Kenteâs POV
Kente hid behind a coal pile, his heart thumping loud in his chest. The forge district glowed red from the big ovens, and the prison gates stood tall ahead, guarded by men in dark cloaks with sharp spears. His pendant felt hotâlike Zuri was calling him. His tunic, tan with orange and blue streaks, was covered in ash, but he didnât care. He had to save Zuri.
Tamara peeked out, clutching his stick. âKente, those guards look tough,â he said, his voice shaky. His shell glowed dim, flickering like it was nervous too.
âWeâll get past them,â Kente said, trying to sound strong. âZuriâs counting on us. Miss Woloâs hereâlook!â A big wave of heat rolled over the ground, making the guards stumble. Miss Woloâs fire magic lit up the night.
Chioma jumped up, her gold eyes shining. âNowâs our chance!â she said. âKente, lead usâyour pendant knows where Zuri is!â
Kente ran toward the gates, dodging a spear that whooshed past. The pendant pulled him to a small door on the side. âHere!â he yelled, waving at Chioma and Tamara. He felt braveâlike something big was waking up inside him.
Chiomaâs POV
Chioma followed Kente, her boots kicking ash everywhere. She was proudâhe wasnât just scared anymore. The forge heat made her sweaty, but Miss Woloâs fire made it worse, knocking guards off balance. âTamara, keep up!â she called. Tamara swung his stick at a guard, making him back off.
âKenteâs doing great,â she whispered to Tamara, smiling. They reached the small door, and Kente banged on it. âZuriâs inside!â he shouted. Chioma shoved it open, showing a dark hallway with cold stone walls. âNice work, Kente,â she said.

Prophet Mirrorâs POV
Prophet Mirror watched from a forge roof, his cloak flapping. His hawk flew low, showing him Miss Woloâs fire clashing with Kaelonâs cold magic. The spires glowed bright, like they felt the fight. Kente, Chioma, and Tamara slipped into the prison. âTheyâre strong,â Prophet said quietly.
His hawk flew to Zuriâs cell. He felt a new powerâwarm and orangeâpushing out the Harvesterâs darkness. âZuriâs changing,â he said, surprised. Then he saw Kaelon outside, holding a black stone that glowed icy blue. âHeâs up to something bad,â Prophet whispered, jumping down to warn Miss Wolo.
Miss Woloâs POV
Miss Wolo stood in the forge yard, her staff sparking with red-hot magic. Her lava eyes glowed bright, and she glared at Kaelon. âLet Zuri go!â she shouted, slamming her staff down. Fire roared out, rushing at him.
Kaelon dodged, his cloak swirling. He held a black stone shining cold blue. âYouâre too late,â he said, his voice mean. âThis stone will wake the Harvestersâ leader. Old Brass is finished!â
Miss Woloâs stomach dropped. She knew that stoneâher mom, the Priestess, said it was dangerous, hidden long ago. âNot if I stop you!â she yelled, swinging her staff. Fire flew, but Kaelon laughed, stepping back.
Prophet landed beside her. âKaelonâs calling something big,â he said fast. âAnd Zuriâs got new power!â Miss Wolo nodded. âWeâll handle it,â she said, her magic blazing.
Zuriâs POV
Zuri pulled at his chains, his red eyes glowing in the dark cell. His pendant shone bright, warm against his chest. He heard fighting outsideâfire crashing, Kaelon yelling. âKenteâs here,â he said, smiling through tears. Something hot buzzed inside him, pushing the Harvesterâs voice away.
His hands glowed orange, like little fires. âWhatâs this?â he said, shocked. He yanked the chains, and they cracked loud. The door burst openâKente ran in, followed by Chioma and Tamara. âZuri!â Kente yelled, hugging him tight.
âYouâre safe!â Tamara said, his shell glowing happy. But then the orange glow spread up Zuriâs arms, and they all stepped back, eyes wide. âWhatâs happening?â Chioma asked.
Before Zuri could answer, a tall woman in a long robe stepped inâMiss Wolo, with another lady behind her, old and serious-looking. âThatâs the Priestess,â Miss Wolo said. âZuri, your powerâs new. Itâs dangerous. Youâre coming with usâfor now.â
Zuriâs heart sank. âIâm not bad!â he said. The Priestess stared, her eyes hard. âWeâll see,â she said. âYouâll stay with me until we decide what to do.â
