Kenteâs POV
Kente sat on a wooden bench outside the Priestessâs big stone house, kicking at the dirt with his boots. The capitalâs spires glowed blue-green in the night sky, but he didnât care about their shine. His tunicâtan with orange and blueâwas still messy from the forge, and his pendant felt cold now, like Zuri was far away even though he was just inside. Kenteâs stomach twisted. Heâd saved Zuri, but now what?
Tamara plopped down next to him, his stick tapping the ground. âKente, you look sad,â he said, his voice soft. His shell glowed a little, flickering like it felt bad too. âZuriâs safe with the Priestess, right?â
âYeah, but for how long?â Kente said, frowning. âThat orange glow he hadâit scared everyone. The Priestess said theyâd decide what to do with him later. What if they think heâs dangerous?â
Chioma leaned against the wall nearby, her gold eyes watching the street. âThey wonât hurt him yet,â she said, sounding sure, like a big sister. âMiss Woloâs with him. Sheâll make sure heâs okay until the hearing.â
Kente nodded, but his chest still hurt. âI just got him back,â he said quietly. âI donât want to lose him again.â
Zuriâs POV
Zuri sat on a straw mat in a small room inside the Priestessâs house. The walls were black stone, carved with glowing blue linesâmagic stuff he didnât understand. His chains were gone, but his wrists still ached, and his torn tunic smelled like ash. The pendant Kente loved hung around his neck, warm again, like a hug from his friend.
The door creaked open, and Miss Wolo walked in, her staff tapping the floor. Her lava eyes glowed soft, not scary like before. âZuri,â she said, sitting across from him. âThat orange power you showedâitâs strong. Whereâd it come from?â
âI donât know,â Zuri said, looking at his hands. They werenât glowing now, but he felt something warm inside, buzzing like a little fire. âIt just happened. The Harvesters tried to take me over, but I fought back. Then this came up.â

Miss Wolo frowned, thinking. âItâs jujuâwild juju,â she said. âMaybe from Old Brass, maybe from you. The Priestess is worried itâs tied to the Harvesters. Sheâs keeping you here until the elders meet in a few days.â
Zuriâs heart sank. âA meeting?â he asked. âTo decide what?â
âYour fate,â she said, her voice serious but kind. âIâll be there. Kente too. Weâll fight for you.â
Zuri swallowed hard. He didnât want to be locked up againâor worse.
Chiomaâs POV
Chioma stood outside, watching Kente and Tamara talk. The night air was cool, but she felt warmâlike Old Brass was still with her, tough and strong. She didnât like waiting, but Zuri needed time, and so did they. Her gold eyes caught a shadow moving near the spiresâfast and sneaky.
âProphet?â she called softly, hoping it was him. A figure stepped outâProphet Mirror, his cloak dark against the glow. âChioma,â he said, his voice quiet. âKaelonâs still out there. I saw him with that black stone. Itâs bad news.â
Chiomaâs stomach flipped. âWhatâs he doing with it?â she asked.
âTrying to wake something,â Prophet said. âSomething big and oldâHarvester stuff. Heâs gone now, but heâll be back.â
Chioma clenched her fists. âWe need Zuri,â she said. âHe knows the Harvesters. He can help us stop Kaelon.â
Prophet nodded. âTell that to the elders,â he said. âZuriâs power might save usâor scare them more.â
Miss Woloâs POV
Miss Wolo left Zuriâs room and walked to the Priestessâs big hall. The Priestess sat on a high chair, her robe long and gray, her face old but sharp. Her eyes stared at Miss Wolo like they could see everything.
âWolo,â the Priestess said, her voice deep. âThat boyâs powerâitâs not normal. He was with the Harvesters. What if heâs still one of them?â
âHeâs not,â Miss Wolo said, holding her staff tight. âI saw him fight it. That orange glowâitâs his, not theirs. Heâs from Old Brass, like me. I trust him.â
The Priestess didnât smile. âTrust isnât enough,â she said. âThe elders will meet in three days. Theyâll decideâkeep him, lock him up, or worse. Kaelonâs out there tooâheâll want a say.â
Miss Woloâs lava eyes flared. âKaelonâs the real danger,â she said. âHeâs got that black stone. Zuri can help us stop him.â
âMaybe,â the Priestess said. âFor now, he stays here with me. Keep him calm, Wolo. And get readyâweâve got a fight coming.â
Kaelonâs POV
Kaelon stood on a hill outside the capital, the black stone cold in his hand. It glowed blue, whispering old words he likedâpowerful words. The spires shone far off, but he didnât care about them. He cared about the Harvestersâand what they could do with this stone.
âZuri got away,â he said to himself, his voice sharp. âBut thatâs fine. His new power makes him a problem. The elders will see that.â He grinned, mean and sneaky. âIâll be at that meeting. Theyâll give him to meâor Iâll take him.â
He held the stone up, and it pulsed, like something big was waking up under the ground. âOld Brass wonât last,â he said, laughing quietly. âNot when Iâm done.â
