
âI canât exactly use a cadaver for this, Baylen.â
He sighed heavily. âNo, I suppose not.â
âI think I may needâ¦support,â she finally admitted. âAnd no one elseâ¦no one else gets it, you know?â
âI do.â
She gripped the phone a little tighter. âCan you do it as a favor?â
âYou already owe me oneâI said no blood sacrifices, but that doesnât mean Iâve forgotten.â
Kitara rolled her eyes. âWell, now Iâll owe you two.â
Baylen contemplated this for a moment. âYou and Storm. If you both accept my offer, Iâll consider the favors repaid.â
âAnd if we donât? If he doesnât?â
âWell, I suppose Iâll just have to try and call them in a different time.â
Kitaraâs lips twisted in a wry smile, exasperated and amused. âWeâve only had a few days to think about it.â
âThereâs no rush. I understand your caution.â
âYouâve said that once to me before.â
âAnd it was as true then as it is now.â
Kitara bit back an exasperated sigh. âI need to call Rob. Will you help me or not?â
He snorted. âFine. When?â
âToday.â
âAre you sure youâre up for it?â
âI think so. But Iâm really not going to know until I try.â
âFair enough.â
After hanging up with her cousin, Kitara made a few more calls, then slipped out of the bathroom to find the Healers.
âYouâre never up before me.â
Stormâs voice startled a squeak out of her, and Kitara spun to find him watching her from the bed. âSorry, I thought you were still asleep.â
He raised an eyebrow. âWhat are you doing?â
âTaking care of some things,â she hazarded, edging toward the door. âI need to go talk to the Healers for a minute.â
âEverything okay?â
She took a deep breath. âI want to try and unFell Robert. If he wants me to.â
Storm gaped at her. âYouâre still recovering from unFelling meââ
âIâm recovered,â she interrupted. âAnd going a bit stir-crazy, to tell you the truth. When I unFelled you, Iâd just blown up a whole fortress after days of very little sleep and barely any food. Iâm rested, well-fed, and back to full strength. What better time to try it than now? In the long-term care facility, surrounded by Healers? Aâ¦safety net of sorts,â she added, thinking of Baylenâs words when she cleared the sedative from Kenricâs veins. Her voice softened. âItzalâs attacks left Fallen behind, Storm. Fallen who didnât deserve it any more than Robert does.â
He propped himself up on one elbow. âIâm not questioning your motivations, or even your capabilities, Kit. I justâ¦are you sure youâre up for it?â
âWhy does everyone keep asking me that?â she muttered. âYes.â
His silver eyes tightened a little. âHave you thought about how it will affect him ifâ¦â
âIf I fail?â
âIâm not saying you will, butââ
âI have,â she interrupted him. âAndâ¦I plan to explain it in as cautionary terms as possible. But I have to try, Storm.â
âStars, Kit,â he muttered under his breath. âWhy?â
âWhat happened to youâ¦it happened to others, Storm. My own mother.â She crossed the room again to perch on the edge of the bed at his side. âI need an opportunity to test this power of mine. If unFelling you was a flukeâ¦Iâd rather know now, wouldnât you?â
Stormâs expression softened, and he reached out to take Kitaraâs hand. âYou donât have to prove anything to anyone, Kit. We know who you are.â
She shook her head. âIâm not trying to prove anything to anyone.â
âSee, that may be the first lie youâve ever told me, because youâre definitely trying to prove it to yourself.â
She half-smiled. âI donât count.â
He lifted her hand to his lips. âOf course you do. Love, Iâm not going to stop you. I just want to make sure you know what youâre doing.â
âStars no, I have no idea,â she answered honestly. âBut I feel ready.â
He nodded. âIf youâll give me a minute, Iâll get dressed and go with you.â
The Healers protested, which Kitara expected. After a well-timed phone call from her soul bondâs mother and a little wheedling from said soul bond himself, the Healers relented and began preparing a room for her to work in.
Baylen appeared in Kitaraâs recovery room a short time later, watching her pace with a mild expression.
âYouâre making me nervous,â Storm finally said from the couch.
