148 As he spoke, he handed a piece of paper to Mikayla.
Of course, she wouldnât sign anything recklessly. As she accepted the paper to make them lower their guards, she reached into her pocket to take out her phone to call the police.
Just as she touched her phone, someone grabbed her from behind and dragged her back hard.
âAh!â Mikayla screamed in fright. She swung her fists and kicked her legs desperately in resistance.
âLook clearly! Itâs me!â
When she heard Jeromeâs familiar voice, she stopped struggling. She raised her head and saw Jeromeâs face. However, the street lights were dim, so she couldnât see his expression clearly.
âWhy are you here? Where are they?â
Mikayla turned around with fear, but there was no one else there.
âThey ran away,â Jerome said solemnly. âWhy did you come to such a quiet place for at walk?â
She had been extremely nervous earlier, but now that she was relaxed, her legs felt a little weak. She sat down on the rock next to her.
âI was just strolling around casually. Who knew that I would run into them? Letâs call the police Mikayla took out her phone, but Jerome said sternly, âNo. The police wonât be able to get any evidence even if they come. Iâll send someone to deal with this and investigate clearly.â
âI have evidence!â
She wanted to show him the piece of paper, but she found that her hand was empty.
Jerome saw through her thoughts and explained kindly, âThey seemed experienced. They grabbed the paper and ran away as soon as they sensed that something was wrong. They wouldnât leave you with any evidence.â
Mikayla had been completely focused on how to take out her phone to call the police. So, she didnât realize that they had snatched the away and she didnât notice Jerome approaching urged, âLetâs go back first.
shook her head. âGive me a minute. My legs still feel weak. I need to rest for a while.
He glanced at her with a strange expression and then squatted down in front of her. She couldnât believe her eyes.
âGet on!â Jerome said impatiently.
Mikayla lay on his back in a daze while Jerome held her legs and walked forward with her on his back.
It reminded her of the times she was carried by Eduard when she was a child. His broad shoulders and warm back had given her an infinite sense of security back then.
As she leaned against Jeromeâs back, she noticed that his back was broad and warm too. She could even smell his faint fragrance of cedar.
His steps were steady. Even though Mikayla wasnât heavy, he gradually became tired after carrying her for such a long distance. But he didnât put her down or ask her to get off and just kept carrying her.
In her previous life, it would have been nice if Jerome had been this patient with her. He didnât even need to show so much patience.
If he could have been less unpleasant and less cold toward her and treated her like others, she wouldnât have been so paranoid and listened to all the provocations to do so many crazy things.
Then, she wouldnât have been framed, and she wouldnât have ended up in a mental hospital, suffering from stomach cancer.
âAre you crying?
Jeromeâs slightly joking voice interrupted Mikaylaâs thoughts. âYou were daring enough to bite me and hit me before. Why are you so frightened by them?â
Mikayla didnât even know when she had started crying.
She wiped her tears and said, âIâm fine now. Put me dow Hearing her cold voice, Jerome turned to look at her. âAre you throwing me away now?
