This chapter is dedicated to Lillian_Jones Thank you so much for creating 'the thanks for reading Haven High' banner. It turned out great. Cheers.
When they stepped through le Fay's port door empty handed she did not look pleased. Who could blame her, he wasn't happy about it either. When Tuma met them with an expression as serious as a heart attack Kyle knew he wasn't going to like what he was going to say.
"You need to come quick. We're about to move him to the medmage clinic."
Kyle started running with his heart in his throat.
He knew it. They were too late.
As he and his friends raced to Tuma's office from the gym, he just kept saying in his head please don't let me be too late.
He completely forgot that there were others privy to his thoughts until Lauren spoke up in his head: Guys I think I know what she might mean by go to the mountain.
I think she means we have to take him to the mountain. Maybe as a mountain troll he can heal himself if he's near the stone? Lauren suggested.
Zach spoke up: I don't think so Lauren she said take him to the mountain not a mountain.
WTF guys what mountain is she talking about then? There are hundreds of thousands of mountains in the world? Quinn moaned.
They were still racing down the hallways and Kyle couldn't think of anything else, but getting to his brother.
They were all each other had in the world, since his mom had ditched him in a diner and Trav's had dumped on the . . .
. . . Holy SHIT guys I think I know what mountain they're talking about. He yelled excitedly in his head . . . It must be the mountain he was found on in the Rockies.
Kyle came to an abrupt stop outside the office door and he hesitated for a second. AS long as he didn't open the door his brother still existed, but if he opened it and his brother was gone his life would never be the same.
He'd still have Bruno and Bo, but they were satellites in his world. Travis was the sun and the moon. He knew it sounded lame, but he loved the guy more than he loved himself; he'd rescued him years ago from himself. He'd probably be dead today if it weren't for him. He would have pissed the wrong person off with his hateful attitude and he'd be done for.
Lauren guessing at his trepidation, wrapped her arm around his shoulders and pushed him through the door she had opened and directed him into the room.
Travis was on the couch wrapped like a mummy with only his eyes visible, and seeing that Kyle dove for him. Madly, he began to grope all around his body looking for a spot that hadn't already been turned to stone, while tears streamed down his face.
When Kyle looked up and saw his brother's tears and the fear in his eyes he lost it. He was done.
He bellowed, "Find out which fucking mountain he was found on and get a portal open we've got to move him NOW!"
Xander held his phone up for all to see. An old news article was displayed on the screen. The headline read "Boy found on Mountain.
When he yelled, "I got it!" The gang crowded in the room and everyone took a corner of the blanket that rested under the immobile Travis.
Tuma stood up at first looking like he was going to object; then seeming to change his mind, he used that eerie amplified booming voice of his to roar, "le Fay get a port door open to that mountain. NOW!"
They raced through the halls to get to the gym and Kyle's legs were screaming at him. Travis weighed a literal ton and he and his friends were all exhausted, but they moved faster than humanly possible.
Every once and a while Travis would look at him with his panicked eyes and Kyle would reach down deeper into his reserves of energy and yell and scream at the gang to spur them on.
When they made it to the gym they didn't even stop; they just went right on through the port door into the inky night of the Rocky Mountains.
The entire gang went crashing through the port door literally, and again Marley was the only one left standing. The hard stone cushioned nobodies fall as they collapsed with exhaustion.
But Kyle shut up from his prostrated state to lean over Trav and say, "Were here Trav do what you need to do."
He was frantic and desperate to have something happen. Trav's eyes were closing and opening repeatedly like he just couldn't stay awake.
Kyle tried to shake him and then unwrap him as he choked out, "Please don't leave me." He looked to the sky, and the hard stone of the mountain itself and begged, "Please do something.
Please don't let him die."
His friends were huddled together at Trav's feet weeping. All of them were crying quietly.
Nothing was happening and Travis was almost gone. Kyle could see his eyelids turning to stone as the shut for the last time.
Kyle threw himself at the side of the mountain and beat his hands on the hard cold stone screaming, "Do something! Save him!"
He jumped back from the cliff face when he heard the grinding of stone on stone and watched through a blur of tears as a perfect square stone door way slide open, and giant of a woman walked out.
She took one look at a bundled Travis and rushed to him speaking a language no one could understand. She fell to her knees beside him and picked him up with ease to cradle his head in her lap.
She turned her tear streaked face on Kyle and asked in very broken English, "What you do my baby?"
Kyle was stunned the woman was actually Travis' mom and she was not behaving like she had abandoned him years ago, but now was not the time to debate that.
"He was poisoned and now he doesn't have the power to not turn into to stone, but a powerful being sent us here for help. Can you save him?"
"He no magic. Turn stone."
Kyle nodded emphatically.
"Knife not here."
There's a knife somewhere that can heal him but it's not here, is that what you're saying?"
"Yes old turn stone we stab." She pointed to her heart.
Kyle watched as Travis' eyes finally closed. When his breath rattled in his chest Kyle dove for Trav's mother and yelled, "Do something!"
"Need knife."
Kyle grabbed her hands excitedly and cupped them in his to demand, "Say that again."
She looked confused, but did as commanded, "NEED KNIFE! She bellowed.
He yelled, "alakazaam!
With every fiber of his being he willed his power of gift bestowal on the mountain troll, and when he opened their cupped hands an obsidian Knife as black as the moonless sky around them sat in her palms. Her eyes went wide with wonder, but then they took on a true sense of purpose before she plunged the knife into Travis' stone chest.
A red light glowed from the crack that she had made and as the stone turned lava hot it melted into the shape of Travis. As it cooled it turned black; then as it cooled even further, it started to take on the skin like appearance of a human.
He was restored.
When the process was complete a very naked Travis lay before them.
Kyle used the blanket to cover him up and waited with bated breath for his eyes to open, and when they did he fell on him with relief.
He was blubbering and crying like a baby, until his brother reached up and said, "Wow dude, I'm not going to need a shower after this."
Kyle snorted and punched him in his arm, his very human arm and hugged the shit out of the guy, but when he heard the mountain troll clear her throat, he whispered to his brother:
"Bro I got someone here you might want to meet."
And when he sat back Travis' eyes went wide and he uttered a strange word that Kyle would bet a million bucks meant:
Mother
Trav's mother doesn't seem like she abandoned him.
I wonder what happened to separate them and if he'll go back to his tribe?
If you're wondering the same thing; then . . .
Tune in tomorrow to find out.
