Chapter 14

Meg picked him up at her usual time. She pulled into his driveway with her sleek little bug as he noted the top was down. It was unseasonably warm and sunny today, but the crisp clear February day bellied his feelings. There was a storm brewing inside him that no sunny day could dissipate.

He greeted Meg with a forced smile and said, "Hey Babe," and kissed her soundly on the mouth.

When she pulled away her eyes searched his face for a moment before she asked, "Is everything okay?"

"Are you kidding? I fell asleep yesterday evening and never woke up again until this morning. I've just had the best sleep I've had in years." He forced a cheery tone.

"You didn't go for your nightly swim?" her eyes narrowed in suspicion. And a frown formed between her beautiful brows.

He smoothed it out with his finger and ran his hand over the silky smooth contours of her face. He wanted to tell her, but he didn't know how, SO he didn't.

"Hey we'd better get going we're going to be late." He hoped a change in subject would work, but he should have known better.

"Cam we're committed to each other, and that means sharing everything with each other. Is there something you're not telling me, final chance to come clean? "She said in a sing song voice half jokingly, but only half.

"Babe I'm fine. Sheesh suspicious much?" He wanted to wince and cock his shoulders at his tone. It sounded false and defensive even to his ears.

Meg sighed audibly, "I trust you Cam, so I'm going to let you tell me when you're ready, but don't mistake my kindness for weakness." She turned then, eyes facing front, and slowly backed out of the driveway.

Cam couldn't help, but gulp, she'd left her statement at that. No veiled threats or ultimatums just a statement of fact: if he took her for granted then he could just fill in the blanks. A tight shiver ran up his spine.

His girlfriend could be scary AF, without even trying, and wasn't that so damn . . . hot.

Cameron stood in a long line of students waiting to load up their trays with the Friday lunch special. It was his favorite cafeteria day. He had a choice of pizza or wings and he was ravenous, so he thought he might just load up on both. He'd need the extra energy to pull an all nighter tonight.

He wished he hadn't thought of that though, because whenever he thought of his predicament his stomach did a queasy little flip flop. He had to think of something else before he lost his appetite.

Yeah think of the freshly brewed cup of coffee you're craving that should help.

And it did, he finally got close enough to pick up the thick blue plastic monstrosity of a tray. Its surface was scratched and dented there were even a few initials carved in it. He was wondering how old it was when he heard the couple in front of him start up a conversation.

"Hey did you hear?" the male Nix asked his companion as he leaned in conspiratorially.

Cam chuckled to himself thinking wow these guys were really out of the loop if they were just finding out about the changelings now.

"No, what? The female Kobold asked eagerly.

"I hear there's a creature in San Francisco that's turning halfbloods into fullbloods." He said surreptitiously.

Cam nearly dropped his tray he'd been balancing on his forearm for entertainment.

"What did you say? He leaned in suddenly not caring that he had startled them both.

The guy looked taken aback by the vehemence in Cameron's words, but clarified anyway. "Yeah I heard there's this creature in Chinatown that's turning halfboods into fullbloods. A lot of the seniors are going to him and they say they feel great and that it's working for them."

Cam just stood there sputtering trying to take in what he was saying. Could it be this simple? Could the solution he'd been looking for all along have been right as his doorstep? Considering the magical world was a crazy ironic place . . . of course it could.

Cam advanced on the poor guy, and grabbing his shirt front, hurriedly asked, "Do you have his address?"

The Nix's eyes got so big in his head that they looked like they were going to pop out and roll under the craft table. Cam quickly let go of him. "Sorry," he said embarrassed by his reaction

"Wooh . . . Chill man," the guy started smoothing down his shirt front.

"No I don't have his address; what do I look like Goggle Maps?" The Nix went straight from frightened to indignant.

"Look I'm sorry," Cam took on a pleading tone, "do you know how to find him, online I mean?"

Yeah there's a subreddit for 'cryptids'. Look under the topic Mongolian Death Worm.

"And you can thank me for the info by letting me know how it goes." The guy turned to the Kobold then and said," If things go well I just might pay him a visit, you should too Bae then neither one of us will have to be conscripted, ever." He kissed her then confirming Cam's theory that they were a couple.

Their conversation was cut short though, "Hey are you kids ready to order or not; there's a lineup here?" the lunch lady growled while pointing her serving spoon at them accusatorily.

The couple quickly turned around to order which left him alone with his thoughts, or thought, there was only one running through his head: who was he going to get to retrieve the info. He surely couldn't. He'd be too excited and nervous he'd fry the motherboard for sure.

Just then a wondrous thing happen Delphi the school oracle and resident tech expert walked by with a group of fourth years. She ran the computer lab with an iron fist -- no wielders allowed.

He wanted to crow with elation. He couldn't belief how everything was suddenly falling into place.

"Hey Delphi," he called out, loud enough for everyone to hear him, "Gotta sec?"

He made it to the gang's table with a smile plastered to his face that an earthquake couldn't wipe off, and when he sat down next to Meg he hugged her to his side fiercely. He knew his eyes must be shining with anticipation of finally having the guaranteed solution to his problems.

Meg just laughed and said, "Someone's in a good mood."

He beamed at her and said, "Someone also has the sexiest girlfriend in the whole wide world."

Cameron whispered suggestively in her ear, "What are the chances that we can cut classes this afternoon so I can show you how much I appreciate you?"