âCanât help it,â she replied, pivoting again. âIâm nervous.â
âThereâs no need to be,â Baylen said. âYouâve done it once already, and that in subpar circumstances. At full strength, I suspect youâll have no trouble.â
âEasy for you to say,â she muttered. âStars, they should have been here by now.â
âHeâs the High Engineer, Kit,â Storm reminded her. âHe canât justâ¦up and leave on a whim. Heâs probably making sure Alasdair can cover for himââ
Voices echoing in the hall made the three of them look up.
Kitaraâs brow furrowed. âI called Kenric and Robert, Ilythia too, in case I needed her to persuade the Healers. But it sounds likeââ
A host of people appeared in the doorway. Declan, Zayne, and Alasdair. Kenric and Robert. Devika and Phoebe. Andâ¦
âHigh Councilor,â Kitara greeted him as he entered with his wife, her gaze flicking to Baylen and back again.
âKitara.â
She surveyed them all. âWhat are you doing here?â
âWhen Robert mentioned what you wanted to do, I didnât want to miss the chance to see it,â Alasdair admitted.
âThen he told us, and obviously we had to come too,â Declan put in. âCuz weâre all besties now, right, B?â
The Ninthëvel rolled his eyes and didnât reply.
âI wanted to be here in case you ended up unconscious again,â Devika added. âNot that I think you will, butââ
âYouâre attempting somethingâ¦miraculous,â Cornelius said. âMy wife and Iâ¦we agreed we should be here for it.â
Ilythia grinned at Kitara, who sighed.
âI caught the tail end of their conversation,â Phoebe admitted. âAnd, like Devika, I wanted to be here, just in case. To witness the impossible.â
âAlso, I am definitely taking notes,â Devika added, smiling at her friend.
Finally, Kitara looked at Kenric and Robert.
The latter made a heroic attempt to keep the hope out of his expression. âAre you sure?â he asked quietly. âYouâve only just recovered from beforeâ¦â
âIâm sure. You donât have to be anywhere for the next few days, do you? I donât know how long it will takeââ
âIf he does, Alasdair will cover for him,â Kenric cut in smoothly. âIf you truly think you can do itâ¦â
âIf I do, will you all stop treating me like Iâm a doll on the verge of breaking?â Kitara snapped.
Kenric grinned. âWhatever you want.â
Robertâs expression gave nothing away. âIf you do thisâ¦â He sighed and ran a hand through his silver hair in a gesture of unease. âIt will change everything, Kitara.â
âIt already has,â she muttered.
The others exchanged glances.
âKit,â Storm began hesitantly. âEverything you areâand I donât mean your ancestryâwhether you can fix Robert, whether or not you could have fixed me, the othersâ¦none of that affects how we see you.â
âOr how we love you,â Devika added.
Storm continued, his voice filled with a quiet intensity. âYouâve proven yourself a thousand times, in a hundred different ways. You are more than your fatherâs abilities, more than a Ninthëvel. Justâ¦more.â
âI think my father would have wanted this,â Kitara replied, holding Stormâs gaze. âIf he really thought I was the solution to his formula, the answer to all the sorrow it causedâ¦I want to live up to that. I want to make my parents proud. Make Saoirse proud.â
âThey would be,â Phoebe said, her eyes suspiciously bright. âMija, they would be so proud of you.â
âWe all are,â Devika added, extending a hand to her sister, who took it gratefully and pulled her into a hug.
Kitara looked around the room. Each immortal wore a different expression, but they all held the same sentimentâbelief.
âYouâre gonna make me cry, and I havenât even done anything yet,â Kitara managed in a strangled tone.
âYou do realize,â Declan began, grinning impishly, âif you cry, I will have to make a joke, probably at Stormâs expense, right?â
âThat would probably only make her cry more,â Devika said, deadpan. âYour jokes are awful.â
âAnd yet,â Declan countered, âyou always laugh.â
Devika raised an eyebrow. âOut of pity, mostly.â
The room filled with laughter despite that assertion.
âAll right,â Kitara finally cut in. âThe Healers will show you all to the room. Iâll be there in a minute.â Her emerald eyes cut to Stormâs father. âHigh Councilor, a word?â
That spurred the rest of them to make their way into the hall.
When Storm made as if to leave too, Kitara tugged on his hand. âYou stay. We should have this conversation together.â
Baylen paused just inside the door, raising an eyebrow at her in an unspoken question.
Kitara shook her head, and he slipped out with the others.