"Well not to complain or anything Camster but me thinks you're acting a bit manic. Your mood swings these days are giving me whiplash." Meg chuckled sardonically.

"I've got a strong feeling that's all going to change very soon." He nipped her on the neck when he said it.

"Hey you," Lauren interrupted, plopping her tray down next to him in frustration, "I said you could keep Cam 2.0 at my place, not make him my problem. He's beginning to smell pretty ripe and I'm for damn sure not bathing him."

When both Zach and Quinn looked up from the food they were currently devouring with shocked looks on their faces, everyone cracked up, including Lauren.

Cam couldn't stop laughing. He didn't want to; it felt too good to be feeling any other emotion other than fear. And happy was one of the ones he hadn't felt in a long time.

He finally managed to stop laughing long enough though to say, "Sorry, I'll come by tonight and throw him in the shower. Okay?"

"I'll help," Meg added, before she realized how that sounded and being her typical self instead of blushing like anyone else would, she wiggled her eyebrows for effect and said, "Doesn't that sound like fun?"

Everyone lost it again when Cam turned three shades of red.

But Zach burst their happy bubble when he announced. "Guys I think we've forgetting something. We need to get serious and figure out what's in the school. "

"How are we supposed to that? Ryan asked. "Not only do we not know if it's even here; we don't know what is even here."

Lauren spoke up then, which grabbed everyone's attention, "I have an idea how we can figure it out."

They all knew how brilliant Lauren was, but Zach was staring at her like she had actually invented ideas, with a big goofy grin on his face, while Quinn was giving him the stink eye, and she was beaming at them both.

Cam chuckled to himself as he concluded that situations like this were the exact reason Zuckerburg included an 'It's complicated' button on facebook.

"Lauren continued, "I think we need to officially consult Delphi."

He looked around the table at the slack jawed looks on everyone's faces; it was if they were all saying: why hadn't I thought of that?

"That's a great idea, Cam agreed," I'm going to be talking to her later today would you like me to ask her when we can swing by the computer lab?"

"Yeah that'd be great," Zach jumped in, "I know she probably won't have time for us today, but let's tell her it's urgent, so we can get an appointment first thing next week."

"We need to know what kind of danger this item poses for us ASAP, aside from the obvious target it will paint on our back's if Liam finds out it's here, that is."

"Agreed? Cameron said while looking around the table for confirmation. Everyone nodded their consent, but not Kelly and Xan; they were too busy.

"Xander, Zach cleared his throat addressing him specifically, "seeing that you're the only one of us that can still go anywhere near technology. Will you do the honors?"

"Sure no problem Zach just let me know when." Xan said before going back to swapping spit with Kelly.

Cam shuddered. Don't get him wrong there was nothing cringe worthy about the scene or either one of them for that matter. Kelly exuded her sexuality through every pore and was as gorgeous as she was deadly and Xan was hotness personified, but he just didn't buy them as a couple.

Looking at them together was like looking at a movie set. It was all front no substance.

Meg dragged his attention back to her when she nipped his neck and said, "Let's show them how it's really supposed to be done."

And when she kissed him he forgot about everything, but her.

His Meg.

His beautiful Meg.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Later that evening Cam and Meg dropped by with a change of clean clothes for Cameron 2.0 and he got right to work getting him showered, but to say it was weird AF would have been an understatement.

When Meg had offered to help he had flatly refused to even think about it, the thought of her rubbing down some other guy's body made him want to gag. Okay it was technically his body but tell that to the raging jealous jerk that lived inside of him.

So he managed it himself after having to strip down to his skivvies to do it. Otherwise he would have been soaking wet.

When they were done he promised to come back in a couple of days to do it all over again.

Reluctantly he agreed that he'd have to tell his Dad, but just not right now. He'd told her. What he hadn't told her was he had something to do before the grounding of the century took effect.

When they left Lauren's Outer Richmond neighborhood to head back to Sea Cliff they both stopped at Starbucks. They got there just before it closed and he ordered a salted caramel mocha frappuccino for Meg and Grande Espresso Macchiato for him.

They sat outside for awhile while he played with her hair that was currently blowing in the wind. They tables were deserted so they had a modicum of privacy.

"So what's on the agenda for tomorrow?" Meg asked nonchalantly.

He hated to lie to her, but he didn't want to tell her yet, because telling her that he was going to see someone about making him a fullblood would lead to him having to admit he was rejecting his skin and nope he was not ready at all for that conversation, so he said instead:

"My Dad just got back this morning and were going to the boat supply store to see about rebuilding Megan's Song. "Immediately he felt like a heel for choosing that lie.

She looked crestfallen, "I'm sorry that happened to your boat. I feel just awful about what happened, I mean your dad and you actually built it by hand."

"I wish I could do something to make it right," she finished with a sigh.

"You can, you can help me rebuilt it. I happen to know you're really good with your hands," he joked before kissing her.

He started nibbling on her ear lobe as she whispered intimately in his ear, "let's get out of here so I can show you how good," and Cam couldn't move fast enough.

That night he fell asleep after his swim with a smile on his face. Tomorrow he would travel to the location Delphi had looked up for him and he would become a fullblood selkie.

He couldn't believe how lucky he was:

Megan and he were going to get their happy-ever-after after all.
